View Full Version : Use of Waterslide transfers.

Just a Query to see if any of us use waterslide transfer paper? I usually get my decals and such from Dom, but, as some of you will know I have been converting a Nieuport to Albert Ball's favourite. When I got to the registration number on the tail I came unstuck as there is no rub down lettering small enough. My son had the idea that if we obtained some waterslide we could use our printer to make our own. After checking out the site and seeing how many different printers were compatible with so many different papers,I took the plunge. It worked very easily in the end, and provided me with a good looking result. Now has anyone any ideas what I can do with the rest of my paper?
For those who have not used it, you can obtain slide transfer paper from Veni Vedi Vici for £4 or in the States at DecalPaper. com for $22 for 25 sheets. You may want to split the cost with a friend, as I don't know if they do individual sheets.

I've bought some frome "the decalpaper store" and used them with good results on
WH40K projects...
I use an inktjet printer and much to my surprise the ink holds well.

My primary concern is being able to usefully fill up a page before printing. Sure, I'd love to be able to print off serial numbers and whatnot for repaints, but how many repaints would I have to have lined up in order to make a practical print run? Or should I just print a whole page for a quarter square inch of paper?

We masked off what we did not want to use, and after cutting out the bit we wanted, kept the rest for later use. It is either this or planning about ayear ahead for all your needs and printing them off at once. I am afraid my brain is not up to this any more.

You can "save" your paper pretty easily if you are only printing out text and stuff. Simply print out whatever numbers you want and print it. Then just cut the paper on a paper cutter so that you have a completely straight edge along the "top" of the paper again. Then you can just repeat the process anytime you want to print again. The printer will assume the new top edge of the paper is the start of it and print like normal. Once the paper starts getting small, you will run into some waste since you printer will start having issues feeding it in.
I have used them quite a bit. They can be very tricky at times and then at other times work like a charm. I created a guide you can see here: http://www.orlandogaming.org/smf/index.php?topic=586.0 If your curious about some of the repaints I have done using decal paper check out the photos here: http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/album.php?albumid=141
Hope that helps

Hi Col.
When the paper gets small you can temporally back it on a sheet of paper, and the printer will read it as you said in your post. Don't use too thick a paper, however, but most printers can handle thin card these days, so it should be O.K.

Rob,
If you are going to buy any more paper, you might want to look at Antenociti's Workshop:

I believe this is the same stuff as Veni Vidi Vici, but Jed's pricing is less 'imaginative'.
I've used this to produce a sheet of 15mm decals for my Flames of War vehicles - all the bits and pieces Dom Skelton hasn't got round to doing yet - such as alternate designs for bridging plates, markings for Belgian and Polish units, etc.
A project I'm currently working on is to see if I can produce a decent 1/144 lozenge which, it must be said, is a royal pain in the a**e! :(

Hi Steve that is an amazing price. I am going to have some of that thanks. Bye the bye which bit of our green and pleasant land are you from, if you don't mind me asking?
Rob.
I am in Florida. The decal guide above resides on the OrlandoGaming.org website that supports the gaming community in Florida.

Hi Guntruck Steve.
That's a bit too far to get together for an evenings flying then. Pity.
Rob.
Sorry for the confusion there. That's why the "price" comment made no sense to me. :)
