When I returned home I discovered a box I had ordered from Skytrex last year with the intent of completing these models before I deployed. That did not happen, but they have provided a nice diversion while I have some time off. These are all fro Skytrex (Red Eagle).

Balloon:

I was not real happy with the quality of the casting on this one. You have to assemple two halves and when joined there was a sizeable joint that had to be filled.

Both balloons required me to supply the rigging (used floral wire), but came with a wench truck and basket.

Drachen:

This one came as a single mold and only had to be cleaned up a little.

Finally is my first attempt at any Metal plane model (Gotha G IV):

First off the instruction sheet on this one sucks especially for a first timer. Fortunately I was able to find good instructions here. Overall it turned out OK. Probably should have started out with something smaller for my first time. OK for a game piece though as I do not have the official WWI bombers yet. I ended up using piano wire for the struts as the ones iincluded were just two weak and kept bending during assembly.

Next up is to make some appropriate acylic bases for them. The Drachen stands OK on a small base, but the other two need something a bit more.

I can fully reccomend the Oberst's bases for balloons Aaron.
It would be a nice finishing touch to such a fine pair of balloons.
A tip on interwing struts is to use paper clip wire. they come in various thicknesses and are softer to file up to length than piano wire, but still much stronger than the struts supplied.
It does allow you to avoid those little humps that show on top of the wings.
I do wish that they would refrain from drilling the top wing all the way through.

Well done! As for the bomber, those metal kits can be tricky, so it is nice you tackling one.

Rob, thanks for the tip on the paper clips. I've used many chunks of very hard piano wire and will definitely give the softer paper clips a try. Lloyd
