I don't think so looking at the pictures.
It looks a far better product than the previous WOW mats.
Looking closely it looks like you can combine any number of mats as all the exit points for roads and rivers seem symmetrical, great for really large games.
I am very tempted to splash out and get a couple

Look good, open fields which can be used for both versions of the game, wonder if a pacific/jungle mat will be in the future.
Will see cost before deciding to get or not, but looking good for the moment.

Well, well, well...they look nice, but where is the no man's land? They seem to be perfect for WGS, not for WGF. If I were them and have three parts of the mat, the middle one should be definitely published in 2, interchangeable versions. One for WGF (with trenchlines) another one for WGS (wothout trenchlines). This way all of us would buy 4 mats, instead of just 3.

Oberst Hajj
10-24-2012, 06:17
Yes, much better then the old mats. I'll try and find out what they are made out of this time.

I'm wondering if there are going to be variations on this type of mat, or if the third one is going to be the larger, campaign special I've heard wind of later in 2013....

Flying Officer Kyte
10-24-2012, 06:20
Yes Andrzej, you have a good point there. We often need three mats without NML for missions deep into enemy territory, so the three mats would get bought anyway, but so many encounters involve an over the lines flavour, that we do really need one mat with the trenches marked out on it.
Rob.

It's nice to see the size of the mat in that last photo. It also looks like they might be in a more advanced stage of production then we initially thought. It looks like there are three boxes of the mat we've seen the photos/art for and the last box appears to be blue in color and it looks like there is some water in the photo of the mat on that last box... like a little coastline!

diceslinger
10-25-2012, 07:35
If you zoom in on the box in the last photo (with the red box) it says "Join two or more Game Mats together (either Countryside, City, or Coast), in the combination you prefer, to create the ultimate scenario for your aerial battles!" I also see that the first picture in this thread says Countryside on the box.

Oberst Hajj
10-25-2012, 07:40
Good catch. Looks like this:

Green box = country
Red box = city
Blue box = coast

That means there will be a total of 4 mats by the end of next year. These three modular ones and the one, larger campaign mat.

Kaiser
10-25-2012, 07:42

I know what you mean Karl, it's not as if I need more mats. I've got about 6-7 different ones already! Oh well, when these come out I'll be adding them to the Aerodrome Accessories site as pre-orders and end up getting one of each for my self as well. lol

Flying Officer Kyte

I can't help it. I missed out on the first ones because I felt they were a bit garish for home use. However, now we are doing shows we need something a bit more in your face to attract the punters. So I guess I'll be buying into this as well. Can't rely on Chris having to bring his mats all the time.

GTS distribution have them availble for pre-order on 15th Nov for a Dec release date, so it looks like a prime candidate for the xmas list to me. :p

The only slight reservation is the size really, we're going to need at least 2 if not 3 and they'll be ~£25 a time + postage to fit a 6'x4' table, should be good though.

Oberst Hajj

That's interesting since they are not showing on the Ares site as a December release (in fact, the Dual packs have slipped to Dec) and when I talked to Ares about getting some advanced production copies to review, they said they were not quite ready for any production samples to be out in the US yet. Both of these lead me to believe that pre-orders for December are a little bit of wishful thinking.

As soon as Ares let's me know a release date, I'll let you guys know and they'll be up on the AA site for pre-order.

I got a look at the new playmats yesterday while visiting my FLGS. The images showed up on his ordering screen while I was ordering some of the upcoming miniatures. They are quite attractive. I particularly liked the mat with the coastline. If memory serves, they will retail for $30.00 each, or something very close to that.

I think that Ares have got a winner here the various combinations of mats look superb.
All of the Nexus mat problems seem to have been addressed; logo not too big, and many combinations allowed by the matching road/river positions on the mat edges and even a coastal mat for the guys with seaplanes.
The only thing I find odd is the curious size of the mats maybe that's a production problem.
How many to buy, probably all of them, if I can get it past madam.:)
Will look great for our National Aerodrome Day if we could get a whole row of adjacent mats on a long table.

Rob.

Postage overseas is a little expensive as the weight and size of these are pretty hefty. For the combo deal, the only option is Priority mail, at about $63, but it's faster then the First Class I normally ship at. For a single mat, it can go First Class for about $22.

There is going to be a WWI only mat coming out later. Not 100% sure if it will have a full on "no man's land" like we normally think of, but it will be designed for a campaign.

Looking at the maps again and they look awesome. Like the three of them with the coast map 1st. As pointed out they seem more of a WWII look. Maybe ARES will come out with a WWI theme map. Looks like a defenite buy when they come out.

If a set of three will cost $63 to ship to the U.K., it might be worth waiting to see what U.K. sellers will be charging.

It could be. But if the other products are any indication, I'm thinking they will be about £35 retail. So, for a set of three you are looking at £105 or $167 vs. $140 ordered through me. VAT and customs might make them equal, but they might also come in under the radar (as most of my shipments seem to do) and not get those charges.

Regardless, I don't think ordering these from the States will save you lots of money like on the smaller miniatures, but most likely it will save you a little and you can have them a month of so sooner :D

Have just measured my dining table and I think I can get all three new mats on together so maybe the size of the mats isn't odd at all but just right;)

I initially thought the size on the old Nexus mats was odd as well. But then I started playing it on my dinning table and they were a perfect fit.

As I use a base board on top of my table I will just have to make a new one to fit the size of the mats. It will still be well worth the trouble.

Too bad this won't work with the old mats, I also both of them.

I don't think so looking at the pictures.
It looks a far better product than the previous WOW mats.
Looking closely it looks like you can combine any number of mats as all the exit points for roads and rivers seem symmetrical, great for really large games.
I am very tempted to splash out and get a couple

I think these mats will add a lot when introducing the game to others - not only more visually appealing, but feels like a more complete game.

For those of you who have played with the previous mats, do you use them for more than aesthetics? Do the terrain serve functional purposes?

Officially, the terrain serves no function beyond looks, but it's just a matter of declaring a building the target for bombing or photographing.

Could you guys tell me why there's always a pic of TWO boxes when they show these mats?
Are both included in a single purchase of a 'Countryside' map?
Does this mean there's two pieces to 'Countryside', two more for 'city', and two more for 'water'?

And is the ~2ft. x 3ft. size for each single mat or total size of the 'Countryside' map?

Haven't seen the 'old style' or even the 'new style' yet but am interested.

Also for Adriatic patrols with my Italian Wing.

And for a Bonus Point, once the art's done they could probably be leveraged straight-across to SoG--two revenue streams off the same development cost. (Though personally, my ideal SoG mats would be reproductions of period nautical charts...)

Thanks, SV--for some reason I thought it had the water stop a bit short of the corner. :o

Bob, I think islands might be better as a separate accessory, printed on transparency-sheet--Scotch-tape 'em down, peel off when done and you can have a custom map every time without them having to do artwork, production and inventory for a zillion map variations. Design, print, sell--it could be a quite quick, easy and inexpensive-to-develop money-mker for Ares.

Maybe "tiles" of all the major Pacific island airbases?

On a simiar frame of mind, we authors proposed something similar (but we imagined it in cardboard) for Sails of Glory. Let's see what it will be released.

Diamondback
02-02-2013, 23:40
Andrea, problem is cardboard tiles don't like to stay put, and don't like to separate nicely from most fixatives... anyone ever try Blu-Tack on a mousepad to know if it comes off clean? If so, that stuff might work and it might be a non-issue after all..

David Manley
02-03-2013, 00:15
Cardboard will be fine for SoG islands as long as (a) they aren't too big and (b) a heavy grade of cardboard is used. Large, thin islands are likely to warp, and would be prone to being knocked in the heat of battle (he says from experience)

I'm afraid we are last in the queue again Chris:(
The UK market is obviously too small for them to rush stock here, much to the detriment of our own stockists as people rush to order from the states which again reduces the amount that our own stores will sell, it's a downward spiral

Yes, it would be nce to think that we could be patient and wait, so that we didn't end up ordering from the US........

(looks at pre-order with Keith for the next WW1 releases, shuffles feet a bit.......)

That said I'm sure there are far more players in the UK than just the cadre here, and only a few order form the US like some of us do, surely??? Bearing in mind the numbers of people we talk to at the shows where we've run games, we often have discussions about the Aerodrome (spreading the word, signing up new members) and pointing existing players off to the trade stands. From experience in my own local gaming groups there are only a few who regularly, if ever, order stuff from overseas, even in this web-enabled globalised world we live in. So, whilst Esdevium and some FLGS (not that I have one, out here in the sticks) might miss out on some profit due to our urgent need to obtain Ares goodies at the earliest opportunity I doubt we are making a serious dent in their business. If we are then that would imply that business was VERY small, and that in itself would be a big worry.

Miniatures sales to the UK have been steady, but not alarmingly so for any LFGS. In fact, most of the sales I do have are for complete sets of a series... so from die hard players, most likely from this site. Sales of one or two minis to the UK have been on the smallish side.

When you guys can order something from the States faster and cheaper (in most cases), it's hard not to justify those purchases.

You did out-do yourself on these new mats. I especially like the way they can be re-arranged.

Can't wait to see the Sails of Glory mats.

Hopefully the Sails of Glory mats will be compatible with the Wings of Glory ones. I suppose there will be a all blue mat and one showing some islands.

Sails of Glory mats! I did not know about them. They should make them so that they are compatible WW2 Wings of Glory.

I was hopeing for an all blue mat without any islands, these can be made up or bought to tast. For me fix islands tends to impose on the type of game played. A plain blue mat would the automatically fit in for WW1 or WW2.

The Sails mat(s) are going to be the same size as the Wings mats. So that is a good sign. They are also doing terrain as a separate item (already in the Starter Set), so I'm sure we will get at least one all blue mat.

Indeed, the Sails of Glory Game Mat will be the same size and material as Wings of Glory's ones. However, to facilitate playing Sails of Glory, we are overprinting on the mat a very light grid of lines that help to assess the direction of the wind with respect to the ship.
And of course there will be a not-so-obtrusive Sails of Glory logo somewhere in a corner :-)

Sounds like just what I'm looking for Roberto. I can then sail my ships up the Adriatic and have your magnificent Italian airforce send them to the bottom.
Any news about a mat with "No man's land" on it? I now have all three of the new mats plus one extra countryside one, and the sea plus a "No man's land" would just about make any scenario feasible.
Thanks for the heads up.
Rob.

Sounds promising Roberto.
A plain blue mat with separate compatible islands is the way to go.

I've just received the mats this morning ! And my first game on the Countryside mat. What a great pleasure ! (and it was a great duel with an Albatros D.V against a Sopwith Camel).
Magnificient game mat, excellent product, thanks to Ares Games ! (only 25€ each, a very good price too ^_^)
The mat quality is very impressive to me. Very good touch feeling, and very good play sensation.

Hmm - just picked up three mats over the weekend (Cold Wars) - 2 countryside and 1 city. Now if the SoG mats are compatible I'll need a coastal map too!

Actually you can see the coastal map used on Ares you tube SoG movement tutorial.

Dont know why they are being so slow in getting them out.

Just spoke to Milsims on the phone, they actually didn't get the delivery until Wednesday afternoon - WGF Dual packs, WGS RAP, new maps, WGF series I reprints, the lot. I was assured all pre-orders will be shipped by Monday, we should have them by Wed-Thu next week.

Yes, I agree. A "no-man's land" with trenches that would fit between two of the new countryside or city mats is possible the next matt I would need and use.

I already had both of the Wings of War gaming mats, but couldn't resist ordering the new Wings of Glory mats with all of the positive comments on the forum...and I'm very glad I did! :) They look amazing and the logo is barely noticeable!! I am looking forward to putting them into action. :fokker::camel:
