View Full Version : None: THE GRAND WORLD TOUR & LEND-LEASE 2013

OK folks, to quote one of Great Britain's greatest heroes: "I have a cunning plan my lord". Let's run this up he flagpole and see who salutes it.

I am thinking of sending a Wings of Glory WW1 bomber model, suitably adorned, on a world tour. The idea is to send it around members in different countries, with each member photographing the plane against a backdrop of a local landmark, filling in some details on a log book and send it to the next member. The photos will then be put in a forum album to mark its progress.

Eventually, the (hopefully) much-travelled bomber will be raffled or auctioned to provide funds to get next year's lend-lease candidate to Origins. So, a bit of fun and a chance to win a unique model.

A few things to be take note of before you all rush to join in the fun:

Each participating member will be responsible for postage costs on to the next member (a bit unlucky if you are the last in a country and have to send it overseas, but sadly unavoidable).

Each participant needs to be happy with giving out their snailmail address. I'll tell each member who to send it on to and give them the forwarding address

Each member will need to PM Mission Control (me) when they receive it and when they send it on and to whom they send it. This is to make sure its precise whereabouts are known and we can chase quickly if it gets lost in transit.

In order to get it to as many members as possible in the time available, you must not sit on the model (metaphorically) before doing the necessary and sending it on.

Still needs to be agreed whether it will be raffled or auctioned, but if a raffle I am thinking that participating members should get 2 tickets and non-participants one ticket for the same price.

More info as I make it up - err, I mean as it comes in :D

So for now, if you are interested drop me a PM so I can gauge whether this is a runner.

Steve

Indeed, a plan so cunning you could stick a tail on it and call it a weasel.

How about sending a scout miniature? It would be possible to send it overseas in a bubble envelope, greatly reducing the affiliated costs. ;)

I think maybe the scout idea is a cheaper option (and though it won't have the range of the bombers we won't have to worry too much about long runways)

I think this is a goer. Should we go for a distinctive repaint? That way if it does get "sat on" or mixed up in someone's collection it should be easy to spot.

I'm game.

Dave, by the time I've finished with it there's no way it will get mixed up :D.

Chris, Agreed - we are not at home to Mr Cock-up, and I'd lump Royal Fail in with USPS.

Jan, I'm going for a bomber as there is more room to show a bit of artistic flair (or I might paint it myself :D). For starters, I want to add roundels for each country it will hopefully pass through. That will leave plenty of room for "Grand World Tour" decals or possibly sponsorship logos (you never know, one of the retailers might want to chip in with a plane - hint, hint).

Just had another thought. I think there is a group ( I can't think of the name) that goes around using GPS or clues to find objects. When they find the hidden item they put something there. That could be something we do. When you get the pagkage take a picture as Steve asked and put something in the box to send it on.

Bob, I'll respond to your PM tomorrow when I'm more awake.

But let's keep this particular exercise as simple (and as cheap) as possible. I don't want to end up with a parcel the size of Hampshire that costs something equivalent to the Bolivian national debt to mail on. For this project we will stick to one item only - the plane.

GT,
I don't want to pour cold water on what is in itself a commendable idea to gain some publicity for the hobby, but by using more than one volunteer in each country you're potentially going to prolong this into oblivion logistically. If you assume the mini is received on Day 1, photographed in a location on Day 2 and posted on Day 3, even without transit times between volunteers, you're already looking at 75 days. I'd suggest that you might want to consider the random selection for a single person in each country/principality in the UK and each larger geographic area in the USA (based on time zone perhaps?), lest this project take forever to complete.

Yeah Balders, I've thought about that. We have theoretically about 6 months to get this done so I am confident that we can get it to most people who want to take part. But I am aware that no plan lasts longer than the first shot fired, so I will be monitoring progress carefully and adjust as necessary. Thanks for bringing it up though.

As far as other more interesting stamps along with those you've already listed above go, we're also still adrift Argentina, Brazil, Denmark, Greece, Singapore, Spain and the former Crown Colony of Hong Kong, recalling from people I'm sure I've corresponded with here on the forum.

We can safe time if we let the bomber circle first in the UK - then in USA/North America - then Australia/New Zealand - then the Rest of Europe.

Or in any other order divided in regions.

I think we're loosing the most time with crossing the Atlantic and the Pacific.

We don't (for obvious reasons) have many WWI or WWII related monuments in Stockholm. Well, yes we do have the Raoul Wallenberg one, but photographing that with a WWI bomber would be just a little bit too weird, even for me.
I'll probably just go with something touristy.
With a little bit of luck, it won't arrive with me until there's lots of snow - Giving me the opportunity to feed some stereotypes.

You kidding? Posting things to *Zimbabwe* makes it unlikely they'll get there.... :)

I'd heard about submarine activity off the NSW south coast during WWII, but never an air raid! What's the story behind the pub's name?

:D G'day Balders old chap!
As far as I know there was no actual Air Raid made on Moruya during WW2 but there were a lot of Shipping sunk off the cost around here but mainly by submarines. Probably just sounded a rather cool name for a Tavern.;)
We had a Squadron based at the current regional Aerodrome here doing Anti Sub work plus search & rescue.
Dont know if you saw the photo attached below (which I have posted previously) of a beautiful carved wood statue commemorating the Pilots who flew from here during the War.

Right, where are we with this?

Oh yes, we have 30 members (out of a total of 75 who have looked at this thread) from 10 countries signed up for this. The Caproni has been dis-assembled, had new tail skids added (the originals will not survive the journey), a pilot, navigator and engineer - all wearing dinner jackets - fitted, it's been de-greased and will be primed later outside if it stops raining long enough. Hopefully the whole thing will be finished before I receive Clipper's custom travelling case.

I'm now about to start working on the decals for it.

From GT's opener: 'Eventually, the (hopefully) much-travelled bomber will be raffled or auctioned to provide funds to get next year's lend-lease candidate to Origins. So, a bit of fun and a chance to win a unique model.'

Right, 4th November update.

The Caproni painting programme was delayed by a couple of days as I had to go oop North for work. The painting and gloss varnishing's finished, and I've started decorating the top wing with roundels from every country participating. Dom' s put my decal order in the post which will give me my Belgian and American roundels, and my bag of decals turned up some 30 year old Swedish roundels from an Airfix Basset kit, and Canadian roundels of the same vintage but unknown origin. I need to home produce Polish roundels (squareals?) and a 'roo and kiwi for the Aussie and NZ roundels.

Clipper Dave has sent me the travelling box he made, and very good it is too, photos later. Unfortunately it's exact dimensions are A5, which means the nice little A5 log book I found won't fit inside. Nil desperandum, I think I know where I'm going with this so not a major problem.

So, if all goes to plan :pray::pray: (it hasn't so far, but you never know!) I should have the plane finished off this coming week, and photographed and sent it on it's way the week after.

Finally all the elements have come together, despite Sod's Law manifesting itself at every opportunity (Computer gasped it's last costing me 2 grand to replace, printer running out of ink and having to order more, decals bubbling when gloss varnished, wing coming off when I thought I had used enough superglue to stick a Hummvee to the ceiling, SLR packing up when taking first tour shots at Hendon, forcing me to use SWMBO's pocket camera - my excuse for a slightly dodgy shot).

The Grand Tour is now officially under way. PMs later to the participants - and there is still time if anyone else wishes to join in.

Photos of the tour can be seen here (http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/album.php?albumid=1793). I'll be locking this thread at the weekend and starting a new sticky thread (http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/showthread.php?12456-The-Wings-of-Glory-Aerodrome-Grand-Tour-2012-2013&p=179508#post179508)to cover the tour proper.

I have also been remiss in not publicly thanking Clipper for coming up with the box which will keep this baby safe. Thanks Dave

Guess with all the Ohioans that've signed on so far I'd better signup and throw my "hat-in-the-ring" too, so we can make sure it makes proper appearances from north to central to southern Ohio as it passes through on the world tour. Perhaps we could arrange it so this special plane manages to fly through each of the major gaming events on it's travels...Origins, Gamecon, Cancon, plus the major annual events in New Zealand, Australia, Italy, England...Scotland...all the names escape me but you get the idea. Anyway, sign me up, please.

Yep, that should successfully hold things up for a good 6 months :hmm:. The whole point of this is that Keith gets it in plenty of time to raffle it to help fund getting next year's lend-lease candidate to Origins, so hanging on to it until the next show ist verboten. See the first post for details.

Anyways, PM me your snailmail addresses please, and I'll stick you on the flying rosta.
