Hi POTUS,
It sounds interesting, I'm keen to play, it just all depends on when it is held, I work some weekend nights and I live in Geelong so I have to add 1.5 hours of travel time.

Draft Scenarios (not final) from http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/WoWMelb/

Scenario 1 - The 20 minute men.

In the dark days of 1915, the life expectancy of a RFC new recruit over enemy territory was only 20 minutes. Your mission is not only to destroy as many enemy aircraft as possible, but survive the engagement.

This is a straight up dog fight. Player Pairs set up on oppoiste long table edges. Players may only target aircraft from opposing side. Game ends when all aircraft from one side have been destroyed or driven off. 1 hr game time limit.

Victory Points - 1 VP for personal kills (enemy aircraft destroyed by the player), 1 VP for player that survives mission, 1 VP to each player in the surviving pair if opponents all destroyed. (Nil Kill VP for driven off aircraft)

Scenario 2 - Scout Recon Mission

The Big Guns behind the enemy lines have been pounding our trenches for weeks. A scout recon mission has been ordered to find the guns behind the lines so our artillery can take it out!

The Mission objective is for the recon scout aircraft to survive to at least turn 10 and exist opposite board edge

Each side nominates one aircraft as being the reccon scout and the other aircraft as wingman escort.

Player Pairs set up on oppoiste long table edges & Players may only target aircraft from opposing side.

Wingman escort has infinite respawns - deploying from own table edge.
Scout reccon - only one life! When destroyed it may respawn as an escort along their deployment table edge

Scout mission is to complete recon by leaving opposite table edge AFTER ten turns (leaves table before turn ten is considered driven off / destroyed)

Game has a 1 hour time limit. Game ends when both scouts are destroyed or leave the table or if the time limit expires.

Victory Points - 1VP for player pair able to complete scout recon mission & successfully get the scout recon aircraft off table without being detroyed. Bonus 1VP for pilot of scout aircraft. 1 VP for personal kills (enemy aircraft destroyed by the player)

Scenario 3 - Fighter Ace!

Knights of the Sky clash high in the cold blue beyond. The victors are covered in the glory of becoming a fighter ace, the loosers suffering the fate of the firey plunge to the muddy trenches below.

Player Pairs set up on oppoiste long table edges. Players may only target aircraft from opposing side. Game has a 1 hour time limit. All aircraft after being destroyed or drvien off respawn and are delopyed the following turn on their starting table edge.

Victory Points - 1 VP for personal kills (enemy aircraft destroyed by the player). Bonus 1 VP for players able to destroy 5 or more enemy aircraft. Bonus 1 VP for player able to survive game without being destroyed.

In discussion with Joe Dodgy Dice & Games to supply aircraft - looks like they will be able to supply a good mix!

Organiser discussing dates with venue tonight - target dates being looked at during April, but avoiding public holidays (Easter / ANZAC Day)

Are you going to use altitude rules or any other advanced rules for the tournie

Are you going to use altitude rules or any other advanced rules for the tournie

Mitch brought up this very question when we were discussing it last Monday! :D

Thoughts were not to use the altitude or optional altitude rules for the competition (for sake of simplicity & speed of games)

Also discussed removing the "bang" explosion cards from the damage deck - current thoughts are to leave them in.

Roger Wilco

I'd take them out for a comp, they can spoil the skill element of the game. Explosions kept coming up when I was running a demo a long time back, even though they are the minority in the deck you often get the reminder that "a one in a million chance can happen nine out of ten times."
That said I have still never removed them from my decks

I think that Mitch may now be leaning towards removing the *BANG* explosion cards - I watched Mitch get blown out of the sky on the first card last night! :P

We always use explosion cards in our campaign games - they are a great leveller. In the Kaiserschlacht event I ran on the weekend the explosions came out thick and fast. Aces and newbies alike fell victim to fate.

I lost a Halberstadt CL.II crew to a second turn explosion on Sunday - C'est la Guerre!

Cheers,

Carl.

Was fully in favour of leaving it in, as it represents how fragile the aircraft were at that stage.

BUT, drawing it the very first time I was shot in a game has me thinking otherwise!

Then again, I'll only be flying as a bye army if needed anyway. So maybe I'll get to sit back and enjoy the anguished screams from around the room instead?

Mitch.

P.S. It may come down to a quick count of hands before the start of the night - would be the fairest way to decide?

Looks like I'm alright for the 16th, I will be bringing a friend and the slim possiblity of a third.

Hi All,

I now have confirmation of the venue's availability - so we're on for Friday the 16th of August.

More the merrier - as of next week will start to try and put together a list of attendees so I can make sure there are enough boxed sets/A decks available for the tables.

Mitch.

Wings of War “Over Melbourne 2010” Umpires Report

by Co-organiser Phil LeHunt

The Monday Knights at the Auburn Bowls Club hosted the 1st Wings of War “Over Melbourne Competition on Friday 16th April 2010. Some photos from the night can be seen http://www.flickr.com/photos/thetinsoldiers/ (Thanks Geoff!)

We had a great turn out for the event – an impressive 16 players – including players from Nunawading War-gamers Association, Knights of the Square Table & even an contingent who travelled up from Geelong! Andrew Oates impressed all by turning up dressed in flying leathers, goggles and a flying helmet. In addition to the 16 players, we also had a hand full of “observers” (or should I say hecklers?) who came down to see what Wings of War was all about

It was great to see the Wings of War playing community getting together, and I was impressed by the re-paints and scratch builds that players showed off on the night. (I also loved Trevor’s custom balloon base – very nice!)

Players were split equally between Allied and German forces and given an Official Wings of War Miniature to use for the evening which was also theirs to keep. :armata_PDT_11: Miniatures were supplied by competition sponsor, Joe Dodgy Dice & Games.

The night consisted of three scenario driven rounds with victory points accumulated for Kills, Survival & Completing Mission Objectives.

It was very interesting to see how a scenario can change the way players fly their planes – difference was noticeable between the cautious manoeuvring where players only live once and dog fighting when players could re-spawn. It sounded like a football match at times during the “dog fight” in the last round! (Geoff holding 13 damage cards and still with his Albatross still up & flying was AMAZING!) It was also interesting to see the different approach players took when completing the Recon mission – some staying to fight it out with their scout and others preserving their scout for dear life. I know that Steven was busting to turn his scout around to join the dog-fight!

Scenarios can be found on the Wings of War “Over Melbourne” Yahoo group http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/WoWMelb/files/

(Other links to the scenarios at http://www.wargamerau.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=90969&view=getnewpost

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/showthread.php?p=13382 )

The Award winners were:-

Steven – Best Pilot

Andrew – Best German

Mark C – Best Allied

Chippy – Fighter Ace

Trevor – Wingman

Mitch – Crash & Burn

The over-all victory for the evening (based on combined player Victory Points) goes to the Allies. The German players amassed a combined total of 43 Victory, however were narrowly beaten by Allies with a combined total of 50 Victory Points.

Special thanks to my Co-organiser and competition sponsor, Mitch Dovey of Joe Dodgy Dice & Games who really made the night possible by supplying the miniatures and setting up a trade stand for all of us to rummage through.

Thanks to the Monday Knights for opening the doors & especially to Chippy, Ed & Floppy for manning the bar. (I fly so much better playing Wings of War with a frosty beer!)

Congratulations should go to all participants for the night. Everyone played in good spirit and made the evening a pleasure to run. I thank you all and hope to see you at the next Wings over Melbourne.

Phil LeHunt

Hi Phil,
Thanks for organising the event, both Steve and I had a great time and it was good to catch up and chat with yourself and other like minded WoW players. I have to admit it was a very long drive home with Steve in the car. I think he mentioned that he won the tournie to me every three minutes of the hour and a half long return trip. Guess you have to come to expect that for a bloke that has just won his first "ever" anything. Ouch! I just got punched!

I have been playing a couple of games at the Geelong Gaming Guild the last couple of Mondays and other gamers from that club are now finally starting to show some interest, probably more in DoW than WoW. So next time theres a comp your way there might be a larger contingent heading up to Melbourne.

Again thanks for running a great show for everyone there and a big thanks to Mitch for sponsoring the event.
Regards
Trevor and Steve
