One more early war Nieuport for the showcase, this 'Bebe' flown by 12 victory French Ace Jean Navarre over Verdun in early 1916. The model is from Skytrex, one of the last batch I bought before the old boys sold up.

Currently working on my first none CP plane, my little Nieuport 11 is starting to look rather good just got to finish of the wheels, struts & tail. Hopefully my rondal decals will arrive today so I can finish him off and send to the front to face the dreaded Hun.

With a double-up de Guibert Nieuport N.16 from my third Balloon Busters Set I decided to do a quick WGF re-paint. I selected a Royal Flying Corps profile, an 11 Squadron Nieuport N.16 flown by Lt. Albert Ball in June and July 1916.

85395

On 26 June Lt. Ball attacked and destroyed an observation balloon with Le Prieux rockets flying this aircraft. The next day he was gazetted to receive the Military Cross and cited for his continuous determination to be at the enemy. On 2 July 1916 Albert Ball was also flying this Nieuport when he achieved a double victory shooting down a Roland C.II and an Aviatik.

85399

The re-paint was very simple:

1. Flat aluminium for the cowl;
2. One part Humbrol 74 (Linen) to four parts white to paint out the French roundels on the underside of the top wing;
3. Humbrol 78 (cockpit green) for the green camouflage over the existing dark brown.

85398

Decals were Skytrex (upper and underside wings) and Shed (36" white disc and British roundels over the existing fuselage Cockerill devices).

85397

Tamiya TS-80 flat clear spray finished the job.

Thanks Rob,

I saw your Ball N.16 on the first post, very nice.

One day when I feel like doing a fiddly job I'll go back and apply the roundels on the top underwing and the A134 serial on the rudder.

I did the repaint late last night and only had a 45 minute window today for the decals.

Change Step 1 'remove' to 'add, if necessary'. As Aleksandr Orloff would say, "Simples"!:p

Hello,

For my part, I have repaint (little) the official versions of Nieuport 16 for having the four balloon busters, by adding lines on the deuces for Chouteau, changing the marking for having Prince, and the same for Grandmaison (the rooster have a whiste crest for example) :

Having purchased two Italian Sottetenete Giovani Ancilotto Nieuport 11 Bebe scouts I looked for an alternate scheme for my 'spare' - and found a dearth of information.

In the end I selected Nieuport 11 serial N.1763 assigned to 75 Squadriglia Caccia in the second half of 1916. The squadron was formed at Tombetta field on 1 May 1916 under the command of Captain Scarpis Maffeo and assigned to the 3rd Air Defence Group with the task of protecting the city of Verona. I have not been able to determine precisely which pilot flew the aircraft as yet but there are several candidates named in this web article - http://www.ilfrontedelcielo.it/files_5/57_75.htm (in Italian).

215883

This was a very quick re-identification of the 'Bebe'. First I removed the existing serial number decal from the fuselage using some Micro-Sol and a sharp blade.

215885

Then I measured the side and top of the fuselage and printed a homemade decal (image below) which I applied to the fuselage just behind the cockpit.

215884

I made the decal about an eighth of an inch longer than the measurement to make sure it was not short then used a very sharp pair of craft scissors to trim the end.

This works if the planes I 'need' to paint for the upcoming battle are types I do not have or don't have enough of. I agree it is difficult to paint more of what you already have more than enough of. Luckily I don't have many in that catogory yet.

Hi Florian,

I was just thinking I had seen a post from you in a while.

I will be flying 'Blue Bird' in the OTT campaign that will start in March. It should be okay for the first few missions but the competition will get tougher as the missions move into August and September 1916.

1 Wing RNAS - Redford Henry 'Red' Mulock (Serial 3977 - red paint scheme) and Daniel Murray Bayne Galbraith (Serial 3986 - dark blue paint scheme). The serial numbers are for planes these pilots flew but the paint schemes are fictitious. The blue one was inspired by a later one for a RNAS Sopwith Camel (B7190 - WGR Hinchliffe). They will form part of my RNAS scout flight for the upcoming OTT campaign.

'Fixed' the edging between the CDL and blue on the fuselage and tail plus added a blue outline to the white bars on the wings. Not demarcation lines, although the lines serve that purpose, but tape along the rib that separates the white from the CDL. I had debated whether or not to have a blue edging. The white shows up well enough to the eye but not to the camera and these schemes are meant for the OTT AAR so in went the blue lines.

Thanks, chaps.

I’ve planned out the ‘squadron’ for the OTT campaign. Some with historical schemes and some not so much. I’m going with a RNAS unit as the RNAS seems to have been more flexible than the RFC for personalized aircraft. Plus a lot of Canadians / Commonwealth pilots in the RNAS which will figure into my AAR for the OTT campaign. You might not that blue one has Scottish ‘flag’ colours and the red one Canadian ‘flag’. The latter is a bit anachronistic as we didn’t get the maple leaf flag until 50-ish years later but it’s got the real life serial number of a plane flown by Canadian ‘Red’ Mulock - so a red scheme.

ShadowDragon
03-04-2020, 11:19
Fantasy paint schemes but the serial numbers are correct. Likely the planes were only CDL. The light blue scheme (3993 - Dallas) was inspired by Sopwith Camel C1555, 'Suds" (Luxmoore or Gamon, 78 Home Defence Sqn). The green/mahogany scheme (3994 - Norton) is probably more typical of Nieuport 16 RFC. I've kept the French markings on the underside of the top wing. These are the last Nieuport 11 I need for the OTT campaign Mission 1.

Not that the last attempt was extraordinarily successful. We will see how the newly promoted Oblt Fritz Böhning does. He will fly the blue Nieuport and since I have a few blue Nieuports in the RNAS squadron that may help him confuse the SeaDogs.

No repainting at all. Just added new decals:
French National Roundels are from WoG Aerodrome

Nieuport 11: "Zigomar", Nr "6". Escadrille 62eme Adj Paul Tarascon - 12 victoires.

This was Ancillotto's WoG Ni-11
I covered the Italian markings using Vallejo's Aged White, and applied home-printed decals for personal markings, and WoG Aerodrome for French National Markings.

Adj Paul Tarascon: While learning to fly in 1911, Tarascon was seriously injured in a crash, losing his right leg. Despite his handicap, he volunteered for the French Air Service in August 1914. He was accepted and received a Pilot's Brevet in December. During World War I, he became known as "l'as la jambe de bois" (the ace with the wooden leg). During World War II, Tarascon was a Colonel in the French Resistance.

All his planes were named "Zigomar!" which means something like "Penis" if I'm not wrong

I just have an EPSON XP-241. Very average home printer. The trick is usually getting your printing settings right, and your decal paper good quality and new.
For printing settings, I usually go for "Paper: Photo Glossy" and the highest possible quality. Make sure headers are clean
For decal paper go for Testors and make sure you don't store it for too long, since decal sheets dry out with time: just buy and print.

Zigomar is a character in the Sazie novels. From the French wiki bio on Sazie:

Zigomar , nom masculin Sens 1. Anatomie. Argot:

Short tanslation: Zigomar is a slang word that designs male sexual organs in a vulgar way. It is a very dated term, used mainly in 19th century novels.

Source:
https://www.linternaute.fr/dictionnaire/fr/definition/zigomar/

It seems it also means a man that behaves in a very flamboyant way. It seems it is also a type of cavalry saber

What Chris said. I'm jealous. My hobby materials are not all available as I'm in the middle of packing (again) for a move. Next winter I have a lot of catching up to do!

Great N11. It will be a sight your Austrians will admire before trying to shoot it down.

And now, a nearly completed Rumsey from the Escadrille Americaine. Using a Chaput as the base, I painted the the lower left wing and tail flaps linen as the plane had been wrecked and replace with parts from another N.11. The wheel covers have been painted, and over the off "brown" of the Ares offering I went with a Vallejo flat brown. I added the stripes on the wings as well. I have some touch up to do, and still trying to figure out how to paint RUM on each side, then a coat of varnish, and this bebe (pun intended) will be making an appearance on the table.

Here's another addition to the Escadrille Americaine, Victor Chapman's N.11. Chapman was the first pilot of N.124 to be killed, shot down by Kurt Wintgens flying a Halberstadt D.II. I have given up on getting the photos to align correctly!

Decals have just been added, and once dry a coat of matte varnish will be added to mute down the satin coat I used to seal the plane. Easy mod...took a Chaput and painted it using the AK Clear Doped Linen Version2, which matches the underside of the plane fairly well. Added some crimson to the wheel covers, and then the decals (the French roundels are still on the underside of the wings, just as the real Chapman plane). I've not fiddled with decals in 25+ years, but using the Vallejo decal fix and decal softener I think they came out just fine.

UPDATE: And with a coat of matte varnish.

Good looking Nieuport. This is Chapman's 80 hp machine. He also had a 110hp Nieuport which was green.

Fiddly work on the MG, Chris, well done

Thank ya, Dave, it wasn't quite as bad as I'd feared. I tried to unbend the smashed brackets but no joy. Then I thought briefly about leaving them as-is (too OCD). I clipped them out and the gun still leaned a bit to one side on its large post (couldn't bend it back - they're quite strong - and I didn't want to snap it off with too much force). I have some very thin styrene tubing which worked for the lower brace but wanted something thinner for the upper one and a hair from a "chip brush" worked great.

The poor Albert Ball model was in rough shape. I sanded down several areas where the decal was wrinkled but missed some other spots (the tail being most noticeable, and some rough areas on the rockets). The rockets look nice painted up, though.

In the profile I wondered what the off-white was on on the struts. I couldn't find any info but perhaps an asbestos wrap? Some photos show some sort of covering while others just have the mounting brackets on the struts. The profile for this plane:

My guess it that the struts have metal pieces where the rockets angle could be adjusted?

Chris posted a link to an excellent article about the Le Prieur rocket in the thread I started here:

https://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/showthread.php?36597-Le-Prieur-rockets

According to this article, the interplane struts were protected by thin sheet metal over a layer of asbestos. The lower wing leading edge was similarly shielded.
