After reading Keith's review and the following comments,
I made some quick touchups to my just delivered Elwood Camel.
Shaved and repainted the prop, drilled out the wing cut outs. Painted the cylinders a blacked steel.
Touched up the cut outs and the edges of the wings. Finally, I gave the silver guns a "Blued" color.
Took about 1.5 hours. Now its ready for a mission.

Nice repaint Roland. N6812 is one of the few remaining original Camels and it is displayed in the Imperial War Museum in London these days. It's on my repaint list to do one day. Its the 2F1 Camel that shot down Zeppelin L53 on 11th August 1918.

Captain Froggy
09-11-2013, 09:53
Yes, I have read his history, and seen few pictures of the exhibition in the museum. But I think it had been repaint, because there is a difference with the illustration in Osprey Air Vanguard 3 : the blue colour of the wings. And after my checking,I see that I have to add a little repaint on the main boddy, which is full brown...

This was a Barker repaint. I repainted the green with Humbrol 75 ( a tip from Nightbomber). I painted around the roundels so they are still original Ares decals. Also the bottom of wings, machine guns and wheels/supports are original Ares. The tail wing is also an Ares original with a little touch up of the red.
The rest of the decals (fuselage, letter "U" upper and lower and top of fuselage) I made. I did make a decal sheet including the upper and lower roundels and tail but did not need them.
With that said, using the Barker plane made this a fairly easy repaint. Since I make my own decals most of the time, that was where most of the hours were spent on this repaint.
I used mirco set for the first time when applying the decals and really liked the results.

159095

Even got a custom bio card done. Now if I can twist Mike's (OldGuy59) arm to make me a plane card it will be complete.:)

Thank you Ian.....appreciate the rep points.

Rob, to answer your question I use white decal paper and "invert" so to speak the letter.
What I do is pick a color (using the paint program on your OS) and fill it in around the letter or image that is white. In this case I picked a color that was very close to the paint color. Once the decal is printed and ready to use, I trim out the white letter/image as close as I can.

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb127/moose7093/Maclauren%20wing%20U1a_zpsdf6nvl9j.png (http://s207.photobucket.com/user/moose7093/media/Maclauren%20wing%20U1a_zpsdf6nvl9j.png.html)

After applying the decal/dries, I touch up over the decal and around the lettering.
Like I mentioned in my post above, I used the mirco set for the first time. This has made a big difference in my method. Before some of the decals I would touch up using this method would still show the line or layer of the decal. The micro set looks to have solved that problem for me.

A very unique one and authentic.
K.M.Murray's personal plane. One and only Camel in Polish Air Forces in the war of 1920.
Chequers pattern on the upper wing is original and strange a bit, but a photo taken after the crash reveals it clearly.
Only idividual number code is missing on repaint, but who could have such small decals;).
Special thanks go to Zoe Brain, who provided me with excellent "Kościuszko" Sqn. insignia.

... Only individual number code is missing on repaint, but who could have such small decals?).

You might find a suggested answer here Andy - http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/showthread.php?24014-Tiny-decals-needed-for-moranes-serials-RFC

Sopwith Camel of Ken Unger:
My Unger repaint was inspired not only that he was a US flyer (flying for the British) but the couple of scrapes he had with Fokker Dr.I Ace Josef Jacobs; who is one of my favorite pilots.

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb127/moose7093/Madison%20Ace_zpsji2abwnd.jpg (http://s207.photobucket.com/user/moose7093/media/Madison%20Ace_zpsji2abwnd.jpg.html)
Above is a nice painting from O'neil Avaition Art of their dogfight. Their is a neat little story that goes with the painting.
http://www.michaelonealaviationart.com/madison_ace.html

Unger’s plane is a repaint of a Barker Camel which is the choice of Camel repaints. After prepping the airplane, repainted it with Humbrol acrylic #75…..painted around the wing roundels and tail marking.

Did not paint the underside, but did touch up under the upper wing at the wing struts with Humbrol acrylic #103.
Repainted the machine guns with aprx. a 3 part Vallejo white and 1 part Model Master gun metal. Repainted the prop with some mysterious brown I had mixed from another project. So wheels, struts and underside of plane are original paint. So, overall a fairly easy repaint.

Created a decal sheet which I have uploaded in the Hobby section. The decal sheet has all the decals needed including the roundels (upper & lower). I did not use all of them, as like I mentioned above I painted around the roundels and tail marking but for those that may not want to paint that close, I included them in the sheet.

For the white circle, I took a 3 ring paper punch and “Punched” out a circle of the white decal paper. It is the same size as the decal I created on the sheet. After applying the decal, and sealing it I noticed that the green bleed through in spots. Instead of trying to remove it at this point since I sealed it with the bonder, I put a coat of the Vallejo white on it, sealed it and applied another white circle decal over the top of it and resealed again. My fear was a build up would occur but it seemed to turn out good. I also use Mirco Set on all my decals now so that is a big help. If I had to do it all over again, I would have used the paper punch on some sticky label paper, took the label paper with the hole in it and used it as a stencil and just painted on the dot.
Overall, I liked how it turned out.

I also forgot to mention that the roundel on the fuselage and the wing struts are factory finish.

Another thing was during the prepping; I used a sanding pencil and lightly went over The white bands that were on the fuselage to smooth them out a bit.

Decided to do something with my spare Ellwood Camel's and having found some pics of markings in a very old Military Modelling mag I opted for a couple of Camels from B Flight of No 3 Sqn RFC / RAF:

206746
B Flight had white painted wheel covers and numbers to identify the individual machines. A & C Flights had letters with red and blue wheel covers respectively.
Number 7 is the machine of George Raby (aka Jack) Riley MC DFC (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_R._Riley) 13 victories and a well known ace balloon buster. Not sure of 8 but that could be be Lt J.A McDonald's (https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=wZrgAwAAQBAJ&pg=PT96&lpg=PT96&dq=LT+J.A.McDonald+3+sqn+rfc&source=bl&ots=JTlexbZk_Z&sig=8TAygGOtztswfTXL5ZrntruJ-pQ&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiT9drf9_zOAhWQF8AKHSaQDJQQ6AEIGzAA#v=onepage&q=LT%20J.A.McDonald%203%20sqn%20rfc&f=false) he had 5 victories I think I read somewhere.
3 Sqn (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No._3_Squadron_RAF)were in the same Wing (13) as 56, 60 & 87 sqns so a good pick as it turned out; it was also where McCudden started his career.

Incidentally, I found that Revell 42 Yellowish Olive a good match for PC10. Comes as acrylic & oil paint.

Okay, so now the elves have some questions . . . according to your original graphic, they see a different color of blue for the wide diagonal stripes - a dark blue - (upper left wing) instead of the insignia blue radiating off the roundels and alternating with the white thin diagonals on the right panel . . .

http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h379/Revchaos/2013%20new%20wow/Camels/20161107_154410_zpswtidihd6.jpg (http://s1106.photobucket.com/user/Revchaos/media/2013%20new%20wow/Camels/20161107_154410_zpswtidihd6.jpg.html)

Is the leading edge on the lower right wing as my sketch shows, a different brown or dark blue for the triangle adjacent to the white stripe and the diagonal a PC-10 brown or is the triangle shape PC-10 and the wider diagonal dark blue as it is on the top right wing??

Matt,
Royal Naval Air Station Eastchurch was a training school, so this plane was never on the front line.

The powers-that-be in the British air services of WWI were adamantly against any personalization or extravagance in paint schemes on the front lines. Even the color striping on engine cowlings of the No. 10 RNAS Camels was ordered off within weeks of appearing, regardless of how popular the scheme is now.

Being that it wasn't ever in combat, Ares would be unlikely to produce it. Clipper, though? All bets are off.

Perhaps it could 'fly in anger' in a Home Defense role, Mike?;)

Nevertheless, it really is quite lovely - almost a shame the dark 'base color' isn't a fresh coat of PC10 rather than black - I think that would look even neater in the color mix.

The road to rocky ruin - my first repaint, with thanks to Oberst Hajj. Needed another RAF Camel for the OTT Mission 12 scenario. Decided I wanted a 209 Squadron aircraft, but had difficulty finding very many references for them. Settled on this "Brown" repaint as Oberst Hajj posted a very nice and useful photo of it, right at the beginning of this thread. If anyone has any information on more, different, designs for this Squadron, either as 209 or RNAS 9, I'd be grateful for a look see :)

Today I present you with ….

The simplest of all Sopwith Camel repaints …

239941

239940

But .... it is not just a another Camel ....
It is the Camel flown by the Baroness Petra “Chérie” De Karlowitz during 1917.
Not possible ? You don’t believe me ?
OK, here’s the story as given to me by the famous Italian historian Dr. Attilio Micheluzzi.
Petra (“Chérie” as she was known to friends) was born in 1894 as the daughter of Baron Jan de Karlowitz (born in Krakow, 1849 – died in Paris 1912) and his beautiful wife Eliane (born in Paris 1884 - died in Vienna 1909).
Jan De Karlowitz was a very successful businessman owning banks and insurance companies in the Far East, rubber plantations on Borneo and Sumatra and also a large trading house in Hamburg.
After his death his beautiful, young, intelligent, enterprising and non-conformist daughter took care of his various businesses, although only 18 years old. Already early in 1913 she learned to fly (please note: there were at that time only 4 women in Europe with a pilot’s license !) and soon she honed her flying skills to perfection.
When war in Europe broke out in 1914 Petra was in the Far East attending to her late fathers business in the Chinese province Canton. During the first years of the war she stayed neutral until in late 1916 she started to favour the Entente (esp. the Italians and the Brits). Later asked why, Petra answered that she had nothing against the Germans or the Austrians and actually admired them. Her choice, so to speak, was based on nothing more than a feeling.
In 1917 she was living together with her Chinese manservant in a mansion near Sluis, a small village in the utmost South West of The Netherlands, close to the Belgian border and the North Sea. Through ways as yet undiscovered she had acquired a Sopwith Camel and painted it an overall “fog grey”, with no national or other insignia at all.
With this Camel she flew quite a few missions … going out over the North Sea and coming back over the flat countryside of Belgian Flanders. She endeavored to come to the aid of entente airmen being attacked by German planes. After her actions (which brought her several aerial victories, enough to make her at least a double ace !) she would disappear as quickly as she had appeared into the grey clouds, which made her "fog grey" Camel almost immediately invisible...
Both the German High Command as well as the British were baffled by what was happening. Whatever they tried, they never found out. Nor did the Dutch ever find out that from their neutral country a ghost plane was involved in the war.
Later in the war Petra was active in and around Venice and Istanbul. But alas, the last she was heard of was when she boarded a train in Istanbul to travel to Vienna. The most likely reason she never was seen again is that the train en route through the Balkans was attacked by armed bands … one can only hope she died fighting ...
And so ends the story of a remarkable woman … One can but wonder what would have become of her if she had survived the war …

To add to the credebility of this story I must tell you that it was none other than Andrea Angiolillo who first told me this story and who put me into contact with Dr. Attilio Micheluzzi …

In memory of Petra "Chérie" De Karlowitz :salute:

cheers

I'm hoping someone on the forum can answer something that is bugging me.

Looking back at my post, showing the RNAS 9 "B" flight paint conversion: Cross & Cockade printed the design I have tried to copy (a cross made up of white, light blue and dark blue bands), but they do say that interpreting the "colours" from black and white photos is very difficult.

I see elsewhere on the forum, a very similar design, but with a central red stripe in the cross, rather than blue. Can anyone tell me a) are they two seperate aircraft, both from "B" flight and if not which is correct? b) Where can I obtain information on the aircraft with the "red" cross, if they are the same aircraft and the blue cross is incorrect?

I saw some photos of a model entitled "Ship's Camel" on the Web and liked the paint scheme so I duplicated it. I stripped the model first of all paint and airbrushed and brush painted it.

Lovely work on the repaint, Jim - it's neat to see the Camel 'broken' into its constituent parts! And it looks splendid sitting next to your redone Fokker DVII:sAprvd:

All the best,

Jim, excellent work there! How did you take it apart without breaking/cracking the wings?

Jim, excellent work there! How did you take it apart without breaking/cracking the wings?

I soak them in 91% isopropel alcohol for at least 24 hours to get the decals and paint off. Then I ever so gently give the parts a wiggle to break the glue bond. I work the fuselage bottoms with an exacto knife like a pry bar, very slowly and evenly. The parts eventually pop off. I have had one that was stubborn and broke, but that was one out of about 15 I have done and was easily glued back together. I am now working on a DR1...

I have only removed the upper wing and undercart on a single Wings Pfalz D.III, use the freeze/boil method. The wing popped off quite easily.

The lower wing and tail refused to budge, so I left them in place for the repainting process.

Yours looks cleaner than mine Eric. I didn't strip mine. Perhaps I should seriously think about stripping them prior to repainting.

My first repaint: Lt Emile J Lussier No73 Sqn RAF from a nexus Barker. Most successful American camel pilot for RAF.

Also my first ever decals. From miscmini.com and homemade (what font does everyone use for plane #? I went with Stencil and seems ok).
I messed up the port side "D" but will let it live in infamy. The tail is a bit wonky on this one but not as noticeable in person, let's call it battle damage.

And there is always some random piece of lint that shows up in camera lol.

Big thanks to Teaticket (Peter) for sending scans of C deck alt cards - they turned out great and I appreciate it!

'Nexus' Sopwith Camel "Olieslagers"), bought ready repainted from ebay as a German captured plane.

Undersurfaces repainted with a 50/50 mix of 'Vallejo' "Orange Brown" and "Pale Flesh Tone"
Upper surfaces 'Vallejo' "German Camo Dark Green"
Personal scheme triangles "Ochre Brown"/"White"

All other colours 'Vallejo'.........
engine "Oily Steel", inked "Black", highlighted "Silver"
prop "Dark Earth" with "Dark Sea Grey" tips
struts "Leather Brown"
tyres "Cold Grey"
pilot "Leather Brown"

Decals - "Games Workshop" zig-zags already in place on model
'1/144 Direct' roundels and tail stripes.

tail stripe decals went on crooked (!) so I overpainted them with 'Vallejo' "Black", "Moon Yellow" and "Vermillion".

Here is my very first attempt at repainting Ares planes. All were transformed from Kissenberth Camels. RNAS 9 Sopwith Camels captured my imagination from the first one I saw.

B7202 Pilot: Unknown
B3905 “Muryel” Pilot: Flight Lieutenant Charles Anstey Narbeth

B6327 “Maude II” Pilot: Flight Sub-Lieutenant Harold Francis Stackard
B6381 “Daphne” Pilot: Flight Sub-Lieutenant Merrill Samuel Taylor

B3884 “Dorothy” Pilot: Flight Sub-Lieutenant Arthur William Wood
B3898 “Doris” Pilot: Flight Commander Joseph Stewart Temple Fall

Decals by Larry Gill
303885

I learned so much on this forum to guide me in my first ARES repaints…
• Teaticket’s sharing of his painting techniques and general encouragement
• ReducedAirFact’s PC10 color guide that informed me that RNAS Camels were a bit greener than the rest
• Flying Helmut’s recipe for applying decals AND for listing out the paints used on his awe inspiring creations – I no longer fear any decal and my order for Vallejo Brown Violet is in
• Mikeemagnus for early help in research – I now have a subscription to Cross & Cockade International because of their 23 page article on RNAS 9
• Oberst Hajj for the spinning props which go on Camels like… stink on a camel

And in the process of all this… I made another new friend. Special thanks to Larry Gill for working with me on development of an incredible decal sheet to match my interpretations of RNAS 9. The level of detail and perfection from Larry was so over the top - down to different fonts for the aircraft names that match the actual photos. He made two versions of the “X” on the fuselage for B3905 “Muryel” because he noticed the angles in one photo were different than another – so he did both! He even threw in bonus colors for some aircraft markings where the photographs made us doubt – is it red rather than blue? He threw in an additional non-RNAS 9 marking just because he thought I might like to try it.

And yes he plans to sell these decals as soon as he gets his printer repaired. I'm why he can't have anything nice!

On these four I used 70.887 (US Olive Drab, aka Brown Violet) which is what I prefer using to represent PC10. However, I've found that 70.975 (Military Green) is a very close match to the green that Ares uses, so if I were painting to match, I would use that. For the blue color I used 70.965 Prussian Blue.

In this photo (another recent repaint), I used Military Green because I wanted to color match the Roy Brown camel next to it. It has a little bit shinier finish at this point because I hadn't yet applied the final coats of matte varnish, but you can see the color is very close.
