To many issues with their unions and they tend to disappear around Christmas time so I use Japanese kitsune spirits, they can be a little mischievous at times but they get the job done! Although I won't employ any with less than 5 tails, need to be pretty clever to rig at 1/144 scale!

Thanks for the compliments. Rob, I brush painted those. Those are Shapeways models, the only thing that I really don't like about them is the surface has a gritty appearance and I noticed that after I finished painting them. I've tried to fix that problem with subsequent Shapeways models without any real success, usually end up with broken or gouged models that should go in the trash but are still on the workbench. Neil, I was in one of the earlier OTT campaigns a couple years ago but stopped after about 5 or 6 scenarios due to professional and personal problems. I may join in a future campaign.

I also found the Shapeways to be grainy even when spraying, especially in silver, hence my comment. i have used various methods reccomended here for improving the surface, and they do help a lot, but the difficulty I still find is in maintaining a perfect line thickness when painting fine detail. However, as you will have noticed the grain is a lot less noticeable on the table than in a photograph.I do hope that you will find time to rejoin us in our OTT. campaign. You may have spotted that time has slipped backwards, so our characters are a lot greener than they were by 1918. Otherwise it is business as usual.

I am glad to find this thread and see all of the great Nieuports out there. My brother and I have split a Valom two pack kit. He has not built his kit yet as he was busy with the D.VII contest (another Valom kit). Perhaps you have seen Bob's Ulrick Neckel D.VII. Bob is not just my Brother, but a great modeler! Anyway while he was building the D.VII I tried my best with the Nieuport - Charles Nungesser.186646186647186648. I decided (after rigging my DH.2) to go back and do the same for the N.17. So far I have completed the wing rigging. Landing gear and stabilizer control cables will be next after I get myself a small enough pin drill bit.187729. I found my pin drill bit and proceeded to finish the rigging and control cables. A couple of additional photos.187884187885. The essentially ridged monofilament thread goes along way to the ease of installation. Still fiddly!!!! Here is a final photo "in the air"188663

This is of course a French Adventure.

This is a Valom model.

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=189367&d=1456904351

She said "Why do you play with Germans in your solo campaign?" And you have to be very careful when you reply to your French girlfriend. "Well..."

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=189366&d=1456904348

"The Gerrmans invaded Frrance, oui?" She really doesn't have a strong French accent, but I'm a sucker for French accent, sorry.

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=189365&d=1456904346

So, what do I tell her? "The painting schemes and a sense of medieval chivalry..." I think that she likes me, because she bought it...

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=189364&d=1456904343

Then I have this idea... And I paint this plane for her. ;)

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=189360&d=1456904334

The details will come later. But the double fishes is important.

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=189359&d=1456904331

And she loved the Nieuport. And she took most of the pictures.

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=189357&d=1456904327

And I can still play Joachim Lisbon... She frown at it but finally accepted it. It's the Lisbon part, I guess...

Here's mine, Charles Guynemer's Nieuport 17. This is a Valom kit, my first attempt at anything this small and the first model I've done in at least 20 years. The photo etched parts are very frustrating and I ended up using paperclip for the wing struts instead. These closeups will reveal my errors and mistakes and there are plenty, but I'm pleased enough with the result that I think I'll finish the SE5a and Pups that I bought along with this kit.

Here are a couple more Nieuports I finished recently. I've been too lazy I guess to set up the good camera so hopefully these pictures are ok. One of them is a shapeways model, I used decals from the Valom kit. The other is my 2nd model from the Valom kit - The decals are home printed, except for Nungesser's black heart insignia and the tail number decals, which were left over from the Valom kit.

On the Nungesser Nieuport I decided to try a different method of attaching the top wing than what I've done on my other Valom kits. On all my others, I glued the struts nearest to the cockpit first, then attached the top wing, then added the struts near the wing tips. On this one I glued the struts nearest the wing tips first, to the bottom of the top wing. Then I glued the top wing to the fuselage/bottom wing and last added the struts near the cockpit. I like this method better and I think I'll continue to do it this way on any others I do. The wings turned out more even and level than my others.

You'll notice that on the bottom wing there are two little dimples where I intended to place the struts, but I had to shift the top wing over a bit in order to center it over the bottom wing. If I were doing it again I wouldn't mark the bottom wing like that until I'm ready to do the final placement.

Taken from the Series 3 thread....

I've been using a square brass rod for my Valom kits, building struts and undercarriage out of it, and I've been quite pleased with the results. You can see my Pup results here (http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/showthread.php?11365-Official-Sopwith-Pup-painting-thread&p=405050&viewfull=1#post405050) and here (http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/showthread.php?11365-Official-Sopwith-Pup-painting-thread&p=422136&viewfull=1#post422136).

Also see here (http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/showthread.php?11069-Official-Nieuport-17-23-painting-thread&p=416519&viewfull=1#post416519) a description of how I did the wings so they turn out level... I do the struts near the wing tips first, then do the struts near the cockpit last. This method made my last Nieuport turn out a lot more level than my previous attempts and I'll continue using that method. (Scroll past the shapeways pics to get to the Valom pics.) I didn't think of this method until after I had finished the Pups, or I think they would have turned out more level.

The Nieuport also uses the square brass rod.

Using the brass rod for struts and undercarriage, I do think they are suitable for gaming as the brass rod makes them much more sturdy. They might still break given a long fall, but so might the Ares/Nexus minis. That said, I still don't hand out my Valom minis for others to play with.

Brian, how thick is the square rod you are using for the struts?

Hi Keith, they are 1/32" which is about .8mm. The product I bought is "K & S #5082 1/32 Sq Bar". It contains three 12" pieces. Oddly I can't find K & S #5082 by searching online, but I bought it at Hobby Lobby.

Thanks. That's .03125" and the Ares Camel struts are .037" and my clear spinning props are .03". So my material should be just about right... I think I might have to try cutting some on the laser.

While I agree that the Valom take some care in assembling, it can be done with a minimum of hair loss and will stand up to adult play. I have a N.17 on the bench to assemble. I'll document wing assembly attachment for the more adventurous and post somewhere.

My Valom Fokker DVIIs have stood up to game play with no problems at all.

The PE struts are STRONGER than plastic replacements, not weaker.

I will soon start building a pair of Nieuport 11s (and might do a pair of Nieuport 17s at the same time) so will see how they go.

How so? The PE parts I have bend a lot easier then plastic parts, and when they do bend, you can't get them to bend back straight. My main concern (besides working with the tiny PE struts) is lateral forces bending the top wing out of alignment.

Not really sure why that's a concern for me, since my planes never get played with except once a year at Origins.

This is my first repaint. I ended up with an extra N17 and decided to turn it into a captured aircraft. I used Army Painter plate mail silver as a base coat. Tamiya fine undercoat and Delta oyster white for the wing flashes. Testors gloss coat went over that. The decals were from Zoe. I used MicroSol over the decals. After all was dry I used Army Painter anti shine.

I printed the decals using Testors paper. I then used Testors Decal Bond over the top. It didn’t work. The decal wiped right off the paper. I then used Testors Gloss Coat instead. That worked great. I’m not sure I like the Anti Shine at the end as well. It seems to have darkened the whole model.

Printing your own decals for the first time takes some degree of courage and experimentation. Glad that my designs and your prowess at printing them gave such a great result.

Decal designs inspired by this profile, though the original photos show crosses are a bit smaller than depicted.

For an upcoming convention:

262395

Originally a Baracca Nieuport 17, as it was the easiest repaint, needing only the side decals painted over with silver. I thought. The underside of the wings are green, white, and red for the Italian flag, not clear doped linen. Kevin [miscmini] custom made the decals for this and two other planes.

Two more Valom kits completed - Nieuport 17's of Billy Bishop (blue cone de penetration) and Alan Duncan Bell-Irving. The inspiration for the Bell-Irving is from the Vimy flight plane with a small difference. I have the black stripe further back because I put the 'B 1' decal on the top of the fuselage too far back for the black stripe to be in the same position as the Vimy flight plane.

Lovely Nieuports with a clean finish! Is there an option at shapeways to add a peg on the model?I don't think there is an option. I think you have to look out for models that have that peg included, I haven't seen those though.
@Alex: That's a very nice clean look on that top wing. How did you do that? My Shapeways look more like the upper side on that bottom wing...

ReducedAirFact

Lovely Nieuports with a clean finish! Is there an option at shapeways to add a peg on the model?

I'll speak for myself... I don't add the peg on my models¹. I figure a good number of people who are willing put in the work to paint a plane are going to use a more flexible mount anyway and would just end up cutting it off. And for the folks that would want a peg, there are options to buy a set of pegs and glue them on.

Anticipating the next question, "why not offer both?" While there is no monetary cost in maintaining two models at Shapeways, there is a time-cost every time they change their pricing or their modeling rules, and it would double the number of planes you have to look through when you do a search and double the number of 1:144 models I have to maintain.

¹=one with one exception for a model that is supposed to be flown inverted (http://shpws.me/MFZV).

Repainted some Nieuport 17 to add to my Italian Airforce.

Took the base Ares Baracca Nieuport and this is what I have.

First, a home made decal. Quarter moon. Seen this marking in the Italian aces book.

293581

Second, I saw this marking in the Italian Aces book. I used a Misc Mini WWII Japanese set to get the red circle. I then used an I-94 set for the white star. Put the red circle down first and the star on top. Turned out really good.

293582

Third, another home made decal. Again, marking I saw in Italian Aces book. I really like how this one turned out.

293583

Finally, I thought Griffin would look cool. Decal from a misc mini decal sheet.

Baracca now has some wing mates to go hunting with!

Ares N17 Baracca

Wings and Fuselage - GW Runefang Steel (touch ups where needed)
Propeller and Struts - Foundry Chestnut 53a
Circle and Star - Foundry Scarlet 38b and Valom White 70.951

Decals - MiscMini

These Ares Baracca models have quite a lot of defects, especially on the upper wings where the cabane struts are not fitted and leave two distinct holes.
Couldn't find a suitable red circle or white star so ended up overpaitning a Italian red roundel and hand painting the star. Then noticed a post a few pages back from Camelbeagle that combined Russian and Japanese markings to produce a great result. May have to try that out but this will do in the meantime.

This is the first of three Italian N17s on the painting board. The others will follow on in a day or two.

Don't think it's a defect, Gary - they're for something (but don't ask me what!). Take a look at this pic, you can see them clearly on the top plane:

Yeah we do !
They're the Aileron cranks, according to a cutaway diagram I found - they are connected to the ailerons leading edge by 30mm Dural 'torque' tubes & transfer motion of the stick to actuate the ailerons; appears they may go around the rear spar, hence the ring shape.

80a Squadriglia insignia was apparently a red star on a white circle within a black border. However I couldn't find an image of Cabruna's N17 so instead I used the red heart and white circle taken from his SPAD VII when flying with 77 Squadriglia. If anyone has more infomation on his N17 I'd be very grateful.

This is the last N17 (at least for a while) but I will be painting some more SPADS both VIIs and XIIIs.

From Italian Aces of World War I and their Aircraft, p. 449. (Gentilli, Iozza, and Varriale; Schiffer Military History)

Profile 18: Nieuport 17, serial number unknown, maresc. Ernesto Cabruna, 80ª Squadriglia, summer/autumn 1917: The caption of a photo describe[s] this aircraft as that of maresciallo Cabruna, while visiting his old reconnaissance unit, the 29ª squadriglia, in Cavazzo Carnico. The Nieuport is a French-built aircraft, without serial number on the tail. On the fuselage is visible the Red Star, the unit badge. Only the Vickers gun shortage justify[sic] the use of the armament of the Lewis gun mounted over the top plane. Cabruna was transferred to 80ª squadriglia in September or October 1917 and the photo was taken in this period, before the Italian retreat to the Piave.
The picture shows a Nieuport 17 in white/silver with a solid red star (no border), normal rotation, about half way down the fuselage, no Vickers, top-wing Lewis, normal Italian underwing (red left), rudder green-white-red front to back. (The picture referred to is reproduced on p.149.)

Here are a couple of Czar Romanov Russian Empire Nieuport 23.

Vallejo Aluminum on fuselage.
Vallejo Black on tail.
Vallejo White to paint out roundels.

Roundels are Miscmini decals.
Banner decal is home made.
Skull and Bones on tail are Miscmini.
Skull and Bones on top of plane are from the Nieuport 11 Valom kit.
Roundel and Skull/Bones are two different Misc mini decals. I put the roundel down, then the skull and bones on top. Turned out real good,

The first here is inspired by a Nieuport 11 scheme. I really like it, and thought it would look good on a Nieuport 23.
