making a tabletop mat!

Hello everyone. After learning about the scarcity of the Nexus mats(of which I have one) I am considering buying some baize or similar cloth in light green colour. I also wonder about the feasability of painting on this various trenches,buildings, an airfield etc. Nothing very elaborate but enough to break up the playing surface.

Any comments very much looked forward to, from all you chaps when your in the mess knocking back the gin.
