Julius Buckler

Buckler's story is one of incredible durability. Wounded FIVE times Buckler's 36 victories earned him a Pour Le Merite, the Prussian Military Merit Cross, & the Iron Cross.

Prior to the 14th of February 1917 Julius began his career working under Anthony Fokker as an architecture student at age 15. He joined the infantry and was wounded 3 times and transferred to the German Air Service in 1917.

On this date in 1917 Julius Buckler claimed his second victory as a part of Jasta 17. It was a Caudron West of Facq Wood. The likely model was a Caudron R11. You can read more about it at: http://www.militaryfactory.com/aircraft/detail.asp?aircraft_id=608

Buckler would go on to record 35 confirmed victories and 2 unconfirmed. As a part of his flying career he would be wounded in a single sortie in the chest and both arms. These wounds would not prove fatal and the nearly indestructible Buckler would rejoin Jasta 17, record 3 more victories, and be wounded again.

Buckler's book, "Malaula! The Battle Cry of Jasta 17" would be released in 1939 to bolster the morale of young Luftwaffe pilots. More info from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1904943802/
