Introducing the Handley-Page 01-07-2016

A games session at New Buckenham Historical Wargaming Society. It was run by peterhall.

  1. The Germans are prepared.

  2. Two heavily armed Handley-Page bombers have flown across the Channel to rendezvous with two flights of fighters and then bomb an enemy rail junction...

  3. Three Siemens Schuckerts waited to go into action.

  4. A powerful force of German fighters took to the air to intercept the British bombers.

  5. The bombers moved towards the escort fighters.

  6. The Camels dlew to intercept the Albatros D.V's but they were not quite in range.

  7. The fighters approached each other.

  8. The S.E.5a's flew to intercept the Fokker D.VII's.

  9. The Fokker E.V's slipped past the S.E.5a's, who were concentrating on the Fokker D.VII's.

  10. The Camels turned to meet the Albatros D.V's and a Fokker E.V head on.

  11. Meanwhile the three Siemens Schuckerts and one Albatros closed in on the first bomber.

  12. The bombers held their formation.

  13. One Albatros was hit and began to smoke.

  14. One Fokker D.VII was hit and began to smoke.

  15. A Siemens Schuckert and a bomber exchanged fire. One of the Handley-Page's rear gunners was wounded.

  16. The Albatros D.V's pressed on to attack the bombers. One Siemens Schuckert pursued the Camels.

  17. A Fokker E.V also pursued a Camel.

  18. The Fokker D.VII's slipped past the S.E.5a's.

  19. First blood to the British! The Handley-Page's front gunner hit the Siemens Schuckert and it blew up. Well might he wave his hand in the air.

  20. The Albatros D.V's attacked the second bomber.

  21. Two Camels turned to aid the bombers. The third Camel was shot down by the Fokker E.V.

  22. The S.E.5a's flew towards the target town.

  23. A Fokker family gathering?

  24. The Albatros D.V's and the Siemens had passed the bomber but a Fokker E.V moved in to attack. The Camels were coming to the rescue.

  25. The Siemens turned to get back intothe fray.

  26. The Fokker D.VII's headed for the bombers.

  27. The Fokker E.V attacked the bomber. the Siemens closed in. The Camels tried to intervene.

  28. The S.E.5a's were good at formation flying.

  29. One Fokker E.V went for the S.E.5a's whilst the Fokker D.VII's went for the bombers. In the exchange of fire with S.E.5a W the Fokker E.V was shot...

  30. A Fokker E.V went for the first bomber.

  31. The second Handley-Page came under heavy attack. Fortunately for the Germans, its guns jammed.

  32. The Albatros D.V's performed Immelmann turns.

  33. The Handley-Page's front gunner hit the Fokker E.V, which began to smoke. The Siemens shot at the Camel, which caught fire.

  34. Having shot down the Fokker E.V, the S.E.5a's tried to pursue the Fokker D.VII's.

  35. The Albatros D.V's headed towards the bombers. One exchanged fire with a Camel.

  36. The blue Siemens Schuckert put in a final burst of fire to finish off the Handley-Page. The smoking Fokker E.V was shot down by a bomber.

  37. One Handley-Page was shot down and removed from play.

  38. The Fokker D.Vii's headed for the last British bomber.

  39. The S.E.5a's were left behind.

  40. The Albatros D.V's continued flying back towards the battle but exposed their tails to the Camels.

  41. The Fokker D.VII's attacked the remaining Handley-Page and shot it down.

  42. The S.E.5a's were too far behind the Fokkers to help the bomber.

  43. The elated German pilots did not think about where they were flying.

  44. The Albatros D.V's headed back towards the battle. The Siemens just missed the blazing Camel.

  45. The Camels pursued the Albatros D.V's.

  46. One damaged S.E.5a headed for home. The others pursued the Fokkers.

  47. Were these Fokker D.VII's magnetic? They seemed to attract each other. Two collided and eliminated each other.

  48. The Camels attacked the Albatros D.V's. One Albatros was shot down.

  49. The leading S.E.5a scored a hit on the yellow Fokker D.VII, which started smoking. Another Albatros went down but the Siemens Schuckert was in...

  50. With the loss of the Camel both sides decided to return to their bases. The Germans to celebrate their costly victory and the British to mourn...

  51. In the second game the participants could fly whatever they desired. A Halberstadt, Fokker D.VII and a Ufag versus...

  52. one of Jabba's S.E.5a's and....

  53. a Bristol Fighter with two forward firing guns.

  54. The Halberstadt and Fokker D.VII engaged the S.E.5a.

  55. The Bristol Fighter and Ufag exchanged fire. As it turned out, both missed.

  87. The Ufag moves in to attack the S.E.5a. Subsequently the S.E.5a wounded the Ufag's observer and the game ended as it was time to pack away.
