Default New Caquot Balloon Image in photo album

    http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/album.php?albumid=19

Just added a great squadron photo of a German caquot balloon and its squadron taken in May 1918. What I am really intrigued by is the fabric pattern on what is the underside of the balloon in the photo, but I suspect is in fact the top and is a type of camo. Thoughts?

No I think its Right way Up!
The square patten is just the panels & maybe some have been replaced & that is why there seems to be different colours.
Congratulations on your Album. Some really great images there.
May I suggest you post a message referring members to your Album of Original WW1 Photos.

It's just interesting to me how the different colors and such do kinda resemble a series of fields...but you are probably right, just the way things look. Will post a note about the albums. Thanks Gully!

Having looked at your album Rod, I agree with Barry.
There are some fine pictures hiding in there.

Some really interesting photo`s there, particularly of the American balloons with roundels.
While its not that hard to find photos of German balloons with crosses painted on them, allied ones showing any markings are a bit rarer.
One of the US ones has a US star marking rather than a roundel, is this a post-war photo or maybe a balloon used for training in the US rather than on the western front?

Rabbit - I think it is post WWI but unfortunately there is no details on the card itself... what is interesting is this alleged WWI recruiting poster using that roundel

However, I don't believe it was used in Europe. So, I would say late 1918, probably in the USA - maybe a place like Lakehurst - and for training. But that is just an intuitive guess

My friend, Harry, in Germany sent this. Harry is one of the experts on Zeppelins and is equally fascinated by the observation balloons. This image is a great on from Luftschiffharry.

Thanks for the translation. I didn't get a chance to do that after posting it.

Folks - beyond my price guide, but friend Luftschiff Harry sent this link over to me...Look at the cratered surface where they are launching this one balloon from...my lord...we see this in the movies and such, but it is always chilling to see the actual photos and realized that Hollywood cannot truly depict this level of destruction in a few scenes.

Bit rich for me too Rod.
However, it will make some collector very happy to get their hands on those.
