Default Short Bomber: Adventures in painting

    Hi,

been away for a while, busy with work and painting the 3D printed Bomber. It's been an adventure alright, painting the thing...

As usual, first a light twin coat of diluted PVA, then a grey primer spray

It was fun painting, especially the wing leading edge, where two colours meet... took me a week!

Except for the roundels, I made my own decals and that was fun, too. The wheel hubs are transparent decals, the edges smoothly (well, more or less) painted over to blend with the tyre colour

The white lettering on the fuselage was printed on a green background and then painted over to better blend in. I first printed some 15 different shades of green to find the right one, then put on the letters.

    Lessons learned?

    1. transparent decals are, well, a special case. Bright decal over dark background? Forget it! I ruined some decal paper while trying to produce the lettering which would be visible on a transparent decal. It worked with wheel hubs because they are bright.

    2. white background decals: paint tends to crumble when you cut them. I had to give the rudder decals two coats of liquid decal film and still had a devil's time to make it right. More or less. In the end I painted the things over...

Wish you hadn't put that lettering on thought - My first short (sram) arrived in the mail today and the quality of your paint job puts sets one h#&l off standard to live up to...

Done a very good job there Jure. did you find the edges difficult because of the pitted surface or was it for some other reason?

Rob, it's my hands, LOL. Alright, I can now see perfectly with the 2.5x magnification glasses, but drawing a straight line on them thin leading edges is another matter altogether! I learned a trick painting the bomber's straight lines, though: paint should be somewhat diluted (lots of trial and error here), the brush should hold just the right amount of paint, hold the brush at an angle and then make a slow but decisive sweep along the edge, resting the lower part of the brush against the bottom part of the leading edge. Done correctly, the line will be surprisingly straight. Still, I must've corrected what my shaky fingers produced at least a dozen times.

The surface (of the WFS) is smooth enough after my two PVA coats. I often correct problematic (read: pitted) parts even after the second coat is applied, or use Vallejo putty to good effect. Especially on struts which tend to have a central pit running from top to bottom.

Dave, I mostly use Citadel paints, some being close to 20 years old, so I think I need to replace them soon, LOL. Especially reds and blues are getting funny as can be seen on the tail. I need to correct that. For the fuselage I mixed Vallejo green paint and Citadel brown. They mix pretty well, just be sure to stir well before using. I like Vallejo because it appears to have a somewhat stronger pigment and it's not as dense as my admittedly very old Citadels.

Citadel white primer spray is the usual primer while for the Bomber I tried Vallejo grey primer.

    Great work, Jure.

Like the model, the painting, the base, the pictues... everything.

    Just a few questions:

What type of bomber is it?

    An early one?

Seems to me it has only one rear gun. "A" or "B" firing?

    Thank you, Sven.

The Short Bomber first flew in 1915, I believe, and it was a long range reconnaissance and bombing aircraft. You are quite correct, it was armed with one rear firing "B" Lewis gun, so I wouldn't send it over the trenches unescorted. According to our Stats Team, it was used until the end of first quarter of 1917.

It's pretty big, larger than a two-engined Friedrichshafen G.III, for example. Quite a sight on the gaming table... I'm warming the engine of my Fokker D.II

Wiki summarises its operational status pretty well - though you should really go to primary sources.

The Short Bomber entered service in late 1916 with No. 7 Squadron RNAS, flying its first bombing raid on the night of 15 November 1916, with four Shorts, each carrying eight 65 lb (30 kg) bombs, attacking targets at Ostend in Belgium along with 18 Caudron G.4s.7 Squadron RNAS continued bombing operations through the winter of 1916-17, but the Short Bomber was underpowered and was taken out of service in April 1917, when more powerful aircraft (notably the twin-engined Handley Page Type O/100 entered service. One of its last combat operations involved attacking the Zeebrugge Mole on four successive nights in April 1917, in preparation for the naval raid on St. George's Day (23 April).
It started out as a land-based version of the very successful Short 184 floatplane, using the 2-bay Short 166's wings anf 184 fuselage. But it couldn't carry the specified bombload - so they extended the wings to 3 bays (as with the 184) and then some. That made it unstable, so they had to lengthen the fuselage, making it look anorexic.

    Long(production) Short Bomber

Intitially the gunner was at the front, standing to fire an over-wing mount to cover the forward arc (only). Production versions used a rear gunner.

Someone is bound to say it Zoe so it might as well be me.
You seem to have sorted out the long and the short of it very well.
    Thanks.

Thanks for that Jure - seems that your paintbox is at least as old as mine in places !! - I too use really old GW colours but will have to start refreshing with some Vallejo soon & maybe some more Humbrol Acrylics as they are releasing some old/new colours in that range this year.

    Thanks for the information.

That would be the perfect bomber for the WW I series V planes (Bullet, Eindecker, etc...)

`Fat` would probably apply to the AEG G.IV, `Ugly` well the jury is still out on that one.
I cant say any WWI bomber is any great shakes in the looks department.

If you`r looking for decals for the Short a company called Blue Rider does a nice Roundal sheet in 1/144 which also includes some manufacturers markings appropriate to the Short Bomber as well as others.
