Default Gratitude in a Thread with Three Posts

I've received a present today. I'm speechless. It's awesome. I'm just like a kid in Christmas Eve.
    How can one express gratitude?
I opened the box and one after the other after the other, each one more beautiful than the previous, let me with the face on an eight years boy.
And then the last mythological beast!! I could only sing "Uuchu Senkan Yamato" while I tested its flight around me in my shaking hands.
    Thank you so much!

So, how can we measure gratitude?

To do this I can only express it with "A Great Dogfight".

    Very soon.

    Question

So 'quim! Do not leave us all in the dark.

    WHAT DID YOU GET??????
Sounds like some WW2 Birds from your little song but then they could have been ships????

    Second Post of Three

Clipper sent me a giant. When I opened it I felt like:

I went back to when I was 11 years old and distant stars were my distance, space battles my path and a beautiful blue princess was waiting for me between the cold void of space and a Red Giant ready to die as a Supernova.

The giant filled my house with old dreams.

Dark old creatures made of fire and scales awoke from behind the furniture with an ancient desire.

I played with the ten-engined giant. Joachim came to measure its power. Stunned and bewildered.

He followed it into the dream. Azure, wind and chimes. The smelling of engine oil and nectar.

At last, F.O. Kyte arrived, called by the ancient sound of thunder and engines. Daring, he approached the behemoth, a stray of bullets proving his courage. But retreated in awe, taken away, as if a leaf it was...

Streams of time, undone imagination, leathery wings never before seen...

The box was there, coming from America, with other gifts and surprises...

But the rest will be disclosed in the third post.

    Third Post of Three

"I've been cursed with this golden voice
I've been cursed with the gift of poetry
I can see the melody in the middle of the noise
In the artery of life I can see the tapestry..."

    Miuq'oai Ordep

The open box filled with soft plastic and little bags filled with air. A womb. As I removed carefully the contents of the box, little wonders made by Clipper's hands appeared in the quiet afternoon of Portugal's uneasy Summer.

The first one to be drawn to the light was a strange geometrical beast. A beauty on it's own, different and proud.

The S.S.W. R 1. I never suspected that I would love this plane so much. He's ready to take off, I'll tell you.

Then a glimpse of red and white, small and cute. You cannot really understand David's craftsmanship by the pictures he show us here. You really must see the real thing. I observed every little detail in this plane. Mesmerized. The ancient Greeks used the expression Eídō kalos that means "Behold beauty", or more correctly "see and understand beauty". This is it.

A bird of water over an ocean. Can't really much wait to play with this plane.

But as I was opening the box, layer by layer, protected planes waiting for my eyes, I reached the one I told David that I loved. Before sending me the box, he told me that he had space in the box. he asked me if I had any request. I almost told him: "Yes. Get yourself and the Elves in the box, please. I need your help for the rest of your life. We have sun, we have peace in here and of course we have financial depression. But we would play a lot of games." I was wise. I just told him that I had loved his Capronis Ca 4. He sent me one.

Detail and craftsmanship. If Ares had Clipper working for them, they could have reached the moon. The Bewlay Brothers?!

And finally just before I've reached The Dreaming Dragon, I saw the object of the first building Thread I've read from Clipper's here at the Aerodrome. It was about this bomber. Before the Empire became a broken Utopia. Before the Imperial colours became Red as blood. My first four engined bomber for the Great War: Ilya Muromets bomber.

Now I need some Russian fighters to protect him against the Black Crosses In The Sky.

And at the end I've reached the King of Possible Oblivion That Never Was. A Dragon indeed. The initial reason to receive this prize. I'm a lucky man. And I'm a rich man. How does one measures his own fortune? By the numbers of digits of one's bank account? By the number of people who fears us? Or by the moments of happiness? By the moments that makes us understand that someone is thinking about us? Thinking about giving us bliss. That is richness. Good fortune. Therefore I'm a rich person.

Gratitude endures in me. I'm a grateful person. Not to an Unknown God, entity or institution. I'm grateful to other people. And I always felt the need to give and to give back, to ensure richness. But what will I make to offer Clipper's? How do we offer a painting to Leonard da Vinci without feeling a little shame? Well, I'll try and we'll see how it goes. After David receives it, I'll post here a step by step of how I've done "A Great Dogfight".

And finally I'll just say: Thank you Clipper - it's Christmas in Summer - as in reality it should be for me, for I was born in Summer but now my birthday is always in Winter.

They did. They do. Between the stones and hardships of the path, like Don Quixote said, dragons and fairies, damsels and joust, what more there is but dream and to dream a good dream?

I'm afraid Kyte never got any further with that type of thought than when his English Master made him read this poem.

Earth hath not anything to show more fair:
Dull would he be of soul who could pass by
A sight so touching in its majesty:
This City now doth, like a garment, wear
The beauty of the morning; silent, bare,
Ships, towers, domes, theatres and temples lie
    Open unto the fields, and to the sky;
All bright and glittering in the smokeless air.
Never did sun more beautifully steep
    In his first splendor, valley, rock, or hill;
Ne'er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep!
The river glideth at his own sweet will:
    Dear God! The very houses seem asleep;
And all that mighty heart is lying still!

That is what made him want to shoot down Gothas.

Kyte is a very practical man with next to no imagination you see. That is what makes him very good at what he does.

I love that quote of Cohen and I challenge you with one of Tom Waits:

"Well he once killed a man with a guitar string
He's been seen at the table with kings
Well he once saved a baby from drowning
There are those who say beneath his coat there are wings
    Some say they fear him
    Others admire him
    Because he steals his promise
    One look in his eye
    Everyone denies
    Ever having met him
    Ever having met him"

Tough one - I'll have to try countering with a complete John Foxx lyric:

    "He's an angle
    She's a tangent
There's some flowers on the bathroom floor
    He's a click track
    Now she makes a flashback
    He's a liquid
    He's a laugh
    She's a graph
He wears a sticky white shirt and tie
    In those viscose clothes
    His watch hand glows
    He's a liquid
    She's elusive
    He's adhesive
    He's a trickle down a falling wall
    They get married too much
    She's a soft touch
    He's a liquid
    He pulls
    She pushed
They read the Bible about the flood
    She draws the curtains
    'Cause now she's certain
    He's a liquid"

That's a hard one to counter. Let's try this one from Nick Cave - Are You The One That I've Been Waiting For?:

"Out of sorrow entire worlds have been built
Out of longing great wonders have been willed
They're only little tears, darling, let them spill
And lay your head upon my shoulder
Outside my window the world has gone to war
Are you the one that I've been waiting for?

O we will know, won't we?
The stars will explode in the sky
O but they don't, do they?
Stars have their moment and then they die

There's a man who spoke wonders though I've never met him
He said, "He who seeks finds and who knocks will be let in"
I think of you in motion and just how close you are getting
And how every little thing anticipates you
All down my veins my heart-strings call
Are you the one that I've been waiting for?"

Shouldn't exist a forward gun? It makes sense. What do you think?
The angles seem okay to me - we are here in the realms of "what if" so...
    What about hit points?
And the deck should be very restricted. There should exist 30ş turns.
Can you make a second card with a special pilot called David "Elf" Clipperbaumm. I would appreciate if you did it.

Arm it with whatever you want. From 'German Giants' (Haddow & Grosz, Putnam, 1988) - 'From the outset, the Poll Giant was intended as a long-range transport not bomber.' It was 'intended to fly to America and drop propaganda leaflets over the United States before that country enter (sic) the war.'

Not necessarily. I can't see any indication on the plan to suggest a forward firing gun (Not that that means anything). The other thread on this beastie was suggesting an XA deck.

Cards for Baron von Sillyname or whoever can wait until we've finalised the layouts.

That was a really heavy weight quote. Has some serious beauty to it. Hard to counter.
Don't want to play all my Cohen cards, so I'm going with David Sylvian here - Even though I have issues with him. This at least is from a collaboration with Mick Karn (sadly no longer with us).

    "There's something in the air
It's never felt like this before
    A turning of the tide
A slamming of the holy doors

I'll find myself a quiet place that no-one's ever seen
A blazing sun will shine upon the road ahead of me
    When love walks in

I see it in their eyes
The flames to burn the final straw
The heathen struck the match and lit the fire
A wish fulfilled and nothing more

I'll find myself a quiet place that no-one's ever been
A blazing sun will shine upon the road ahead of me
    When love walks in

Why take me now there's nothing more
Just hold me close and say goodbye
    There'll be tomorrow's given time
Just close your eyes and leave this all behind
    Then love walks in

    Like waves of golden sand
    Heavenly floating seas
    The power in her hands
    Brings mountains to their knees"

Well, in face of David Sylvian, and I'm at odds with him also, I'll be weak and retreat back to the Master. How can I not? "Take This Longing" from Cohen, who was terribly inspired when he wrote this down:

"Many men have loved the bells
    you fastened to the rein,
    and everyone who wanted you
they found what they will always want again.
Your beauty lost to you yourself
just as it was lost to them.
Oh take this longing from my tongue,
whatever useless things these hands have done.
Let me see your beauty broken down
like you would do for one you love.

    Your body like a searchlight
    my poverty revealed,
I would like to try your charity
until you cry, "Now you must try my greed."
    And everything depends upon
how near you sleep to me

Just take this longing from my tongue
all the lonely things my hands have done.
Let me see your beauty broken down
like you would do for one your love.

    Hungry as an archway
through which the troops have passed,
I stand in ruins behind you,
with your winter clothes, your broken sandal straps.
I love to see you naked over there
    especially from the back.

Oh take this longing from my tongue,
all the useless things my hands have done,
untie for me your hired blue gown,
like you would do for one that you love.

You're faithful to the better man,
    I'm afraid that he left.
So let me judge your love affair
in this very room where I have sentenced
    mine to death.
I'll even wear these old laurel leaves
that he's shaken from his head.

Just take this longing from my tongue,
all the useless things my hands have done,
let me see your beauty broken down,
like you would do for one you love.

Like you would do for one you love."

Lovely thread and I loved the poetry!

Unfortunately I did not get to read any of it until today. August 14 I suffered a stroke at the end of the work day and wound up in the hospital for the rest of the week, just got home today (8/18). No residual damage and I am being forced to spend a week off work . . . fate or coincidence or God (my preference), a box of Shapeways models arrived at my door when I was just coming home!!!! The elves no doubt had it all planned. So now I am doomed to a week or so of "limited" activity (painting for sure, a quick sneek out to the workshop when no one is looking).

One can never over estimate the power of friendship and the deeper joy it brings to life. Enjoy your new toys and remember my joy was in the giving, keep climbing, we never know how much sky is left above!

Thanks to all my Wings friends!

Clipper napping for a while, let the elves elve on!

Alice's here, my friend. Now rest, watch TV (historical series and that), do not make efforts or do things that stress you. We, the Aerodrome Committee for Clipper's Health voted and you can make ONE plane per day, no more. Understood?

    Good initiative!
I think this thread is way past the "drifting" stage (and yes, I know that I'm partly to blame for that). But, that's what makes many of Joaquim's threads so interesting - They're so eclectic, almost like living things.

    Thanks, Niclas.
I do think that almost all purisms tend to fixed ideas and thoughts and that makes things, ideas and games poorer.
I typically don't mind that a thread drifts to other issues, if the issues are interesting and rich.
I've always been accused of being a little eclectic. As a teacher I try always to find the best and most interesting ways to help students to learn. I've been known to take a big tour from point A to B, just to make it more interesting and richer.
