    Category:
    Fiction
    Format:
    Hardback
    Summary:
The 3-issue graphic novel miniseries originally titled Le Grand Duc from the pen of writer Yann and artist Romain Hugault. The series begins in 1943 Russia, during the height of the last great German counterattack, focusing on the aerial confrontations between the German Luftwaffe and the Russian air force.
The series follows two pilots; the german Oberleutnant Wulf and the russian Lilya. Their lives come together several times and a romance unfolds.

Book 1: Witches of the Night
    Book 2: Comrade Lilya
    Book 3: Wulf & Lilya

The series has also been translated into Dutch and is called "Nachtuil"

Nice love story made great and brought to life by the outstanding and gorgeous artwork by Hugault who is an avid aviation designer enthusiast. Hugault's passion shows in the astonishing, intricate detail of the combat aircraft. Even if you're not enthusiastic about the story the drawings make this graphic more than worth while for everyone who is cray about aircraft.

A scanlation (scan + translation) is available in English of this series on the internet. I assume that this is however without the permission of the author so is in fact illegal.

Obviously some 'artistic license' taken, particularly with the cover art: if it starts in 1943, there's some real sorcery going on with the He219 as most of them were based with I/NJG 1 in the Netherlands (Book 1). Nicely drawn work though!

Good point there but the series start in 1943 in the first book but ends in 1945 with the third book. You start with the germans beeing superiour in the air but during the story the roles are changed.

Edit: rephrased that bit to avoid misunderstandings.

Thanks for the review. I still wish there was an official English version Something that looks this good art wise I'd want to have in a nice printed edition.

Did you check Amazon, Keith? Looks like all three chapters are in this hardcover book.

He also has a series of 2 books which is called "above the clouds" or "Über den wolken". Again nice drawings of aircraft and women, but less about WWII. Still worth the buy to my opinion. "Final flight" is just one book and is a collection of short storys about the final flight of some pilots. Story wise not so interesting but again picture-wise excellent quality!
