Thread: Over the Trenches Officer's Mess

You must be a mind reader Andrzej - I was actually going to do just that; an uber Death Flies High I was going to call "The Circus comes to Town" or similar, play it for fun & post it for your delectation - so I'm in
Will have to clear a mountain peak in Afghanistan of opposition first though so will be a while before I can kick off

If you want to kick off again Paul fill yer boots but you may like to advertise it on the main forum to see what the pick up is likely to be & start a 2013 recruiting thread here maybe? We can add sheets to the Squadron pages for all the Campaigns to manage the pilots etc.

If we just leave 2 missions apiece, Sven's 16th would be the last one. Correct me if I'm wrong, please.
To be honest I don't want to stop Over the Trenches before mission 16.

I'm curious what Paul and Rob would desing as their next/final missions. I plan a bomer escort/intercept as mission number 16. (...and I don't want to fight Caproni Ca.3 bombers with Eindeckers and Halberstadts.)

So if we close the "mid-war" Over the Trenches campaign with a last stand mission as number 17 it would be fine for me.

    Additional:

Do we already know how the rules for a new early-war campaign looks like?

As simple as the Midway Rising Campaign?

Maybe we should open a thread her to discuss this.

    ...another problem:

Our chief campaign designer (Blackronin) is absent at the moment.

Another small problem in comparison to the absence of our Guru, is the lack of a solo AI T deck chart for the Eindeckers.

I believe for my last sortie I used the G deck advanced chart by Blackronin for my T deck planes. I think the only difference is that the sideslips aren't counted as steep maneuvers. It seemed to work well.

Thanks Shawn, that might be the answer to the problem. I will give it a try out.

    That's fine.

    I'll PM Tikkifriend/Paul.

Think I'll open a Early War campaign thread here the next days, to collect ideas what elements we want to use or not.

Ok, chaps, let's go on with the missions.

Just a short note - I have finally managed to complete and post the AAR of my 13th mission. It took some time, but I'm before the deadline

I have rationalized the casualties on the squadron boards in order to make them easier to read by putting the casualties at the bottom of our own flight sections of the board. I have also added skeleton Early OTT boards too. If you wish to suggest any changes to the layout this is the time to do so; I would suggest getting rid of the aircraft preference & type columns myself as they may be redundant now?
Anyway - have a look & let me know what your thoughts are.
I have also expanded the Reservestaffel with some names that may look familiar from a certain film ...

    Looks good, Dave!

Depending on the rules for the Early War OTT campaign maybe every player organizes his pilots in a personal thread.

But it would be fine if we can keep an overview and collect the complete data with your board.

Happy to do it if the chaps want it but they can maintain there own on there if they prefer - did you see the expanded Reservestaffel Pilots I've added ?! I will carry them straight into the early campaign to make life easier if there are no objections.

Saw them Flash - good names.

They fit perfectly into WW I.

I'll come back on your naming abilities for an Entente Reserve Squadron. I'll change sides for the Early War Campaign.

They are pilot names from the Blue Max - although I only had surnames in most cases so used the actors first name or made one up. I even used actors names, Otto Volger played Heidemann & Carl Schell played MvR in the film !
I will use Aces High names as inspiration for the Entente chaps

Done ! Entente Squadron pilots are listed on the Eaglets page for ease of use, likewise the Reservestaffel are on the Bullpups page. The entente have been created as flights of four with two Sgt Observers for the 2 seater missions. I was thinking that a player can nominate which flight he will take on or it can be randomly determined. We can thrash the detail out when we get closer to launch.

Just had a day of gaming - revisited the idea of 'The circus Comes to Town' by having 11, yes eleven, German Scouts versus 10, yep ten, allied kites.. mad isn't it ? The aircraft were 1 Spad XIII, 2 SE5a, 1 Dolphin, 3 Camel, a N.17 and 2 Bristol F2B against 4 Albatros D.Va, 1 Albatros D.III, 3 Pfalz D.III, 3 Dr1. I controlled one - the Dolphin - all the others were AI controlled using the basic Bradley rules. I was into turn three when my son appeared at the door and said "You're mad!" He watched for a few minutes and then said "Can I help out?!"
We got seven or eight turns in, my kite was shot down on a boom card; 4 other Brits went down too - SE5a to collision before it fired a round, both F2B to boom cards, N.17 shot down. The Germans lost 4 for similar reasons & the rest were so beaten up they had to break off.
I don't recommend it as it takes soo long (about half hour a move) but it is quite an interesting exercise and the turns get shorter as you thin the herd !

Thought you were Psychic then Rob - been suffering with a dodgy back the last couple of weeks !!
To alleviate the problem my gaming table is on height adjustable trestles (My table has altitude !) so I can put it to a level where no bending is required as there would normally be for a dining table or similar. Been using this system for years & it has really helped.
I rounded off the marathon gaming day with a brisk 3 hour WW2 company action with my wingman v.Schmallhausen (Col Frank Gerome Smallhouse III US army on this occasion) - happy daze !

To be serious, it seems like a very good idea. Would you be prepared to explain how you have achieved this Dave?

Many years ago I was dragged to IKEA by snr management to checkout something or other & I found a set of trestles, metal construction, lightweight, with plastic feet but the best bit was you could select the height you wanted & secure with a hand screw (I think the idea was you could buy a table top to to screw them to but none were 6x4 !). As I have always had a dodgy back I thought they would be useful. It takes seconds to set them up & I just put my table surface on top, I can even set it up over the dining table or a bed which then provide useful storage areas. I tend to have it at a low chest height but it will go up as high as my armpit if I want it to. Sadly they stopped doing them or I would have got another pair for a bigger table in the garage !

My co-gamers have the bad habit to lay both ellbows with their weight on the table while gaming.

This could be a rough mission end wit such a table...

It's surprisingly stable actually - I frequently lean on it but try not to make a (bad) habit of it !

A very smart table there, Dave. I devised a slightly different solution. Having a quite large table upstairs at my HQ I decided to make it even larger. Came to a hobby store and ordered a cut of two rectangular pieces kind of plywood (or something like that), flat and strong. I placed them upon the existing table and covered with official Citadel Battle Mat (grass like). Now it's a very large area for WoG and other boardgames I play.

Thank you for showing us your table set up Dave. It is not quite what I had envisaged, and is even better than I had supposed.
I am now wondering if I have enough steel tube in stock to produce something similar? When the new mats arrive I'm going to need to extend my table slightly to incoorperate it, so it would also be a good time to experiment with some new legs.

    Yes Dave.
Although I might make it with square tube. Its many years since I worked out a template for interpenetration of two different diameter tubes.

Just for kicks I decided to add a Kills column to the spreadsheet to total up the individual characters victories - I will let you work out your flights totals but here are some figures to whet your appetite: Ginger Hawkwood & Joachim Marseille lead with 11 apiece but it must be said that young Marseille is four scenarios behind at the moment. Robs flight leads with 30 followed by Svens men with 23 though it is notable that Jan had 17 by Mission 7 when he pulled out !

    Good day all!

Exchanged pms with Nightbomber about joining the campaign... He suggested that -- as the late war campaign is coming to a close -- I ought to stop by here, introduce myself, and sign on for the impending early war campaign.

    So... hello!

    Hi Chris.

I think it's the best you take your planes, fly the actual mission (15) and post it in the WW I AAR thread section. Attention: Deadline is the end of January.

Feel free to post us the link here at the Over the Trenches Officer's Mess.

    Should be possible.

    Which side do you prefer?

  40. #240

    Default

No preference, really... I've got my favorites for both the Central Powers and the Entente. I have an affinity for the dodgy-types, however, moreso than for those of the boom-and-zoom variety.

As for jumping right in to the late war campaign? I'm game... should I just grab a couple of the reserve pilots, or should I offer up a couple nuggets?

    Thanks!

  41. #241

Choose your side - name a few pilots and take off.

Think it's no problem to integrate 5 new pilots to the Eagles roster or the Bulldogs roster.

So you can fly the last mid-war-campaign with us and participate with the new start of the early one.

We gained and lost pilots during the Over-The-Trenches Campaign.

Hi Chris, you can start with 15th of course
As to the early war campaign Sven - I too reserve a Jasta for my enlistment in 1916

Would it be a bad idea to run the early war campaign exactly here in this Over the Trenches forum?

We could transfer the "mid war headline threads" back and get new ones.

I don't think we need a new subsection. I like this place.

    What do you think?

Found this picture of a K&K officers mess in the internet. Look at the funny enemy heads they painted on the wall.

...I found Watchdog, too. Have a look at the third guy from the left.

Jan, I think you have to give us a statement about this...

Due to the fact I am low ie non existant in early birds I am happy to continue and manage the OTT scenarios intil the end of the War.

We could run a separate thread for the" Early years" so as not to mix the 2 up. Seems a shame to let the legacy of Quim fall by the wayside and I am sure there are enough pilots out there to accomadate both sets of Scenarios.

I'm celebrating adding another Gotha to my wing - didn't mean to - just saw it at a show (Cavalier) for £20 & thought - that'll do ! Also met up with Brian (Archidamus) for a chat again which was brilliant too. 'Twas a good day
