Thread: Squadron sizes and mixed plane type squadrons.

Default Squadron sizes and mixed plane type squadrons.

Being still very new to the game, I was thinking of having for fighters/2-seaters squadrons, 3 - 4 planes each. Bombers,2 w/ escorts. And what about having a squad. w/ mixed planes, say 2 types?
So, what size are your squadrons? How many planes do you control in a game? And, has anyone gamed w/ a Zeppelin? [of coarse one of Clippers Beauties] for which I WILL own one, some day. Would love to hear some examples.

There are plenty examples of squadrons operating with two or more aircraft types; it all depends of how historically accurate you want to be.

For British (RFC/RNAS/RAF) aircraft I find this is a good resource to see which squadrons flew what and when:

    http://www.rafweb.org/Menu.htm

Numbers-wise I like to fly up to three at a time, any more and the game tends to slow down and/or become confusing, especially when the fur starts to fly.

I have my particular favourites (Dr1, DVa or Ufag C1) and fly those together, even when the opposition tends to wheel out 'better' aircraft. There is something satisfying about bringing down a more capable fighter...

I imagine that most squadrons used the same aircraft or if they did fly more than one type, Squadron Commanders assigned same type aircraft to each flight and mission.
Primary reason being the same type aircraft would have the same cruising speed. Pilots did not encounter enemy aircraft on every mission, so the entire mission would amount to nothing more than flying around in formation.
In such a case, everyone having the same cruising speed makes things alot easier.

As far as the game goes, I would say that an experienced player can handle two aircraft easily. Any more than that slows things down.
Also, the more aircraft you have in the game means that each movement phase takes more time.

except that if you fly in formation you can control the whole squad with one movement card, move the squad leader and then just form up the rest with out needing to measure or place cards. only gets involved when you break formation...lol

    My .02 cents!

I do believe that most fighter Sqns and Jastas tended to operate with just one or two different types, except for a sqn hack.
The Jastas may have had upto three different types as they were swoping over to DVII or evaluating a new type, Phalz XII and SS.
But that is just my interpretation I glady accept more information.
Max we play with is two per player, have tried with more but for me it soon gets confusing with more, I plead senility

    Not you as well Chris.

I find the RFC. aircraft confusing enough. All the same colour in the main. That's why I added the little dots to each planes cards and bases. It helps no end. I agree with you on the types flying together, but that is of no consolation if two or more Jastas are involved. I'm just glad it's a German problem.
I can just about manage 'Biffs' Se5s and Camels in the air together.
    I blame those aluminium pans.

We've played up to 4 planes per player. Mostly it's usually one or two per player.
