Thread: UNOFFICIAL AIRPLANE : SCHRECH FBA type H

  1. #1

Default UNOFFICIAL AIRPLANE : SCHRECH FBA type H

The Belgian army had to defend its coastal waters ( what was left of it anyway) against submarines... To that end they used the SCHRECK FBA type H.

There is still an original aircraft left at the Brussels museum and in february 2002 I took some pictures of it. I had to scan the pictures as they were taken with an analog camera ( I should visit again to go digital some day )

    General characteristics
Crew: Three, pilot and two observers/gunners
    Length: 9.92 m (32 ft 7 in)
    Wingspan: 14.72 m (48 ft 4 in)
    Height: 3.10 m (10 ft 2 in)
    Wing area: 40.0 m2 (430 ft2)
Empty weight: 984 kg (2,170 lb)
Gross weight: 1,420 kg (3,130 lb)
    Powerplant: 1 × Hispano-Suiza 8Aa, 112 kW (150 hp)
    Performance
    Maximum speed: 150 km/h (90 mph)
    Range: 450 km (280 miles)
    Armament
1 × .303 Lewis gun fixed to fuselage, or mounted on post in observer's cockpit
200 kg (440 lb) of bombs

the rest of the pictures can be seen in my album :

It would be nice to have a card and some stats of this little flying boat ...

Never mind a card and stats Alex. With a few more dimensions we could build it.

Judging by the decals that are shown they took the aircraft in Brussels as an example ( number 5 on the rudder cfr my album )I think that building the hull and wings must be feasable but that engine looks really complicated...
I've ordered the windsock datasheet and supposedly there are some drawings in there ...
    I'll keep you posted

At some point, I'm sure, clipper1801 will build a few. He likes building 'odd', or better, 'cool' looking planes.

" but that engine looks really complicated..."
Probably need better photos of the engine to ensure we get the carburetion system, electricial wiring, exhaust pipes and water hoses right.
Or we could pretend that all current photos were taken when the aircraft was being worked on and they had splash guards covering the engine when it was in flight.
    Anything for an easy life.

That's a nice addition to the collection of info on this machine so far Linz. Now all we need are some engine dimensions.

Haven't seen that one before, but in NZ I did see some thing quite similar. Many countries had a variation on this theme, here's the one(s) I'm working on, the Lohner L.

Here are the dimensions for the engine
    Comparative table

    Stroke (mm) 130 150
    Displacement (l) 11.76 11.76 18.47
    Compression ratio 4.7 5.3
    Length (m) 1.19 1.25 1.31 1.36 1.32
    Width (m) 0.81 0.83 0.85 0.86 0.89
    Height (m) 0.77 0.81 0.87 0.90 0.88
    Weight(kg) 195 215 230 236 256
    Power output (hp) 140 150 180 200/235 300

From these we should be able to work out the rest.

Strange how one aircraft can lead to an other ...I really should go back to the museum and take some pictures of that engine... All I have to do is find the time ...

meanwhile i found this on the internet...thisguy took some clear pictures of the engine:

I'm actually doing a card for one at the moment, I can arrange one for whatever scheme you want.

Who was that masked man? That was the Lohner Ranger!

Time to hijack my thread back ...

Today I found the Windsock datafile of the Schreck FBA type H in the mailbox and guess what ... There are nice drawings in it both in 1/72 and 1/48 scale

Stats look reasonable. Do you think these will do for a Lohner L?

Wonderful pic and cards. I have a real soft spot for flying boats. I'd really like to fly in one of those things, though I'm sure take-offs and landings would be ridiculously rough.

    Max, those cards are awesome!

    Default Not quite a Schrech......

But an FBA Type H (subject to everyone agreeing the stats for it).

I've done 3 nationalities, each with and without bombs in my card album.

Looks good to me Gunners, but what the other chaps think is the important factor. That album of yours is certainly starting to look impressive.

    Back after a long absence...

I never came to scratch building a Schreck FBA but did find one on Shapeways
As a (re)starting project I am planning to use it in one of our clubs coming games. So aside from painting it and putting some nice Belgian roundels on it i need to know what manoeuver cards to use.
    hence this thread-bump...Any idea's ?

I was busy cobbling together something for you when I found this in the stats doc Alex...!
    FBA H: Great Britain; Period 16 Q1 - 18 Q4; G* Deck; B/- Guns; 14 Health; 11 Alt; 6 Climb.
G* deck is the G deck with Immelman removed

Came out slightly better than I was getting to !

    Hi Alex,
If you need a base for it the 'Gunbus' base that the Oberst does is what I use for my Type H

There are plenty of pictures of the Schrech FBA type H available if you perform a Google search. Several pictures show the aeroplane carrying bombs.

The Wikipedia article states that there was a version which carried a 37mm cannon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FBA_Type_H
