Thread: Gotha G.I

  1. #1

    Default Gotha G.I

    I'm trying to work up the stats for a Gotha G.I bomber, but details on performance are a bit sparse. I've got:

    Max speed 130 km/h
    climb 47 mins to 2000 m
    Upper span 20.3m
    Lower span 19.7m
    Length 12m
    Loaded weight 2966 kg

    Anybody got anything different for it?

    Steve, I'll check my new reference book when I get home this morning.

  3. #3

    Default

    I have 130km/h
    Climb to 800m in 9 minutes.
    Climb to 2,7km in 35 minutes

    Celing = 2750m
    Range = 540km

    Wingspan = 22m
    Length = 12,9m
    Heigth = 4m

    Empty weight = 1800kg
    Flight weight = 2800kg

    2 x Benz BzIII engines with 150hp each.

    Bomb load = 200kg
    Armamend = 1-2 7,9mm MGs

    I have been thinking about scratch building one of these but could not find any plans.
    My thoughts on wow/g stats would be
    Movement XA
    Guns B
    Damage bombers go from 22 to 30 I would go for 24 early aircraft
    Ceiling 8
    Climb Rate 8
    Crew 3
    Engines 2
    What do you guys think.

    Thanks Daniel and Michael for filling out the stats.

    @Linz, thanks for working out the WoW stats. Have to admit I've had a busy week one way and another so didn't actually get round to getting busy with pencil and paper.

    Can't see anything majorly wrong with these, so I'm happy to go with them. There's a behind the bar for you.

    Greetings guys! I am currently doing a build of five on the G1 based on some research I have, should have pics and progress on them by next week, after the Staakens they are so small!

    Stats work for me.
    You could argue for either/or the climb and ceiling to be 7 rather than 8 what with the uncertainty about the stats but an 8 for both seems to work.

    HMMM... I believe that there may be a resin SRAM model out there but that paper one rescaled to 1/144 looks like a much cheaper option.
    But then, consider who`s originally made this model, can we expect him to do a Shapeways one!

    Yes I picked it up a while back, makes a nice model too. Shrink it 50% and you are set : )
    There is also a nice top, front, and side view drawing from Europe on Google images under Gotha G1 with lots of construction detail. I'll post the link when I get back to my computer. Mean while my build begins tonight!

    Take some pictures of the build, especially the hard parts.

    Steve:
    I think that the front gun arc should be like a reversed Roland, 360 except for the tail blindspot. German Aircraft of the First World War says he had "Unparalleled field of fire. Looking at the pics, it does look it.

    Or, in other words "as many as the Germans built"

    What are the fuselages made from? (and impressive effort by the way).

    Doing the "fiddly" bits now. Yes, I am crazy, but no one is stopping me : )
    My records agree, around 20 or so is all. The wings are mini-blind plastic, struts .030" styrene, tail .020" styrene, fuselage is two parts, upper 3/32" and lower 3/16" bass wood. Upper wing is sandwiched between the two. Now for engines, landing gear and wheels! Should have a roll out with decals by Wednesday! Then I have a cool three way tie for the next build, Ilya Muromez V, Lohner L, and the Hansa Brandenberg 29. So many planes, so little sleep! But what else would I do?

    Thanks for the cool card by the way!

    Keep'n the insanity going! Dave

    Step-away-from-the-modelling-knife! I said, STEP-AWAY-FROM-THE-MODELLING-KNIFE-NOW!

    Like the idea of using mini-blinds for the wings though. Presumably these are rigid enough or you wouldn't be using them.

    That's a possibility, although I am not certain what arc for the gunner in the middle would look like. He has a gunner in front and a pilot behind to think about while he is blasting away.

    Just got home from another trip to the mega lumber mart with a package of vertical blinds . . . these will be wide enough for the wings on my Iliya Maromets! The mini blinds are perfect for minis, just the right weight and arc for the airfoils, saves a lot of time instead of shaping by hand.

    Yes, the x-acto knife is still in hand, now back to the Gotha landing gear, 48 tires! Crazy? No, I prefer the word "peculiar" - this week at least.

    BOTH gunners are in front of the pilot????
    OK, That needs some thought.
    Um, how about normal 2 seater blindspots front and back for the middle gunner.
    (God....this is a strange plane! I might need to build one.)

    4 wheels per Gotha, 6 Gothas equals 24 tyres. Am I missing something here?

    Should have my SRAM Gotha ready for action by the weekend too - just need to print some decals for the serial number and slap them on.

    Somewhat embarassed by the fact you have knocked up six in such a short time (and from scratch!) and it's taken me two months to get my a**e in gear to do one

    Oh thanks! 24 does not = 48 - must be the building fatigue factor. Now I have enough wheels for my next build.

    Ok guys! I have my fleet ready to fly, what's the final on the gun arcs? I know I would not want to be the pilot or either of the gunners-friendly fire at its worst!

    God, don't you sleep. You're as bad as Kyte!!
    I would go with a 360 minus the 2-seater blindspot for the front gunner, and the same but add a blindspot in front for the middle gunner.
    And yes, I wouldn't want to fly in this thing either.
