Thread: Series 2 Reprint replacements: Sopwith Snipe

  1. #1

Default Series 2 Reprint replacements: Sopwith Snipe

Andrea has been hinting that the up coming reprints may contain new paint jobs for a few of the planes. This is supposedly based on how well the original paint job sold.

With all of that, which of these would you like to see replaced with a new paint job?

    1. Barker

    2. Baker

    3. Ryrie

To be honest any would be fine, but with Ryrie and Baker being nigh-on identical one of those two (probably Ryrie as the lesser-known) would be the obvious move.

I'll go with Dom on this one.

Main thing would be to have one of the Australian Snipes replaced with one from another Squadron & hopefully with some distinctive markings!

Lose the Baker or the Ryrie... but make sure I have a Ryrie first?

I think it would be easier to paint over the number and apply another one, rather than painting over all those stripes.

Not sure how much choice there is with Snipes as I understand they were being introduced into frontline service from October 1918.

The first production Snipes were deployed with 43 squadron in September 1918, they began receiving their Snipes in August. An even shorter operational life than the Fokker D.VIII.

The problem is that apart from Barker's 'one-off' E8102 attached to 201 Sqn RAF, according to Bruce and Rogers the only sqns confirmed using Snipes on ops before the Armistice are 43 Sqn RAF and 4 Sqn AFC. At least one of the 43 Sqn Snipes (E8015 'E') had the sqn markings repeated on the top wing, but other than than the options seem to be limited to PC10/Battleship Grey, unless you go for training machines.

Yes no silly camo schemes and suchlike on Snipes, but the 43 squadron ones at least have somewhat more interesting markings than 4th AFC.

Most of the decals on the Snipe and Camel can be "scraped" off carefully with a nail(finger) or a sclpal. I have done so on the Barker camels and snipe I repainted /re-Decaled

I just got all three snipes in the mail this morning and my first impressions were that they were all a bit too similar. I do like they look of them though so I would say none unless there were some notably different paint schemes out there.

I don't care, as long as the Commie Snipes don't show up as replacements. :P

Baker. I like Barker's stripes, and the 8 on Ryrie's fuelselage is one of my 3 favorite numbers.

The Snipe really wasn't a very colorful plane series.

I'm not voting in this poll, as I'd rather they not issue any more Snipes. I'd be happier if they skipped this plane in the series, or at least reduced the number to only 1 or 2, and filled its spots with additional repaints of camels, SPADS, Albatroses, and Fokkers.

REAL Not Happy with the expansion of WGF to include Damn Dirty Stinking Commie Bastards... the ONLY reason I'm buying Sapozhnikov is for collection completion. (Ditto Kazakov, but he was one of the Good Guys at least.)

And yet you'll have some other ideologically (on in any other way) coloured airplanes? This is war game, and it reflects historical periods and it's wars. We are not here to favourize ideologies, but to play the game. And, even if you dislike any ideology, you don't have to insult it. It simply it's not the way this forum works.

I am not happy with Ares policy and this Snipe scheme either, Diamondback, my friend, and I share your feelings toward that ideology fully and completely. There is one pro argument however Let's recreate 1920 scenarios (like Polish-Soviet war of 1920 in which many American pilots volunteered) and this bloody Snipe will fit exactly playing the bad guys Check my album and you will see I have some of them

Just for the sake of harmony on the site and because I believe Diamond backs remarks were said tongue in cheek, let us move on please chaps. This poll is too good for me to have to use the heavy hand of censure upon it.

For The Record: the Russian Civil War, while tied to WWI, is a separate conflict--if Ares was going to do it they should have done it as a separate set, not slipstreamed in with the WWI line.

Also, tell you what... YOU try having a close friend (i.e., "practically family" close) with a KGB death-mark on their head sometime. Bet that would make your worldview a lot closer to mine...

Not trying to call you out, amigo, just to point out that there are good reasons why this particular grudge-match runs as deep as it does.

Well, separate lines are good argument. Ideology and other personal reasons aren't. And, just for clarity, I'm not communist myself. So, don't forget my country was bombed by NATO 15 years ago and I don't bear any grudge to American or some other people.

Wow, Hope you don't play WWII, unless you are 'on board' with nazi ideology or Stalinist (as opposed to anti-Tsarist/Leninist revolutionary of 1919 - big difference there <hint: one of those time periods had the KGB and one does not>)

Weird to go on a wargamer board and have people complain about mere existance of Soviet models.

So it's not just Soviet Russians you object to, but have an aesthetic distaste for Russians in general? Or just post-1918 models? How about 1919 era RAF Camels fighting the Russians in the Civil War, or the Turks in the War of Independence? The Polish(French) Br14 from the original card set, or the Hungarian D.VII ditto?

WGF has always had an extended version of WWI, not just limited to the Western Front section that ended on 11/11/18. Just as WGS has included pre-1939 conflicts in Spain and China.

It's perfectly reasonable to have aesthetic objections to either, just a matter of taste.

As for Kazakov - it was when he realised that he wasn't fighting for the Good Guys that he exited. The Good Guys weren't that good, the Bad Guys mixed at first, before descending into the Abyss. Take consolation that many of the best pilots who fought for the Reds were later executed by the more politically reliable.
