    Hello all,
I am relatively new to Wings of Glory, but I hope I can make next month's dogfight. I work in Suitland, so the drive from either work or home in Alexandria wouldn't be too bad on a Monday afternoon.

I wanted to invite all of you in the Metro DC area to the League of WWI Aviation Historians Mid Atlantic Chapter meeting at the National Air and Space Museum this Sunday. Feel free to contact me for more info:

“Capitaine Maurice Happe and Escadrille MF29”
The talk is a snapshot of one French bombing escadrille in late 1915 with a particular focus on some little-understood areas of squadron life – leadership styles, the use of intelligence, 1915 communications, the practice of martial skills and the role of experimentation in early French bombing units.

3:15PM - 4:00PM – In NASM Briefing Room: Presentation by Drs. William and Sharon Stine, Historians and Authors
“France on Fragile Wings, the story of Harold Stine”
An up front and personal look into the story of Harold Stine who never traveled far from his home in Charleston, West Virginia, a place of forested mountains, deep valleys and muddy, lethargic rivers. Friends and family, church and school were the secure web that encased his life. And yet he left this life to fly in France as a reconnaissance pilot in The Great War. His two years in France were the singular sojourn of his life, catapulting him from comfort into chaos. To better understand his father’s odyssey (based on pilot’s log, diary and a box of some 300 photographs and postcards), William Stine and his wife, Sharon, (both are PhD faculty emeriti from Cal Poly University) retraced his journeys in France. They found Harold’s flying fields, located towns where he was stationed, matched his photographs and postcards with the scenes that unfolded before them and used his photographs to engage local people. www.FranceOnFragileWings.com

I've been to a meeting at Udvar-Hazy. It was fun. I need to attend more.

Hope to see you at the next Monday night game!

  3. #903

One week warning as of Yesterday. Any suggestions on a scenario? I believe we did a standard balloon busting mission last month.

Also, I think I now have standing plans to eat at The Factory Grill before game, in case anyone feels like joining me.

  4. #904

How about the Lafayette Escadrille with A firing Nieuport 17's vs Dr 1s for the dog fight?

Todd - I think you have a nice set of repaints for this.

We could also try the "looking down" mission from flight of the giants. that's the one were instead of bombing the bomber has to circle on the enemy side of the map a set number turns artlilley spotting.

  5. #905

    Default

Both of those missions sound great!

I hope to be there today, around 6:15 or so.

Sorry guys, have to skip out tonight. Ryan and I were in Ocean City for the weekend playing soccer and we're beat! We'll see you next month.

  7. #907

Sorry, I couldn't make it. Hopefully I'll be there next time, so maybe even next week for Sails of Glory.

No worries, we still had a pretty strong turnout of 7 players for a late war dogfight and an "artillery spotting" scenario, against SPA78, the Pantheres Noir. Of course no photos were taken.

Hope everyone can make it for next month's game, Monday, July 14th, @ 6:00.

FYI, I don't think either myself or the regular with all the ships will be at the next 2 Sails of Glory nights, so if you have to make special arrangements, I'd wait a month. I'm sure Steve will still be up for a game if you've got nothing else going on though...

    One week warning (yesterday)!

Someone expressed interest in seeing what the Ares bombers were like, so unless someone's dying to do somethig different, we'll do a bombing run with Capronis or Gothas this month.

Maybe we'll get lucky and a Staaken (or unlucky depending what side you are on) will show up.

I may not be able to show up--work--but if anyone wants to come by my house and pick up the Stakken and the Handleys (maybe PRS?), that would be fine.

Last session was our leanest in a while, taking a late showing from tusekine to bring us up to 4. Hopefully we'll have a better turnout next time, which I believe is in 1 week!

    Monday, August 11th @ 6:00

    Scenario suggestions?

For the opening dogfight wouldn't mind seeing some early crates in the air

Well, our Friday night roleplaying game has been clicking along quite well. We finished up our Fate "Two-Fisted Pilot Tales" game, and followed that up with a short GURPS Infinite Worlds adventure (the PC's parachronic conveyer crashed, stranding them on a couple parallel universe versions of Treasure Island - one with Captain Nemo, one where the pirates hadn't quite buried the treasure, and a modern one with a zombie outbreak). Since July, I've been running lots and lots of D&D5, first with the wife and kids, and now with the Friday night group. But in all that time, I have played no WoW/G (having played some Star Trek Attack Wing instead), and have missed the last three or four outings at the game store. So, I'm overdue.

I can't even think of the last time I touched a brush to a plane.

    So, 1 week now...

Did we want to do early planes "again" for the first dogfight, since no one could make it out last week?

Is Tusekine going to be able to make it this week with hs big bombers for the later games?

    Any other ideas?

Yes, fully intend to be there, and will bring the big bombers (including the HPs). If the chips fall right, I may also have a "BIG" bomber for the early (British) planes...it was mailed Saturday, so if the post office can deliver it before Monday, you guys will be in for a surprise.

Yes, I am curious to see how that will work. Definitely will need pseudotheist's big map! I guess BE2s (a, b or c) and Avro504 could be opponents. Not sure what other planes--Fees, or Pups? 1 1/2 strutters?

I suggest you pace yourself with the exciting new toys. Bring one of them this month, and next month we'll still have something exciting to look forward to. And you won't have to cart it all...

So I'm no one? Gee, thanks...

I may not make it this time. I have a funeral earlier in the day so I may not be able to, depending on time. If you need another Be2c, I can give mine to John on Friday, so it will be there even I am not.

LZ 42 arrived yesterday! Let me know if you prefer that, the Short bombers or the HP bombers, or whether I can bring all three.

Oh, by all means, bring the one that YOU are most excited to play with. Unless, of course, you actually have a scenario that uses all three...

I will bring the Zep, as there is an Over The Trenches Early War scenario for this month that uses a Zep. It's for five players, but we can scale up it if we have more players show up. And I will bring the HPs, since that will allow us to fly late war planes. I just need to make bases for them--Keith at the Aerodrome has been out of them.

I'm digging through storage bins at the moment... what sorts of planes should I bring?

  37. #937

Someone answered a RFC Home Defence Squadrom question on The Aerodrome thusly:

    By December 1916 there were 11 RFC Home Defence Squadrons - 33 (FE2) at Gainsborough, 36 (BE2, BE12, FE2) at Seaton Carew, 37 (BE12, FE2) at Woodham Mortimer, 39 (BE2) at Woodford, 43 (Sopwith Strutter) at Northolt, 50 (BE2, BE12) at Harrietsham, 51 (BE2, BE12) at Hingham, 75 (Avro 504NF) at Goldington, 76 (BE2, BE12) at Ripon, 77 (BE2, BE12) at Turnhouse and 78 (BE2, BE12) at Hove.

So, other than the zepp, what do we intend to do?

    I found my FE2 and BE2.

I have a BE2c and and Avro, plus a 1 1/2 strutter (I think), so we should have plenty of planes. In the scenario I want to play there are German planes too, and those will be Eindeckers.

    Rightio.

We should have a good turnout. A guy I went to school with, who I haven't seen since about 1985, is planning on being there. And his son, who is 11, too. I'm bringing my kids, but I doubt they will want to play. And, there is an outside chance that one of my best friends, who moved away about four years ago and who has never played, will be joining us. He moved back to our area in July, but he is in Virginia, which is a bit of a haul during rush hour. He turned 50 last week, and the Friday night gaming group all pitched in and bought him a WoG Dual Pack, so hopefully he'll want to give it a try.

I saw that the Family Game store has Canvas Eagles night on the 4th Monday of every month. Any of you go to those? I seem to recall an older guy joining us for Wings back in the spring asking if we would like to try Canvas Eagles.

I've missed the last couple of outings, will definitely try to make it in a couple of weeks.

  47. #947

I've been to Canvas Eagles twice. It is fun but it is a bit more involved and plays slower, at least when some of us aren't super familiar with the rules. We will get faster but right now we've only gotten one sortie in per night with 4 or 5 players. I'll bring the plane record sheets to the next WoG night so you can see them and I can explain more about how it works.

Thanks I figured it would be slow. I'll try to be at the next one.

I did play one game of CE with my son Ryan (I've brought him to WoG a couple of times). It was tough sledding as we were learning the game as we played. It seemed hard to get a burst.

Anyway I'd like to hear more at the next WoG session.

The guy who runs it actually has a house rule extending the firing range and arc; from my slim experience with Canvas Eagles, it is a major improvement.

If there's a definite contingent planning to go this month, we may want to take a head count and inform the store at the next WoG game, so they can try to get ahold of the CE showrunner...

Will and I were both there this past Monday along with two other guys, Mark and John, for a total of 5. Terry flew a 2 seater trying to get home from a recon mission with 2 Albatros D.Vas coming to provide cover. Will and I flew Spad XIIIs to intercept. When one of the fighters got shot down, the person came in 3 turns later with a new plane. Will got the kill shot on the two seater for an Entente victory.
