Default AAR February 25th, 2024 The Wright Flight

The Wright Flight took to the skies for another exciting mission.

This meeting we were at Capstone Games in Cincinnati, Ohio.

We did some Escadrille Lafayette Action this meeting. First mission was three Nieuport 11 versus a Fokker E.III and a Pfalz E.IV.

Here come the brave American Volunteers!

The Germans failed to get the recon, but took out three planes.

A good set of three fun games!

    Great action all around Dan.

That's some serious air dueling there! Your third picture is pretty much a handbook definition of "dogfight"!

We tried a bit of restricted altitudes which meant the fighters in this case could only have three pegs, and the Albatros C.III could only have two. We are working on a five peg altitude system and meshing the planes to their historical altitudes within just those five bands, well really four as we assume that all planes have at least two pegs. I also want to dispel with shooting from a higher peg...these altitude bands represent hundreds of meters/yards, so shooting from one peg height to another is not realistic. So, if two planes are at the same altitude peg, but one has climb counters and the other does not, maybe that is where the +1 height advantage comes into play.

Restricting the pegs also causes another issue, over dives to remove fires. Again, as each peg represents a massive amount of vertical distance, over dive could be as follows:

Dive card, drop one peg if no climb counters, then straight for the over dive, but no additional peg drop. If climb counters are present, remove all climb counters on dive (stay at same peg height), then for the over dive drop one peg. Conversely, could drop a peg but keep the same number of climb counters with one peg lower, then on the over dive remove the climb counters.

I FINALLY get to grab some credit here as Dan has the great LE planes you have seen before. The one with the white striping on the top wing and the linen colored are both ones I worked on. Not 100% complete with the former - needs to have RUM in white on both sides, but I do not have the patience to try freehand. Dan inspired me with his several LE planes in which he added the various letter designations. I am working on another linen colored plane, this time an N.16, which will also have the American style roundels on top. The two linen planes are historically accurate as there are photos of them in the Albatros Productions book on the Nieuports of the LE.

UPDATE - sorry, in re-reading this it sounds snarky and a bit high faluting...not my intent at all.

Darryl - have you tried making a RUM decal? I couldn't free-hand those letters either.

    Nice action!

Worryingly small damage totals on the shot-down Pfalzes, though - were a lot of the cards "+1"?

Yes! If the totals do not seem right, then some were +1. I did not make that very clear. Sorry about the confusion.
