    Mission Briefing: https://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sh...1917-by-Hu-Rhu

During the buildup toward the Spring offensive, British High Command was pressing for updated photos of the German front lines.
Accordingly, several sorties were sent to get confirmation of the situation.

One such sortie was assigned to 57 Squadron RFC.
Led by the most senior pilot of the group, Lt Douglas Winterbottom (and his Observer AM3 William ‘Bill’ Holder) the unit had been allocated with the most recent two-seaters available: the Bristol Fighter B.F2A

Conditional to their acceptance of these new aircraft was the instruction that the flight follow the doctrine that they remain in close formation if attacked, in order to inflict the most damage possible to the enemy.

The other aircrews assigned were 2Lt Harold Mulock & AM1 Patrick McNeaney and 2Lt Neil Stead & AM3 William Holme.
All were eagerly looking forward to trying out these new machines.
Rumour had it they were far better than the old R.E.8 ‘Harry Tate’ or the Sopwith 1-1/2 Strutter.

The Flying Doctrine neutralized some of the benefits of the more powerful engine, so at first the crews were not particularly impressed by their new chariots.

As they crossed from No Man’s Land into enemy territory, Winterbottom noticed some by now familiar aircraft approaching and waggled his wings to attract attention of the other pilots.
On the other side, three Albatros D.III of Jasta 24 ‘Adler’ were eying the approaching Brits.
Ltn Felix Eisenhardt and Ltn Dietrich Oelker were in fairly close formation, while Ltn Jens Höfer was a short distance off to their right.

Oelker is over-anxious and darts toward the Brisfits.
Now that he is closer he ponders if these are new machines as their silhouette is a little different from ones he has fought in the past.

Well done, gentlemen, that was a new type offered by the Englanders but much the same as the previous it would seem from first appearances.. At least you all made it back. Congrats to Jens on doubling his score, that's well worth a party to celebrate !

Ltn Jens Höfer is awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class for his third & fourth victories for the Kaiser

    On t'other side;

Canadian 2Lt Charles Johnsen joins the Bull Terriers as replacement for young Mulock.

Lt Douglas Winterbottom collects a Bar to his Military Cross for his service to King & country

Great action Pete and well done to Hofer for a double. Glad you enjoyed the scenario - those Bristols are tough buggers but I've never seen so many jams in a single mission before. I bet you almost run out of tokens. Rep inbound.

Good fight there, Pete - and pretty close given that 1 or 2 different damage cards could have made a huge difference. It was one-on-one at the end.

Maybe Winterbottom should be called Ironbottom.

Hofer saves the day for the Alders! 2 kills, getting close to another ace in your hangar. Tough fight but a great win to come out on top of three tandems.

Shouldn't Oelker have taken a fire damage for his straight after the Spilt-S while on fire?

Planning a straight while on fire is by the rule an illegal move. Straight after Immelmann or Spilt-S...? I've always played it that way. You did take a shot while in a blind spot so it all works out!

It will depend when he was set on fire though. It's hard to tell from the AAR, he may have been lit up on the first move of the turn in which case there is no penalty on the second straight of the Immel as it's already part of the planned turn. If the second straight is part of the turn after he was set on fire, then he's got a problem !

Yes. As Oelker had already taken a fire damage (5!) before the Split-S then its clear this maneuver ending with a straight was ill advised.

Well I guess Oelker "got away with one" this time

I honestly thought I had seen that Immelmann and Split-S, even thought they contain straights, were not considered for illegal moves when on fire.

So would Juan take two A damage in an Immelmann??

Any Juan would take 2 damage cards for planning an Immelmann while on fire.

Ah, but what is the Immelmann is over the end of a turn - I.e., the final straight of the Immelmann / split-s is the first card of the next turn. Was it planned by Juan?

The rule is you can't plan a straight when on fire, ergo you can't plan an Immelmann, or, a split S reversal. This applies to the second straight when it occurs in the turn after you caught fire. This has been confirmed by Andrea on more than one occasion.
What may have confused you is the Immelmann card itself does not attract a penalty as it's not a straight.

Albeit planned the previous turn that card is considered as having been planned for the second turn. The point has been argued with Andrea but he was adamant on the rule.
Note his preference for resolution is instant destruction, the penalty A damage card is an Ares addition to his original rules.
I'd argue you could plan a Split S when still of fire if the fire is extinguished that turn and the straight occurs in the next turn, as the stall and Immel cards do not break the rules or incur penalty.
