Thread: Escorting Solo planes

    Default Escorting Solo planes

I've been doing some solo stuff using solo rules from the Tyneside Wargames Club. I just had an escourt mission where I had to escourt a two seater which uses the AI to move. The problem is that instead of the two seater trying to get away and let the scouts take care of the enemy, the AI takes it towards them. Anybody else had this problem?

I would use the auto movement rules from the RAP for the 2 seater. That makes it a bit more random

The solo rules are designed for AI attack planes that move towards the target plane. As far as I know, no one has come up with solo charts specifically intended for avoiding combat. In your case, you would do as Gary said or alternatively select a fix point on the map and use the rules to move the AI plane toward that point.
Just be creative. Many tricks are possible. I sometimes define a path* by placing checkpoints on the map. As soon as the AI plane touches a checkpoint it will then head for the next one....

What Fabrizio said above: "the solo rules are designed for AI attack planes..."

Which works well if you want a fight. Are you "aiming" the two-seater at oncoming planes? If that isn't the mission, you won't get the results you want.

If you want the two-seater to bomb, or take photos of, something, aim the two-seater at that. Use an objective marker as your aim point ('target plane' in the solo rules), and ignore the enemy plane(s). The two-seater should appear to aggresively 'attack' your aim point.

Note that occasionally, you should mix up the aim point, if you want the two-seater to avoid enemy planes, and not be totally predictable.

Sometimes in using the solo system you have to be the I in AI. As Mike said, the system is set up for planes fighting each other. When you have a photo/bombing or other target oriented mission plane you have to have its orientation to its target, not the enemy planes.
