Thread: A Trio of Grumman Wildcats

Default A Trio of Grumman Wildcats

These are my just completed Grumman F4F-3 Wildcats. They began as the Fiddlers Green F4F-4 which I modified to be the F4F-3 (some changes to the wing). I also recolored the planes to depict those of VF-3 (USS Lexington, February 1942). After some trials at building at 1/200 scale, I built these at a more manageable 1/172, half way between 1/144 and 1/200.

Nice! Perchance do you have a photo reference for F-8's anti-glare panel, or was that just a conjecture for visual differentiation?

I'm toying with adding some 1/200 Trumpeter plastic Wildcats to my Sprue Brothers order, possibly doing the same thing as my planned TBD Devastators and marking them with a full set of "Yellow Wings" era ID colors for different sections and ships.

Diamondback.....good question! On F-8 I retained the anti-glare coloring on the original Fidders Green model just to make the plane different from the other two. F-1 represents the a/c flown by Lt Cdr John Thach, F-3 is that of Lt Edward 'Butch' O'Hare, whereas F-8 would be 'unk pilot'.
