[I was initially going to use 3 scouts per side but a nasty bout of cold/flu left me exhausted and with little energy, so 2 per side it had to be]
It had been a while since Karl Krallen had been in the air, and it was not the time to relax. He and Brennen had become separated approaching No Man’s Land and now an English scout was bearing down on him. Off to his right he spotted what looked to be a DFW tandem.
In the DFW, low on fuel and returning from dropping a few bombs on an enemy aerodrome, Werner Trieber struggled to stay alert as he lost blood from the AA wound to his thigh. Kumpel, his observer, was growing increasingly worried. Despite the swirling planes ahead, Trieber set course for home with the words of Willi Esel ringing in his head: “Don’t damage my favorite plane!” Werner smirked; Willi thought every tandem was his favorite plane.
Krallen turns towards the DFW as Rupert Babbage in his Sopwith Pup scores from long range.
Also approaching the fight and in similar circumstance was an FE2b piloted by the wounded John Gillespie and his observer, Clinton Riley.
[For the FE2b in games without altitude, I roll a D6 (hit on 1 or 2) to determine an eligible rear shot – the gunner can decide to take either that shot or one available in the forward 180* arc but not both]
Babbage presses his attack on Krallen but jams his MG.
[My fever-addled brain made me miss a photo here. Nothing that swayed the outcome, but Babbage had mistimed
his Immelmann in front of Krallen and the tandem. Elsewhere the triplane closed on Brennen. Damages were:
Babbage’s Pup: 2 & 1LR from Krallen (Sharp Eye used), 2 from Kumpel
Brennen’s Alb D.II: 0 from Asbury’s triplane]
A shower of lead in the air hits nothing.
Babbage and Brennen nearly collide as Asbury swears angrily at his poorly-sighted gun.
Asbury’s triplane finally finds the mark as Brennen prepares to Split-S to avoid more trouble.
The speedy triplane brushes past the Albatros as Babbage shows off the agility of his Pup.
Babbage fires on Krallen but suddenly his plane explodes as Brennen finds the Pup dead ahead.
Gillespie takes a shot at the German tandem.
A heartbeat later, Krallen takes damage from the Fee as he gives some in return, but it’s Kumpel who rakes the gondola
of the FE2b hitting poor Gillespie who can no longer control the R.A.F. machine as it spirals down.
Weighing the situation from his faster and undamaged plane, Asbury still doesn’t care for the 3-1 odds and elects to turn for home.
