Thread: September 2023 Workbench

    Default September 2023 Workbench

So what is everyone working on this month?

Post discussion of B-17s with Hedeby at Doncaster, I checked my inventory to find I only had 4, not 5 as I thought! Regardless, I determined to start repainting a couple of them so as not to have 3 B-17Gs with identical nose art and colour schemes. After sometime down the rabbit hole on the excellent https://b17flyingfortress.de/en/ site. I began on the first repaint to represent Little Miss Mischief, a B-17G that crash landed twice and was holed by flak once so badly that the whole rear fuselage was removed and replaced. Along with other repairs this resulted in an incredible patchwork of bare aluminium and camouflage.

Work in progress on the painting:

And work in progress on a plane card:

The second ship is likely to be less significant, adapting the stock "A Bit o' Lace" to another 447th BG machine, probably "Fuddy Duddy" or "Milk Wagon" although those are both late model machines with the staggered waist guns, whereas the ARES model has the early symmetrical arrangement.

I also need to take my paintbrush to the ARES model to correct numerous errors for "A Bit o' Lace" including overpainting the ID bands with insignia blue on the wing and medium green on the fuselage, olive drab instead of black anti-glare on the engines, white instead of yellow cowlings and grey not OD on the underside of the replacement aileron.

Nice looking work so far on that B-17. An inspiring project.

I have a few planes to finish up to complete a couple of flights from Origins. One J26 Alb DVa and a pair od RNAS9 Camels.

Completed the card, now I have to finish the plane. Will need some custom decals for this one!

Wouldn't the waist gunners, 4 & 5, be A/A as they were single 50 cals?

Hmm, not much activity in this thread.

Started some time ago and completed this month.

The Imam Ro 57 prototype flew in 1939 but it was only in 1943 that few dozens of Ro 57bis were delivered, theoretically with dive bomber capability. They saw no combat, as most were destroyed on the ground during a bombing in July 1943.

I went for the 3-color camo scheme of the prototype instead of the boring operational scheme. Yellow/brown blotches over dark green, decals home-made

There are stats... 57 (MGs) or 57bis (MGs and Cannons)?

    Great, Mike!
Ok, allow me to be picky. The poached-egg style camo on your drawing was used only on Macchi 200/202. The 3-color schemes of other manufacturers was a more irregular mess of interlocked sand/brown blotches.

Stats were in the USC File, for both planes. Base is Fighter, with the wingspan under 50'.

The Ro.57Bis was supposedly used in the listed unit, so I used it. And, yeah, the paint scheme is one I did up from thin air, as I couldn't find a decent top-down image of a camouflaged Ro.57.

just watched a video on youtube about this very aircraft. sounds like it had a good bit of potential had they been able to get it in the air sooner.
