Thread: Removing Decals

    Default Removing Decals

Need some advice from the hobby experts out there.

I want to personalize an SE5a (I'm using Bishop's) and would like to know the best way to remove decals. What is the best technique?

    Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

    Best to all.

I've done several repaints, including changing the letter on Bishop's SE5a from a Z to an X. I just paint over the decals using light coats, blending it into the original paint, until the decals are no longer visible. I've had pretty good success at matching colors by blending drops of paint until it matches. I finish it off with a coat of Testor's Dullcoat over the whole plane.

Depending on the model I have had success with just Scotch tape.

Place it over the decal press firmly while watching TV. Let it sit for 20 minutes of so and lift see if the decal stays attached to the Model or the tape.

If it doesn't lift press with a finger nail and keep trying.

Doesn't work all of the time but it is worth a try

But how do you remove the decal if there's nothing good on?

Do it during a Bills game? That is enough action to keep your mind occupied.

Ohh wait or is that the remedy for not being able to sleep?

Hi Mac, I rather do the same as Coog, paint over the Decal and re-apply

The WoW decals are varnished over, but I can usually get them off without trashing the paint underneath by scratching them with my thumbnail! That's how I did the Jasta 11 repaints of Rahn's aircraft, then touched up any dodgy areas with paint as Coog suggests.

It's probably worth mentioning that as a guitarist I have unusually long thumbnails! I wouldn't recommend taking up a musical instrument just so you can grow your nails long enough to scratch off decals though.

One probably should avoid the lopping off of a loved-ones' or even strangers' fingers as well... even if they do have nice, strong, long fingernails!

I use Testors Dullcoat and its great but, if you decide to try it, make sure you don't breathe the vapour in and use a rubber glove over your hand if you're holding the model while spraying as its got some serious drawbacks to your health if not used properly!
