Thread: Official Airplane Bucket List

    Default Official Airplane Bucket List

This thread is for anyone to post a bucket list of vintage airplanes they want to fly in before they take that final flight over the horizon. This idea came up during a recent trip to Catalina Island (where the only Catalina planes are on t-shirts or carved out of mahogany). We were at the one airport (privately owned) and I was talking to the person who works in the tower. He mentioned that a P-51 had flown in and out the day before. I lamented not being there... And then it dawned on me, as paranoid as I am about sharks when I swim in the ocean I have no hesitation jumping into an aircraft that is over 70 years old. This lead me to create a short list of airplanes I have a high desire to ride in. The following airplanes are in priority order and one has already been checked off. I also wanted to limited my list to a focused top five but include as many or few as you like on your list. I will likely add more when I finish mine:

    Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress DONE
    North American B-25 Mitchell*
    Consolidated PBY Catalina
    Douglas SBD Dauntless
    Boeing B-29 Superfortress

Well is a part of a bucket list. Flew on the B-17 YANKEE LADY a few years back. I was lucky to get behind to Co pilot so a good view in the cockpit and outside the window.

I would love to experience a water landing in one of those.

Well I have flown on a B-17 and have seen all the planes, except the trip, so this list is pretty good for me.

Is the B-25 a regular at the MAPS event?

Not much chance down here for "classic" Warbird rides but so far I have had the chance to fly in a DC3, DC4, Constellation, DH-Otter, Tiger Moth, 737,747, Fokker Friendship, Dash 10, Carabu & various single & twin engined Aircraft (mostly Cessna's).

For the past few years, yes. It's one of the Collen's Foundation planes. Usually, MAPS gets a B-17, a B-24, a B-25 and a dual-seat P-51. The B-17 was down Sunday due to engine problems in #3.
Check the Collen's page for next year's schedule. If your coming down next year, let me know; we can do dinner.

These four planes were here the weekend before, Karl, and I went to new article advertising them and saw the cost of a ride in the various planes...wow! Probably a reasonable cost, all things considered, but a bit rich for my blood...

I'm glad Thomas was able to snag a B-25 ride - it and the B-17 were probably doing most of the flying when they were here, along with several circuits of the P-51 (whose engine sound is just superb). Didn't see the B-24 flying - perhaps it was suffering from engine problems while here...

    All the best,
    Matt
