Default AAR - Dawn Patrol Dogfight

An early morning patrol of two P-40 Warhawks notice two incoming enemy Ki-61 Hien "Tonys" and decide to engage. Here are the combatants:

Other than this photo of their initial approaches, I constrained the photos in this AAR to the 7 combat passes that determined the outcome of the dogfight. Here are the combatant's initial approaches:

This photo is just after the first combat pass, the green Ki-61 taking 5 damage points at short range in the pass:

On the second pass both P-40's fire at the silver Ki-61 from long range totaling 7 damage points, P-40 number 54 receives 6 damage points and a wounded pilot

On the third combat pass the green Ki-61 manages to "cross the T" of P-40 number 54 (wounded pilot restricted maneuvers didn't help situation) inflicting enormous damage and recording a kill.

The 7th and decisive pass results in both pilots exchanging fire at long range and in a bit of bad luck for the P-40 "BOOM" -- the silver Ki-61 limps home with 14 damage points total out of 16 allowable.

I thought the P-40 had the game in the bag with relatively little damage and the Hien clearly on the ropes -- ah well -- the Fates intervened!
The game was played 8/14/2017 at my place.

Pretty even fight right to the last chit Bill. I am looking forward to getting some official Ares P-38s to run up against the Ki 61s as well.

Do you use altitude in your games?

I am new to WW II gaming so for now, just getting down the mechanics...in a while will move up to altitude play.

Altitude allows you to avoid having to endure head on passes with gun boats like the Ki-61. It is not that difficult to learn, it will add a whole new 'dimension' to your games!

Bill, you'll get some practice at Council as we'll be using altitude there.

Nice little encounter. Will be flying Gladiators and I16s against Nates and Claude at Doncaster. Might have time to pop a P40 on.
See you on the Dark Side......

    Carl,
Good point on tactics -- I have read that the P-40s ability to dive on the enemy from superior altitude gave them a distinct advantage. I'm going to have to work on learning faster!

I have read that when they were first deployed they were mistaken for 109s. This game was the first time I used them and really was impressed with their firepower.

Other than the Altitude and out diving the Japanese, the AEF in China developed a tactic called the Thatch and Weave, which is basically the planes split and try to take the Japanese planes in the sides or flanks rather than a heads up battle.
I've tried this when not using altitude and the person I was up against sent both Zeros against one plane allowing the flank or tail shots. It will also split the enemy forces if they go after individual planes, thus cutting down the concentrated firepower from a head on attack.
