Thread: German sqn's.

  1. #1

    Unhappy German sqn's.

Okies. A really newbie question. .
I don't really care how this sounds to all the experts out there but here goes .........

I'm looking for a website/books/ or even places that will list german/Italian sqn's (bombers/fighters/reconnaissance) that were in the battle of Britain ( before and afterwards ) but based around the area in question. I know how to find the alliance side of the battle but asking google the right questions is giving me a headache.
I've found some 1/200 scale ju88a's and now have a falco 42 to my collection. The ju88a's are plastic so I have a blank canvas to play with.
The me109e's I'm adding to gallant's sqn but all the rest is up for question? ?????.

What I'm after is a site or sites that tells me where to start. If I have a reference point I can research it.

    Thanks

Yeah. You have to ask, pretty much exactly, the right question, to get the right answer. Which means you'd have to know something about the answer you want.

Knowing that there are two Bf-109 Nexus minis tells you about the units they were in (JG 26 and JG 53). For other types of planes, you might need books.

Give me a moment to check mine...

OK. The quick and dirty check could be these links:

Wikipedia - RAF Fighter Command - Order of Battle 1940

Wikipedia - Luftwaffe - Order of Battle - August 1940

Then, you could check this site for colour schemes? Asisbiz Historical Photos of WWII Aircraft

Scroll down to the country and aircraft type you want, and click on it. Example: scroll down to: 'Luftwaffe Kampfflieger - German Bombers" and click on 'Ju 88's'.

This will take you to a page like this: Asisbiz.com - Ju-88.html

Then, you look for the specific unit you want, and then click on the banner name of the unit (on the right in red), say 'Kampfgeschwader 54' (one of the units from the Battle of Britain, flying Ju 88s).

And you get images on this page: Asisbiz.com - KG54.html, giving you colour schemes and markings.

NOTE: This part of the site is for doing skins for a video game, but it's great for doing models and cards.

I can throw a sqn number into the german info but it will only tell me what it wishes to. Not what was in that raid or on that day

    Update to Post #4.

PS: Are you asking for units on a particular day and geographical location? You might need war diaries for specific units to do that.

    Thanks... don't care if it's a game skin so long as it's a proper souce ... can't have a sqn that didn't exist. ..

That's the cross-check with at least one other source, and why I suggested Wikipedia. Not perfect, but usually accurate. I have books on the Battle of Britain, and some of them list units on given days, but you didn't provide specifics. The two sources above should get you close enough not to be questioned about a "Battle of Britain" scenario that you throw together.

I did RAF Station Ventnor being attacked, using Nexus minis (Bf-109s, Ju 87s, Spitfires and Hurries), but the units the minis represented were never used together, really. The scenario was still fun.

PS: Hmmm... One of my Battle of Britain books states that Ventnor was hit by Ju 88s of KG 51, escorted by Bf-110s of ZG 2 and 76, with top cover by Bf-109s from JG 53. So, I got some of that wrong. It was still fun.

You need something like the Battle of Britain Combat Archive (http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...Combat+Archive) which records each day's raids and their participants. The two problems with this is that it is a ten volume set and they have only released the first 5 volumes so far (covering 10th July to 18th August), and the cost of each volume being around £25. It would be useful if someone could go through these and summarise each raid and update as each new volume is published. Now, who do we know who is daft enough to have shelled out the dosh for this series so far?

Find a copy of "The Hardest Day" by Alfred Price, (ISBN 0-85368-831-1) as this gives a complete breakdown of the order of battle (August 18th, 1940) - my bible.

Secondly, look for "The Battle of Britain Camouflage and Markings" by Peter Scott and Gary Madgwick, (On Target 70th Anniversary Special) (barcode 9-781904-643364) which is a superb reference and colour guide

Also search for my previous post "Warm Woolen Mittens" which has a lot of useful links for BoB...

    Hi Tristan.

I have a copy of the JG26 War Diary 1939-42 which gives the reader a day by day account of that Geschwader's operations. If you intend to make Adolf Galland's unit (first III./JG26 and later the entire Geschwader) the basis of your German fighter force this would be a great reference.

I have attached a scan of one page as an example -

If you want that and a pile of other reference material my advice is to sign up to www.scribd.com for a month (about $10) and download a swag of books from the 'documents' section - that is where I obtained a PDF copy of both volumes of the JG26 War Diary.
