Preferably before all the people who made the mistake of buying tickets for _Valerian_ sneak into the theatre to see a *good* movie.... >;)

You've seen Valerian already? Its not released here for another week or two.

Just saw Dunkirk for the second time in two days. It is a fine film capturing the desperation of the time and examining themes of duty, courage and sacrifice. The aerial scenes are great, Nolan used only real aircraft and large scale radio control models - no CGI except for the weapons fire (which was well done).

No spoilers but there is one engagement that is a little far-fetched, and also count how many two second bursts the Spitfire flown by Tom Hardy fires!!

Go see it more than once, I picked up details the second time around I completely missed in the first screening. Well worth the price of admission.

Only saw it once , but can definitely recommend it a great movie. Was surprised at the number of young women/girls that went to see it, at lest they didn't squeal when Harry Styles showed up on screen. And it was a packed house I had to sit in the front.

_Valerian_ was released here this weekend -- it is on-target to be The Biggest Financial Disaster Of 2017. It was out-earned by movies which have been in theatres for three weeks already. Consensus is "it's a typical Luc Besson Product -- visuals are impressive; everything else is s***".

I saw "Dunkirk" two days ago and positively loved it (and I'm a tough film critic)! Terrific film making, wonderful costumes, and really great aerial scenes. I recommend it heartily. Seeing the scene where all those fishing boats and yachts were streaming toward the Dunkirk shore reminded me of Churchill's "finest hour" quote.

I saw a review on TV today and he gave it a 5. Said it was an outstanding movie. I have to go see it next week. He said each segment of the movie was set for the shot. Ground/Air and Sea.

Im definitely getting my tickets! I did notice that in the trailer, that the plane that is "one of ours" is a bristol blenheim. Its fairly easy to see its defining features just by pausing the trailer right at the moment where it flies over the civilian boats.

Unfortunately it's the only time you see the Blenheim Mk.I in the film, but it's a great little cameo.

Yeah, I've added it to my must see list. Hm, theaters are typically un-crowded on Mondays.

I have seen Dunkirk last Friday with my buddy Darek and must admit it is a VERY good and a VERY different war movie from what you might have expected. Let me make my point why:
    1. time loops; you can see the same events from different points of view,
    2. it's more a poem than a movie (final Spitfire scene...),
    3. you do not even know the name of the main hero (if there is one...),
    4. there are NO German soldiers in the movie. Enemy is like a phantom menace.
    5. air scenes are the most realistic from what I have seen so far (however there are "spanish made "Me 109s, like in "Battle of Britain".
    6. shell shock behaviours are perfectly filmed.
    7. no flying body parts, no "over screen" blood splashes.
    8. the soundtrack is somehow annoying, but really good and interesting (Zimmer). Rather hard to enjoy without the movie (I really tried...).
    9. My favourite scene? The one on a train station and the Englishman outside the carriage window.

    Hats off.

    DEFINITELY, Pete.
My wife is eager to watch the movie as well. It is a war film every woman should enjoy for the emotional aspect of it. Although thereare no love/romantic episodes an I (if counted well) only 4 actresses play in it (nurses)!

    I loved it too.

The only negative reviews I've read seem to be by the type of professional critic who expect formula, and are made to feel small by anything other. True, the film is based on a few narrative conceits, but with few exceptions these don't detract from it. (Those that do were bombs that kill without dismembering, and a Royal Air Force consisting of 3 spitfires and 1 Blenheim.)

Throwing into the action without tedious character establishment added to the drama and chaos. The casting was perfect. It was also refreshing to be reminded that the outcome really was uncertain at that time.

It was hilarious that 90% of the audience were 17 or 18 year old girls and their boyfriends. Something for both, I guess.

Tell you what guys, I thought it was a Schnauzer. I can't believe it's getting good reviews here. I was looking at my watch at about an hour and ten.

The airplanes were nice eye-candy, but what they did didn't make one lick of sense. It appears to me that the director did not get even one person with knowledge of the subject matter to weigh in, or if they did he was ignored.

The only thing I noticed that was wrong was that the Bf-109s had yellow noses. Even though the Luftwaffe did do this, it wasn't until a few months after the evacuation of dunkirk.

    Same here!
And it is very good to see the youngsters, for they do not know what war may mean and some of them may treat it like a digitalized adventure-time on smartphone.

Saw the film on Wednesday and the Cinema was packed, very unusual for an early showing. The biggest audience at this time of day (11.55 am) I've so far experienced was 6 and that included me for the Great Wall.
The film (Dunkirk) is really good. I could be picky as there are one or two inconsistencies/errors but I won't. Overall a tour de force. I still think I prefer the original black and white version with John Mills playing the lead, also well worth watching if you can find a copy.

You are absolutely right about #9, What a powerful scene! There were a few scenes in this movie where I wanted to stand up and cheer! You are incorrect about #4 though. There is a brief glimpse at the..........I don't want to spoil it for anyone who has not seen it yet.

I know about #4, Jim, you are right; do not want to spoil the scene as well and I wrote phantom, but would have rather put down it like: "shapes"?

SWMBO and I saw it yesterday in the fancy cinema scope surround sound cinema. There were only 4 patrons including us there. We did not have to fight for the best seats :-) I personally did not think too much of it. Not much mention of how many rescued (338,000) plus I think 100,000 Frenchmen to the 4th of June, the number of small boats involved and the number of losses. No follow through on the two characters who tried so desperately to escape (British Army lad plus the Frenchman in British Army uniform). It would have been nice to know what happened to them. I also thought the perimeter the rearguard were fighting from seemed way too close to the beach and there was too much emphasis on scenes of people being drowned, shot, and killed in other ways. I expected them to have made more of the story rather than see the same things from 3 viewpoints. It was realistic though in the sense of what people will do to escape.

It almost struck me as the director attempting to tell the story only in images, not words. Show a bunker with French soldiers in it, this represents the valiant defense. Show three airplanes, this represents the air war. Show one small boat, this represents the flotilla. No text to carry the story, no speaking. We're witnesses looking through the fat end of a telescope. In some ways this was more of an art-house movie than an epic. That may be why Hollywood has been so enamored with it.

Try and get a copy of the original John Mills Dunkirk. It has all the missing things you mention above.

Saw the movies yesterday and thought it was very good. Different from most war movies. I think it gives a good idea of what it was like just waiting there to be rescued. I also went to an early show 11:15 and there were maybe 12 people there. I haven't been to a movie since Master & Commander so this was a new experience for me. You pick your seat when you get your ticket and the seats...I could have fallen asleep while watching the movie. The sound was also something else. Sudden gunshots in one scene made me jump out of my seat. Sounds I heard many years ago.

If any U.K. members would like to buy a copy of the black and white 'Dunkirk' movie starring John Mills, Richard Attenborough and Bernard Lee, go to your local HMV music and video shop. If you buy something else in the shop, you can buy a copy of 'Dunkirk' for £2.99 instead of the usual price of £5.99.
