Default Introducing myself - Catterick, Yorkshire

    Hello all,

My name is Roy, I'm in my mid-30s, and I'm from Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire.

My hobby experience is mainly in miniature wargaming and table top games, and am only just starting out with Wings of Glory as other members of my gaming group (the Old Guard from the Northallerton area of North Yorkshire) have just begun to play on club days. So far they've only had the one game of WW1 (unfortunately I wasn't able to attend) and several members of the group have also begun to play WW2 amongst themselves. I'm more interested in the WW1 version of the game, have bought for myself a couple of German aeroplane models and set to repainting them (in fictitious colours). I've just ordered a Nieuport 17 miniature and some British decals, as I'd like to repaint it as a RNAS machine (though still need to do the research for the details on colours, etc.) so I can join in club games as an Allied flyer, if needed to make up the numbers. I must admit to being mostly ignorant to historical fact regarding WW1 air combat, etc., so I'm aiming to learn as I go forward with Wings of Glory.

(below) The full extent of my Wings of Glory collection: German machines belonging my fictitious Jasta 89 (making up Imagi-Nations, or imaginary units is a 'fault' developed from my wargames experience)

I've just started working the UK wargames show circuit as a member of staff for Colonel Bill's Wargames Depot, so will hopefully meet a few of you as I travel up and down the country.

Thank you for the warm welcome (it is rather damp and cold outside, and not much better inside, as our central heating is turned off and a gas man is fitting a new boiler at the moment I hate to think what it must have been like hurtling through the air on such a day).

Cheers for the information about what is available on the forum, I'll certainly give them a look.

Nice job on the models. The color scheme looks great. Can’t wait to see more repaints. There is a fantastic hobby and history section to answer all your questions. Very helpful bunch of gents on here.

Welcome Roy, from my recollections of Catterick garrison, its always damp and cold although there used to be a nice little coffee shop in the whiteshops and a wrvs near the camp gate near the gym.

Anyway any questions just shout out someone will answer, we are down at Beachead but for me I am doing the wet version of the game pop over and say hello, just look for the forum banners

(welcoming head bobs) from teh lizard here in teh States.

Nothing wrong with fictional repaints, from a gaming poitn of view-the real point is to be able to track who is controlling which airplane. And yes, in that light, you've done a very good job with your repaints.

And your choice of a Nieuport 17, RNAS historical, RNAS fictional, or for that matter, any other Allied country is a good one-the Nieuport 17 was one of the most widely-used Allied single-seaters.

    Welcome, Roy!

Very nice couple of Albatri there!

I fully approve of fictitious squadrons; I'm working on having at least one of my own.

    Col. Bill's, eh?
The chaps who have relieved me of large quantities of moolah over the past three years, building 28mm towns for Wild West and modern Zombies................doubtless we'll meet when I come back for more.

Oh, just noticed that Deedles (Dave) joined up last month. We are both members of the Old Guard gaming group. Dave is the chap who owns the 28mm Sudan kit that was on show at Partizan show last year, under the Old Guard flag.

A hearty welcome from stateside...Ohio, home of the flying machine...as you've already noticed there is a sizable contingent of fellow Brits ready and willing to join you in combat.
As for history or knowledge of WW!, plenty of hours to meander through the Aerodrome to sort it out.
And lastly, a bit of imagination is a primary requirement for this group...you seem will suited to match up on all counts.

    Thumbs up

G'day Roy & welcome to the 'drome on behalf of the Pilots who fly in NSW down in Australia.
Great repaints on those Albatross' mate. Very well done!
If you are interested in learning about the RNAS there is a book available from Naval & Military Press in the UK for around 7 pounds Stirling.
I have just ordered a copy as it has lots of info plus pictures. Title is from memory "The RNAS in WW1".
Ares has issued two RNAS Camels, one for Ellwood with Hearts on the wings & fuselage & Stackards with the blue & white circles.
Take a look in the thread on released models down in the WW1 section.
Also look at my Avatar which is a slightly modified version of Ellwoods Camel. I have a Flight of 5 of these as the "Hearts of Oak" Naval Squadron I use in our Solo Campaigns.

Thank you, again, everyone, for the warm welcome

Thanks gully_raker! I had spotted that book already, but with your mentioning the publishers name I went on their website and discovered I could get the book far cheaper if bought direct from them. So allowing more money to spend on models

welcome to the drome Roy!!! excellent paintjobs. though the game is historic nothing wrong with imagined paintjobs! some of my favorite repaints are fictitious designs! you may only have 2 airplanes now, but in a shorter time than will seem possible, your airforce will have grown beyond all reason!!!

Glad to see you've wandered into the Forum, Roy - as others have said, it's a great place to encounter all sorts of madness and joy I hope you have as much fun here as I've had.

While your Jasta might be imaginary, those repaints look pretty historically accurate, all in all. Lovely work!

    All the best,
    Matt

I think fantasy planes are great. I'm working on a set of all the Sopwith planes for my wife. She is from Wales so she gets a Welsh Dragon on the top wing and flags on the fuselage. I look forward to seeing more of your growing squadrons.

Got to love a fantasy paint job - Here's a Caproni Ca3 of 95 Sqn RFC/RAF , the squadron was formed in October 1917 but disbanded in July 1918 and never became operational in WW1. We didn't have Ca3's in the RFC.

And one of my better known paint jobs - a captured Nieuport 17 sporting a 'patriotic' theme - seen in action at Colours last year

That repainted Nieuport really does looks good The colours don't make it a prominent bullet magnet for opponents, I hope? I often wonder if brightly painted miniatures draw more fire than more neutral or duller paint schemes...

Ha, seeing all these in-game photos is really bringing it home to me that I made a mistake in not buying the WGF rules box the other week, when I saw it for a reasonable price. I wasn't aware of the scarcity of some of the WG products, so thought there'd be plenty of stock for after I'd tried a game (another member of the group I game with has the WGF rules). Never mind, you live and learn

Hello Paul and Bob, thank you.

Met up with 'johnbiggles', yesterday, at ROBIN show, and hopefully will meet with John, again, (and a few more of you) at Hammerhead next month. I made the mistake of checking out Dave Lanchester's book stall and spotted quite the number of really interesting looking WW1 books. I resisted temptation (for now) and ended up buying Osprey books on Ancient Chinese and Mughul Indian instead (I play-by-mail a diplomacy/wargame set in the year 1700, and you never know what gems of historic information you can find amongst such books).

Yes, I'm still looking for such. I believe we'll both be at Hammerhead show, so will contact you via a personal message to see if we can sort out arrangements, etc. Thank you for letting me know.
