    Default Origins from my camera

Origins 2017 was a blast. A special thanks to Matt (Matt56) and Jim (rhodie80) for heroic effort to make it happen.
Without them pulling it together it might not have happened.

It was great to reunite with many of the wonderful Aerodrome members I met last year and to meet some new ones.

Last year I was purely on vacation and only played but this year I got to run three games of my own. Verdun, Raid on Rabaul and Deustch Dragons.

    Game one, Verdun.
Available to fly were MS Ns, MS Ps, N11s and Caudron G.4s for the French. The Germans had Fokker Eindeckers, Fokker D.IIs, Rumpler C.Is and Albatros C.IIIs. Each side had unknown ground targets to bomb and balloons to knock down as objectives.

Balloons, bombers and escort fighters before the mayhem.

We think the balloon on the right was made of titanium as the fire did practically no damage to it and bullets seemed to bounce off of it. It was not destroyed even though it was put on fire on the 2nd turn!

Next I played in Matt's U-13 game. 13, usually an unlucky number? Beautiful sub Matt!

Everyon got to fly two planes. I got to fly a Hanriot and a Macchi. Hanriots are fun and I had never flown a Macchi. Another very fun plane...er, boat to fly.

My second game, Raid on Rabaul. Six pilots, each flying two planes. Japanese each had two A6M5s while the Americans flew a P-38 and a B-25 H. 1st pass with a B-25 H had parafrags to take out ground targets, a 2nd pass with a new B-25 had a 1000 pounder to skip bomb the ships in the harbor.

    The rest of the show....

I got to play in a WW2 game in the Med. I flew a Spitfire Mk IX trying to stop Goliaths bringing supplies to Rommel. Right from the start I had a 109 on my tail but must have got up on the right side of the bed as the first volly at me was 0-0-3. I slowed and he overlapped. I dove and he then got a long shot from above, 0-0! I had to forget about the Goliath I was trying to attack to throw him off. I think I only got one shot on the Goliath. I flew above the beast and then went on to attack the second.

Here I flee a 109 and give up attacking the transport, flying over it heading on to the next one.

I got in several shots on the second Goliath. It had already been shot at by two other Spitfires. Getting in for my 3rd consecutive shot, second at close range, the Goliath splashed into the Mediterranean.

The third game I ran, Deustch Dragons, has a Liberator force on a secret bombing mission escorted by Mustangs and Thunderbolts. Of course ME109s and FW190s were there to stop them.
The Germans also let loose their secret weapon, dragons! Sadly for the Germans the dragons, once in the air, quickly forgot who feeds them.

German pilots in black work on a cunning plan. Karl is the German on the left.

Lastly I played in Tom's (CappyTom) Red Tails game. I started off on the wrong end of the action and spent the game trying to get into it. Near the end of the game Crystal asked where Peter was as she had no scoring whatsoever for me on the score sheet. It seemed whenever I would line up a target a B-17 would shoot it down the card before I would have had a shot on it. Finally on the next to last card played I got in my first shot, and I shot down the poor German. One shot, one kill. I guess I was just conserving my bullets to when they would count.

Thank you Peter for those pictures and nice AARs.

Nice to see some nice planed missions an exotic airplanes, lice a Caudron bomber in action in Columbus.

    You guys had really fun.

Those Italian/A-H front missions impresed me. The Phoenix fighter is really deadly behind a Caproni bomber. I think you did not use the special "hidden MG" card?

To continue I really like this A-H submarine. The miniature is simply beautiful and the scale is perfect for gaming. Did it move in the game?

Next this P-38 mission. Nice planes and hard fights over Rabaul. Can't wait for the next WGS series bringing some really iconis WW II Pacific theater planes.
Unfortunately the Japs shot down a lot of the US boys in this mission.

Flying dragons between a formation of B-24s. Not bad - let me think on the "Sucker Punch" movie.

Thanks again. This was a nice overview, Peter.

Thanks guys, glad to share. Wish everyone of you could attend.

Sven, the sub did move very slowly and not enough to make it elusive to bombing. I agree, Matt did an amazing job making that submarine.
I don't think the GM was using the special gun jam rule for the Phonix but it didn't matter as I never drew a jam card!

Guus, whatever it takes to get over here, do what you can. We'd love to see you.

I think we should make you Official Origins Game Photographer, Peter! These are all great shots And your planes from your scenarios are simply beautiful - I would be proud to have them in my hangar

Sven, the U-13 U-boot is a 3D printed model that a fellow we game with came up with - it's 1/144 scale, and I added some bits and bobs to flesh it out a bit. I agree with you that it works really well with the planes - I hope to refine the scenario and develop a couple of others for A-H games.

Thanks again for posting all of these wonderful pictures from Origins, Peter - they give a wonderful feel for the kinds of games you and others ran. Lots of gorgeous 'eye candy' here...

    All the best,
    Matt

Thanks for the U-Boot details, Matt.

I already "repped" you for the King Kong mission, so nothing left for the A-H U-Boot.

A neat report on all the action Peter. REP inbound. Nice to see some different aircraft being flown in the WW1 and WW2 missions. The dragons were awesome too.

Thanks Neil. The Dragons were a bit of fun. Those buggers quickly forgot who raised and fed them once they were flying amidst all the planes.

Running the Rabaul game makes me want to get the WW2 Pacific campaign rolling again. Once I catch up with the Bitter End I'll get the next PTO scenario on the table in July.

Once Op 2 is out of the way and my table is cleared of the Doncaster prep I'll be getting back in the air myself. Plenty of WW1 and WW2 missions to catch up on.

Sorry, I did bad job getting photos of everyone.

Tom was there with Crystal. He ran the Red Tails game, a flight of six B-17s protected by the Red Tail Mustangs.

Not everyone from last year were there. No Keith, no Bob (BBSuds) and Beth (TrenchWench), no Ken (Cowman), no Tommy (Tommy Z), no Chris (Fastgit), no Daniel (Dan-Sam). No Nightbomber.

Present were Matt (Matt56), Jim (rhodie80), Karl (Jager), Tom (CappyTom) and Crystal, Randy (BlackSheepOne), Phil (Milcoll73), Glen (Glen2112), Eric (7eat51) and Sue, Glenn (Jago58), Simon (Maverick), Ann (Misdomingo), John (von Fustercluck), Richard (Black Knigget), Dave (Caveman) and of course myself. There were more but I don't know everyone's name and Aerodrome handle.

Yes, get your repairs done right, then think about flying again. Maybe I can catch up in the Pacific in the meantime.

Glad you enjoyed Darell. Too bad you are located west of nowhere, a bit far to easily join in on the fun.

Yeh, we need better dragon trainers; they acted like Russian anti-tank dogs
Great game, that, and the dragons added a lot of action and color.

I must have been very lucky the year that I went there. We had a room at the Hilton that is attached to the convention center. I was told the dates for next year and the closest I can get is 3 miles away. have to consider that option.

3 miles isn't so bad. I was ~14 miles north of town this year and found it easy to get in in the morning and out at night.
