Drops falling into sound of soldier boots on the street.
Firstly...fighting in the church. 2 hours, 3 paras death.
Then...fighting for the crypt. 5 hours.

Followed by more than 13,000 arrests, an estimated 5,000 executed, including relatives of some of the participants, and the annihilation of the villages of Lidice and Ležáky along with most of their residents either immediately or in the camps. A high price paid by a brave people that also led to the immediate dissolution of the Munich Agreement (called the "Munich diktat" by the Czechs) signed by the United Kingdom, France, and Germany's ally Italy. The UK and France agreed that, after the Nazis were defeated, the annexed territory (Sudetenland) would be restored to Czechoslovakia (as it was then).
    Brave men all.

Here's a link to my album of photographs taken at St Cyril and St Methodius where the Czechs were surrounded, from 2016.There is a very good museum describing the event, showing what happened before, during and after the assassination. Very moving.

Given the skull-crushing incompetence of most of the NSDAP leadership: I tend to wonder if the elimination of one of the few truly-competent members of that group wasn't a deliberate act....
