"He is wise who watches"
Funny! Was it refferred to the first or second war British Army?
On the other hand was it Monty after Kasserine
who said unpolitely about US Army: "Those are our Italians."?
"We do not stop playing when we get old, but we get old when we stop playing."
Not uncommon seeing the elephant for the first time, brings a flight or fight mentality. They choose flight.
I've seen this working in a jail and always kept an eye on newbies and usually let them observe the first hostile encounter.
Unfortunately in war there is no usually no chance to just to observe the first encounter.
Watch the movie ZULU and I think that gives you an idea of what is being said. Stay Calm, get scared but stand your ground.

"Courage is the art of being the only one who knows you're scared to death."
Nothing against a British infantry squad, but I would coose the Spetznas battalion...

The US guys are fine comrades with much confidence, so if I change the choice above a little bit from a "squaddie" to a company, I would seriously reconsider my choice.
Voilŕ le soleil d'Austerlitz!
Don't forget the Gurkhas!
See you on the Dark Side......
