    Default Just getting started :)

Hi All hoping to get some advice before i hit 'buy'.

I'm excited to get into the game and live in Canada where product is scarce so i'm importing from US and don't want to either import too much or have to import another core set for tokens etc later.

Really love the BoB set, so set on that general theatre of war. Right now I have in my cart ready to buy; two starter sets, 2 stukas, 2 hurricanes, 2 109's and finally 2 Spits. So i'd have 6 109's and 6 spitfires along with two stukas and two hurricanes and two lots of tokens..

I heard that the ace cards are not in the starter set so figured i'd have to buy another squadron pack of 109 and spits, and a single is just lonely haha..

Thoughts on this from more experienced pilots very welcome.

    Thanks so much

Hi Brad, welcome to the Aerodrome. Sounds like you are getting a good mix of planes.

As long as you purchase at least one 109 and Spit via the squadron packs you'll have the ace cards needed. You didn't hear it from me but you could just make copies for the planes in the starter set if they don't have them. I don't have my starter set with me so I can't confirm if ace cards are included.

Cheers mate thanks for the suggestion!

I wrote them on facebook the confirmed the cards in the starter set is different than the squadron packs.

Do you agree that two starter sets are a good idea? It seems to me that a lot of this stuff sells out and becomes hard to find.

If you are intending on using many planes a second starter set may be useful to provide you with extra damage counters or you may want to keep one as a potential 'Collectors item'.

A second set for the damage counters and range rulers (and planes!) is a good idea.

    Very good idea!

If you're going to run multiples of each type on the table at the same time, double sets of chits are essential.
A rule book each, for you AND your opponent, is also a good idea!

So far, almost everything Ares (and their predecessor, Nexus) has released for the game has sold out quickly, leaving folks scratching around for follow-up purchases.
Ares are attempting to address this with Series reprints, but continuous production is, sadly, a pipedream.
Get what you can NOW; as in sports, "points on the board" are a lot better than points you predict you will gain in the future!

Hi Brad welcome to the Drome from West Yorkshire in the good old UK. I like your starter selection but you do seem to be a bit light on bombers. You could remedy this by adding a couple of ME 110's in the fighter/bomber role. Remember the Spits and Hurri's first task was to stop the bombers.
Fly safe and always watch your six.

welcome to the drome from a neighbor to the south Brad!!! you cant have too many minis. and at risk of sounding like a shill for the game, id buy as many minis in one order as you can. that way you pay less shipping from the us (which i assume is as crazy as shipping from up yonder is to down here) over the long run. the minis are quite addicting and im fairly sure, youll find yourself getting more and more as time goes on.

Aces and special cards are included in the Starter Set (check Spitfire and Me.109 in Wings of Glory on the two links) :
Acrobatic pilot - Technical eye - Cannon limited ammo - Drop tanks, for Me.109
    http://www.aresgames.eu/18474
Lucky Pilot - Daredevil - Sputtering Engine - Reverse Diver, for the Spitfire

And If you take also one Spitfire and one Me.109 Squadron packs, you will have the different special cards included (Perfect aim - Sniper).

On Ares Games website, the presentation of BOB Starter Set shows which planes can be used in the 12 page scenarios booklet :
    http://www.aresgames.eu/18313

"In addition to the planes included in the Starter Set and in the Squadron Packs, several other aircrafts previously released in WW2 Wings of Glory Airplane Packs were employed during the Battle of Britain and can be used in the scenarios for this period: the Heinkel He.111, the Gloster Gladiator, the Fiat Cr.42 Falco, Bristol Beaufighter Mk.IF and Bf.110.
All the other airplanes in the WW2 Wings of Glory range are compatible with the Battle of Britain Starter Set and its planes, even if they were not historically involved in this period or front of WW2."

Beaufighter, Me.110, He.111 (winter camo), Gladiator and Fiat Cr.42 are still available on Miniatures Market.
From my point of view, I would remove one Starter Set from the order and add the 5 planes above, to have a wide range of planes for every BOB scenarios.

For a first purchase, all damages tokens included in the Starter Set may be enough (2 Rules book may not be so useful)
You can have more damages tokens by purchasing a cheap second hand Wings of War WW2 "Fire from the Sky".

    Brad,
Welcome to the 'drome from Vancouver Island. Used to live in Ottawa, many years ago. It was where I got my start in gaming.

The Aerodrome Accessories site that partners the 'drome is a good place to get Wings of Glory stuff. However, Canada Border Services is hitting nearly everything with GST, and topping it with a handling charge. It is up to you if you want to take that chance. I think the smaller the box, the easier, but who knows.

Another place to try is MeepleMart in Toronto. They do mail order, and they have a few things on sale: MeepleMart - Wings Of Glory - WWII

The He.111 H-3 (Battle of Britain version) is on sale, and the Starter Set is on for $67 Cdn.

OK. When you get to the actual item listing, they are "Out of Stock"! Yup. Aerodrome Accessories looks like the way to go.

Anyway, welcome to the 'drome, and if you want to test drive the Ace Skills for WGS, check this album: WGS Ace Skill Cards

As far as advice on where to buy, don't forget the secondary markets, like Amazon or eBay which should have plenty of Canadian listers. Of course, comparison shopping to see if what you want may be listed elsewhere for cheaper (even considering stupid import/export policies) is still in order.

WoW! what a great reception thank you everyone!!!! such great suggestions and links again thank you!

I do love the idea of adding some bombers, and it appears stock is in short supply as well, Miniature Market is where I will be buying from as they have the starter sets and can deliver to a cheeky PO box that I can cross the border to pickup easily

Is fielding two he.111's a crazy idea? Do people typically get the same paint scheme? I can only get he winter camo ... do these get re-released where I could grab another paint scheme later?

And I found two bf.110's I think i'll grab two of those in matching "Schupp" paint scheme, or again is it better to get the separate scheme for the cards?

    AH to many questions.

Thank you all so much, I really want to only purchase this once as it's a mission to get these in Canada

Welcome to the Drome Brad. Listen to those with the knowledge and just have fun when playing. If you don't mind painting your own planes there is Armaments In Miniture (AIM). Many folks in here have posted photos of the planes they have painted and David has planes that are not made yet.

Welcome from Hong Kong! I have the same problem of having to buy everything online and paying through the nose for shipping, at least we don't have import duties though.

The BoB set in itself is great, the problem with the game seems to be that once a production run is done, they become rarer than chicken's teeth. (see: Spare flight pegs, the black Heinkel 111 etc.)

So I would say it's worth getting that extra BoB set for spares and someone in your gaming group will probably take it off your hands a few months down the line.

Also, have a look at some of the scenarios put up on this site, I ended up buying an extra Stuka and Hurricane because of the requirements for the Dunkirk scenario.

Re: Actual number of planes to players, realistically, most players will struggle to fly more than 2 or 3 planes without the game really bogging down.

    Cheers,

    Frankie
