Thread: Albatros Gruber & Phoenix Gruber

Default Albatros Gruber & Phoenix Gruber

We get a new A-H Albatros D.III scout with the pilot Gruber.

Is this the same Gruber we already have in the Phoenix D.I.?

Yes it's the same Gruber, dear Sven.
Unfortunately his son did not follow father's flying carreer and chose to serve in Panzerwaffe. Here is his photo taken in a small French town, near Cafe Rene.

Ok, took me 5 min to find out what kind of Gruber this "Allo, Allo" version is.

Does anyone know what ace abilities the Phoenix pilot Gruber has?
    Voilą le soleil d'Austerlitz!

    Default

    Level 1: Perfect Aim
Level 2: Perfect Aim, Acrobatic Pilot

So one of these levels will be the same on the Albatros as for the Phoenix. Why can't Ares do the same for Nungesser so I don't have to re-buy a mini I already have to get the new Ace cards?

DB, seriously considering suggesting that Ares just do a complete "Make-Up Deck" with every original Nexus plane in it...

    Thank you, DB.

Maybe we'll see a WGF ace/crew card collection in the future, like they did for BGG.

    From a historical perspective:

Stabsfeldwebel Kurt Gruber was posted to Flik 41J at Sesana airfield on the Isonzo Front in May 1917. At the time he had scored three confirmed victories. Flik 41J was initially equipped with the Hansa-Brandenburg D.I 'KD' fighter. On May 21 shortly after his arrival Gruber spun out over the airfield and crashed. He was badly wounded and was out of action until September. By that time Flik 41J had re-equipped with the Albatros D.III. On September 29 Gruber downed a Nieuport flying an Albatros, then ten days later he flamed a balloon for his fifth victory.

On December 23, 1917 Gruber was posted to Flik 60J flying the Phönix D.I. It was in this type that Gruber scored the rest of his eleven victories. On April 4, 1918 Offizierstellvertreter Kurt Gruber scored his final victory over a Sopwith Camel, but immediately after his aircraft was severely damaged. The wings of his Phönix collapsed and he fell to his death.

In game terms it was only from October 10, 1917 to December 23, 1917 whilst flying his Albatros D.III Gruber was a level 1 ace (Perfect Aim). He did not become a double ace until February 26, 1918 when he scored his tenth victory to become a level 2 ace (Acrobatic Pilot).

True, but when you consider that at times MvR, Fonck, etc. were "leveling up" at somewhere between a few days to a week elapsed time, and there were even cases of Ace-in-a-Day...

So the Level 1 card should be either the Albatros or Phoenix, the Level 2 only the Phoenix. I have a spreadsheet that I'm slowly building about the aces, their aircrat, opponents and abilities... and while Dropbox would let you guys access my work with the latest update every time you hit the link, I'd rather have something that would combine that synchronization with online editing so that if the morons claiming to "represent" me drive me to stroke out or have an aneurysm, you guys can pick up where I leave off and see it through to completion as a community resource.

Hollywood seems to have a preference for using British actors as bad guys, even when they are called upon to play another nationality entirely!

Well Steve, with the Herbert character's proclivities I would think that Tailing would feature strongly....

Acrobatic Pilot: (WGF basic rules) (RAP)
This pilot may perform a non-straight manoeuvre after an Immelmann, or, a Split-S.
When you use this skill take five recovery tokens.

    Intuitive: (WGF basic rules) (s.9)
This skill requires the use of the Tailing optional rule.
For the current turn, the ace can tail an airplane even if the ruler checking for tailing passes through a lateral side of the target base (but not the front), instead of the rear. To remember this skill has been used turn the card face down.

Strong Constitution: (WGF standard rules) (RAP)
This ace ignores the effects of the first crewman hit special damage on himself.
If the ace takes a second wound, and he is the pilot, he is incapacitated and the aircraft is eliminated.
If he is the observer, or, other crewman, he is incapacitated by the second wound and can no longer fire his machine gun.

Good at Escaping: (WGF basic rules) (RAP)
This skill requires use of the Tailing optional rule.
This pilot's airplane may not be tailed unless the tailing airplane's pilot is also an ace with the Good at Escaping skill

They just don't write them like that any more. I grew up watching D*ck Emery, Dave Allen, Sid James, John Inman, the Two Ronnies, Morcombe & Wise, Benny Hill - my Dad and I would be in stitches.

I remember thinking as a kid 'Dad is going to have a stroke' he laughed so hard.

I used to like Dave Allen's show the best, his humour was very dry. And that missing finger about he had a different story each week!

He was brilliant, I was lucky enough to see him perform live in Brighton, probably very late seventies ?
