Thread: WGS New A Manevuer Deck - Is It Just Me?

Default WGS New A Manevuer Deck - Is It Just Me?

    All,
Can anyone explain to me why the new Spitfire 60 degree turn appears to be too good to be true?

As I was doing up the MATES decks, I did up the new A Maneuver deck and saw this new turn (#12 Teal Arrows):

I thought, 'Wow, that's a fast turn! That will get you away from a Bf-109.'

But, in all the other decks I have looked at, the sharper the turn, the slower the turn. I thought, perhaps a bit more like this, if not even slower (#12 Purple Arrows):

Any thoughts? Is it just me?

Not just you. It's the result of a pile of historical research. At low speeds, an A6M2 could out turn and out-gee an early model Spit (just). The Bf109E's automatic combat flaps augmented its turn at low speed considerably. But at high speeds, nothing, but nothing, could out turn a spit. So a 60 degree turn at both high and low speeds is not just appropriate in game terms, it matches recorded performance graphs.

I had some discussion with Andrea about this. The A6M2 may be receiving a 60 degree low speed turn too on re release. Maybe even a 90. Low speed only though.

OK. However, I perceive the new turn to be faster than the top straight speed of the deck. Is that right, too?

    This is commonly the case.

Look at the WGF SPAD XIII 'A' deck - the turns and sideslips are longer (faster) than the long straights!
So too the 'B' deck for the Albatros DVa, and the 'N' deck for the SE5a.

I'm sure many other decks display the same phenomenon.

Full-length straight is shorter (slower) than either the sideslip or the turn.

    Tim,
Yeah, I noticed that, too. And I would have thought that dives would be longer than straight and level flight, as has been mentioned in other threads. This particular turn, though, seemed so much longer. As you show with the images of the WWF A Deck, though, not that different. Perhaps they grabbed the wrong version A Deck to do the update, looking at that SPAD turn arrow.

This thread triggers an idea of a complete new approach to WGF/WGS 2.0 movement rules. I have been toying with it for quite a while...to make both games much, much more faster. Placing 1-2-3 or 1-2 cards makes the gameplay slow and does not reflect the speed of an aerial combat. I would rather see just 1 maneuver card/template every time. Very sorry to say that, but X-Wing maneuver system is much more dogfight oriented and I can not tell you I dislike it, especially when trying to chase a long-base bomber with a fighter...
