Default Wings of Glory WW1 & WW2 participation games at Briscon 28-30 April 2017

The Brisbane Gaming Society has accepted my submission to run Wings of Glory WW1 and WW2 participation games at Briscon 2017 - http://www.briscon.com.au

Briscon is being held at the QLD Table Tennis Centre on Green Terrace Windsor (see map below) over the May Day weekend 2017, starting with night gaming on Friday April 28th then two full days of play on Saturday April 29th and Sunday April 30th.

On the Friday evening I will offer both WW1 and WW2 sessions, players' choice. On Saturday I plan to run WW1 missions, then on Sunday move the action to WW2. Given this event falls on the 100th anniversary of 'Bloody April 1917' the WGF games will be set in that period. For the WGS sessions I will run Battle of Britain scenarios with new Battle of Britain starter sets and squadron packs available for purchase from the Emperor's Legions stand at the event.

    Name: <acronym title=WGF & WGS.jpg Views: 494 Size: 180.7 KB" style="float: CONFIG" />

The website will be updated over the coming week with the details. I hope to see the Wings of War/Glory 'old hands' at the event to encourage new players to try (and buy) the game.

Hi Wayne, I hope so it should be good.

I want to try to get a Saturday WGS game going at Paul's shop in a couple of weeks time, I will let you know.

    Cheers,

Wings of Glory participation game blurb is up on the Briscon website - http://www.briscon.com.au/demo-and-p...ion-games.html

Still seven weeks out, I'll post more about the missions that are running closer to the event.

For those who may be interested in attending Briscon to participate in the Wings of Glory action here are some of the scenarios that will be on offer:

    WGF - Bloody April 1917

EYES OF THE ARMY - A Sopwith 1-1/2 Strutter conducts a reconnaissance over the German lines escorted by Sopwith Triplanes. The RNAS formation is set upon by the red nosed Albatros scouts of Jasta 11, led by the Rittmeister himself! (4-8 players)

BALLOON BUSTER - An RFC Nieuport 16 armed with Le Prieux rockets attacks a German observation balloon, covered by a pair of SPAD S.VIIs. On the German side of the lines only Leutnant Werner Voss and his Jasta 2 comrade Leutnant Hermann Frommherz are close enough to intervene. (5 players)

DOGFIGHT - Jasta 11 is out in force flying a barrier patrol over Arras. Spotting a flight of outdated RFC DH.2s the Germans attack, only to find RNAS Tripehounds have come to the rescue. Within moments the sky is filled with twisting and turning aircraft! (5-10 players)

WGS - The Battle of Britain 1940

THE BRIDGES AT MAASTRICHT - May 1940 - After months of Phoney War the Wehrmacht has attacked in the west, panzer columns punching through the French lines. The Bristol Blenheims and Fairey Battles of the RAF's Advanced Air Striking Force escorted by RAF and French fighters have been tasked with destroying the bridges at Maastricht to stall the German blitzkrieg. Can the brave British bomber crews fight their way through swarms of Luftwaffe Messerschmitt 109s and concentrated Flak batteries destroy their targets? Will courage alone be enough? (4+ players)

THE BEACHES OF DUNKIRK - June 1940 - Sweeping all before them the Germans have pushed the Allied armies back to the Channel ports. If Britain is to continue the fight she needs every man that can be saved from a German POW cage. While deadly Stuka dive bombers with their Messerschmitt 109 escorts attack shipping at the port of Dunkirk, the RAF dispatches Hurricanes and for the first time Spitfires to cover the evacuation. (5+ players)

CONVOY BREAD - July 1940 - The Luftwaffe targets a Channel convoy codenamed 'Bread' to draw RAF fighters to battle. Scrambled to intercept, RAF Hurricanes attack the German bombers while the Spitfires engage the Messerschmitt Bf 109E and twin engine Bf 110C escorts. (5+ players)

ADLERTAG - August 1940 - Massed Luftwaffe bomber formations escorted by hundreds of fighters cross the south coast of England intent on destroying the Royal Air Force on the ground. Can the hard pressed RAF weather the assault? Should Fighter Command pit their squadrons against the Luftwaffe one by one or hold them back to form a 'Big Wing'? Can the Germans achieve their objectives without sustaining crippling losses in men and machines? All these questions will be asked and answered in life and death battles in the skies over Kent (a big one with up to 30 aircraft, played in three stages - but only if we get enough pilots) (min 9 players)

TARGET LONDON - September 1940 - Ordered by Hitler to wipe out the British capital, unescorted Luftwaffe bombers are challenged by anti-aircraft and fighter defenses as they attack targets in the heart of London. (3-9 players).

I hope to get as many experienced players as possible to the event so we can educate the rookies and really get some large scale battles going.

    Hello Carl,

I have a permit to attend from the Wing Commander herself.

I will bring my own aircraft to the table.

It will be good to put faces to names.

All the best on the day.

    Skippy.

Good news Skip! Spread the word if you know anyone else who might want to push some planes around the table, hoping for a big weekend.

The other good news is entry to Briscon to play participation games is free.

Paul Hannouf from Emperor's Legions will have a number of Battle of Britain Starter sets and squadron packs for sale, along with a selection of older WGS series miniatures. If anyone thinking of attending is looking for a particular miniature, either WGF or WGS, post here and I will let Paul know.

    Hi Carl,

I should be able to get a long on the Saturday. Hopefully my beginners luck hasn't run out from GoPlay last year.

Thanks for putting all of this together,

    Lachlan.

    Hi Lachlan,

It will be great to catch up. We'll be playing WW1 in the morning then crossing over to WW2, so I can introduce you to the seductive Dark Side of Wings of Glory

Heading off to set up for Briscon in the next hour or so, just packing the car now.

I have prepared a few trophies for all those 'confirmed victories' this weekend. Oops, I also captured some of a 'confidential' mission briefing in the box as well!

I have some great scenarios planned, but to make the best of them we need more than a few pilots so if you are in Brisbane and looking for a game drop in this weekend - no cost for participation games.

I made up the table tents on PowerPoint then saved each page as a jpeg. I had them printed on 300gsm cardstock so they fold and stand nicely.

The organiser reckons they have 14,000+ figures

I will post the AARs for today's play in due course, for now back to a bit of last minute prep for tomorrow and some sack time.

Briscon 2017 is done and dusted! Another busy day at the gaming table but due to the required pack up time we only managed two WGS Battle of Britain missions.

Table was set up ready to go by 0900hrs for the first mission of the day.

Hi Gary, there were plenty of pilots at the con! The organisers have reported more than 1000 players and visitors through the doors on the weekend. I had more than twenty players at my table over the two days.

As you can see the Wings of Glory table had pride of place , it was one of the first tables you saw coming through the entry door.

Regarding con medals, I had four forum members attend Briscon but at this time the only medal I can recommend them for is an Australian 'minor' con medal. Given the size of the event (1000+ which is about the same as Wintercon) I would submit it probably deserves a distinct decoration of its own.

    I agree Carl!
Suggest you PM Keith with a CC to Rob & Eric requesting a special Briscon Medal.
    I will Second your request.

The Minor & Major con medals were created to do away with the individual con medals Baz due to the time and effort they required to create & update.
If I recall correctly, each country has a couple of nominated Major cons, everything else is classed as a Minor con.
Salute (in London), one if not the biggest in the UK, is a minor con.

Thanks Dave, I must have missed that standing order in the time I was away from the forum.

Thanks for the support Zoe and Barry, but I don't want to create more work for the medal designers who have already contributed so much.

    Minor con medals it is

I have recommended Slexlaw, Skippy, Rocklan and Whiskysierra for the Australian Minor Con Participant's Medal and put myself down for the GM version.

    Default Con Helpers???

One of the best things about gaming conventions is taking the opportunity to try new games.

I brought my kids along on Sunday to play some WGS - but right next door was a brand new Wild West skirmish game called 'Leadshot'.

Following that famous Barney Stinson mantra 'new is always better' they spent most of the day playing table top Cowboys and Mexicans!

Thanks Dave. This is only the second year Briscon has run and it was good to get some exposure - so many patrons came up to the table and told me they had Wings of War miniatures from the 'old days' and how much they would like to get them back on the table some time.

With the WGS Battle of Britain release, the impending WGF Series III reprint, and a local distributor in Rivalsky Games (thanks Xen) we will start the task of re-building the Wings of Glory community in Brisbane to it's former glory.

Had a look on the AAR's and have to say that I'm really impressed, Carl.
