Sunday Afternoon "Cat" Fight

OK, so far this year the kick-off for my long awaited Early War Campaign has been 1) snowed out in January and 2) postponed because I caught the FLU in February! Bummer!

The UP side to all this is my bride felt so sorry for me that she challenged me to a game a week ago. We recorded an AAR and she shared it on her Face Book page. You can view it on this link (I hope):

We tried out the new limited ammo/reloading rules as well as my variable speed and modified altitude rules ... they all seemed to work well and didn't slow the game down at all!

Anyway, it's good to be back and ... ENJOY the SHOW!

Alright gentlemen, here's the AAR of the recent dogfight my bride posted on her Facebook page. I hope I've posted it here correctly. Sorry for the delay ... there are just a LOT of images. This is the first time we've actually shared a true "blow-by-blow" report of one of our games. In the past, her WoG and SoG accounts have been quite abbreviated. Maybe we need to find a happier medium (lol)!

Flying In The Storm...2017


...what to do when a blizzard is going on outside? ...take to the skies!....we set up "Wings of Glory" and proceeded to engage in dog fights.........the rest of the pix will come later


the last time i shared this game i was flying British Sopwith Camels against Mike's Fokker Triplanes...today I'M the "hun" (lol) and will pilot a couple Fokker Eindekkers...


...with a tag-team reinforcement of a Halberstadt


he'll be flying French Moraine-Saulniers...these are all the first actual combat planes in the world...they could barely fly, much less fight


Mike always repaints his airplanes...


he likes the added detail


he even puts goggles on the little pegs that represent pilots


and focuses on creating a more weathered look


so we plan our first moves

my opening maneuvers give me the first shot, damaging his plane and wounding his pilot...good start!


after the first pass...


...we both jockey for an advantage...


...swirling about over no-man's-land


until Mike suddenly turns about and strikes once...


and with his other plane, strikes twice...ouch!


time to plan my next maneuvers


oh NO...a mid-air collision!


although my airplane is badly damaged, HIS plane CRASHES! i now have 2-1 odds in my favor...yay!!!


at least until his help arrives...a Nieuport 11...rats!!!


his Moraine-Saulnier takes a shot...nothing


still tailing me he takes another shot...again, nothing...yesss! now he has to reload


which he does as we circle about. this game really gives you the feel for how slow and how wide the turns of these old planes were


it's almost soothing...gracefully passing each other in the sky until...


...we close again...his Bebe got the better of this exchange...


...but once we passed each other i swung around and bit him in the butt (lol)...nice, but i'd hoped for more


unfortunately, having flown my badly damaged airplane off the board i find it's now MY turn to be alone!


but not for long...as my bruised Eindekker flies toward home...


...i fly my Halberstadt into the fray...


...only to find bullets whistling past my ears!!!


that's ok...this is a much sturdier airplane...and i know they've both been hurt


so a new dance begins, twirling about...


...over the trenches until...


...i find an enemy in my sights! my aim is truer...his engine is damaged and his gun jams! yesss!!!


as we pass, he fails to clear his machine gun...


...but his comrad-in-arms moves in on my tail


turning on him as he approaches, we blast each other at close range...his gun jams and my plane catches fire!!!


but his Moraine falls to pieces and his pilot is hit again and killed...2 down...and i'm barely scratched!!!


luckily i was able to extinguish my fire...now it's only the two of us


eventually i get the first shot but...nothing...and my gun jams...rats!!!


then he then turns on me and sets me on fire...AGAIN!!!


unfortunately this time i can't seem to put it out. no matter how sturdy this plane is, it's only wood and canvas...fire will kill me!


i have no choice but to attempt an overdive to try and blow it out


sadly, he anticipated this and followed me down


my dive didn't work and he fired into my tail...jamming his gun


but not before the fire and his bullets did their worst. i ended this game in a..."BLAZE of Glory"...LOLOL!!!


oh well, at least both of my Eindekkers lived to fight another day...i'll be back...i LOVE this game!!!

We used the limited ammo rules you'd posted a while back. My Moraine-Saulniers, using 30 round clips, were limited to 2 shots w/2 reload steps and my Bebe had 3 shots w/3 reload (while flying STRAIGHT!) ... they worked very well and really added a whole new dimension to the "Fokker Scourge" flavor of the game! The French are seriously challenged; but then, that's how it was a hundred years ago!!

Gentlemen, for what it's worth, we don't normally show our cards as we play. We did so for this game merely because my wife intended from the outset to make an AAR that she could post on her site and she wanted it to be as informative of the game as possible. Her FB posts have drawn interest in both WoG and SoG in the past and some of her "friends" have gone out and bought into the systems. In the past week, for example, one person informed her of his buying the SoG starter set and a half dozen or so ships! I guess it pays to advertise!!

Now if only ARES would keep the shelves stocked this hobby would seriously GROW!!!

Glad they worked out for you, adds to the tension a little bit & can be frustrating at times but, as you said, that's how it was for them.
