Ah, well, you caught me - I haven't actually seen Aces High! So maybe that's my problem. I just looked it up and remembered that it's based on the play Journey's End - which I saw performed at the US National World War I museum a few years back and was blown away by. Honestly it was one of the best theatrical performances I've ever seen. So if the film is anything like the play, but with planes, you're probably right.
Still, Aces High came out in the 70s, and there have been so many technological advances in filmmaking since then. Aces High sounds like it really nails the narrative and plot, but for me the perfect WWI film would feature several dogfights shot in modern high-def with a bunch of authentic reproductions like the Vintage Aviator birds.
