Thread: Valom SE5a's

    Default Valom SE5a's

I thought I'd give the Valom models a go given the scarcity of the WOG versions.

They turned out to be great little kits tha t went together well with a little bit of patience.

In my opinion they scale really well with the 'official' versions.

PS - does anyone know if there are pilot cards available for these two?

    Hi Dean,

Your SE.5a's look fantastic, well done.

I have not purchased any Valom kits, I have heard they can be a bit fragile for gaming pieces. But the finish is exceptional.

    Thanks Carl

They are surprisingly sturdy with all of the struts in place. If they weren't all there I imagine that there would be some movement between the upper and lower wings.

I haven't tried the drop test yet!

Looks great! As for the drop test, sort of like cell phones...best left to the producers and avoid "test" at all costs.

For what it's worth here are a couple of tips.

    1. I painted the components on the sprues before I cut them out.
    2. I then assembled them by gluing the main struts to the lower wings and the fuselage struts to the upper wings at approximately the correct angle using a fast drying super glue.
    3. When the glue was thoroughly dry I then glued the upper wing into place and was able to slightly bend the struts into place as need. When I tried to do it in one step it was way too hard to keep things straight.
    4. I replaced the upper wing Lewis gun with a rail made from a bent staple and a small piece of wire. The photo etched pieces were a bit too fine to use as gaming pieces.

    Good luck!

Well done indeed. I've never managed to properly build one.

Good advice! It is very important to let each stage cure before the next one is started. That is why when I do a build I make multiples so the bits can set and I can keep building.

    It also helps with the war effort . . . : )

You've made a great job of those, Dean!

I have built 4 Fokker DVIIs by Valom, and found that too many struts was a problem during assembly.

I glued the Interplane struts, with hard-drying Araldite glue, and let this set before applying the cabane struts later. The Aradite-cured wing struts were easily strong enough to support the upper wing on their own, so I could add the cabane struts at my leisure, without hurrying in case the glue on all the struts dried.

The 'Z' plane is that of William Avery Bishop, of 85 Squadron, which was one of the featured schemes of the Nexus SE5as of Series 4.
They had a card in the aircraft pack.
I have repainted several "Bishop" SE5as into planes flown by his wingmen, so might still have some spare "Bishop" cards - I'll have a look when I get a minute.

    Awesome SE 5a's!
I've seen the models on the ebay, but have never tried one.

Thank you all for your kind comments.

Until ARES do a reprint of the SE5a's the Valom versions help fill the gap. They are pretty simple to build if you take your time and paint up well using the Vallejo paint mix recommended here on the site.

Thanks for your offer Tim, PM sent.

    Yours look great, Dean.

Although I have 5 of the Nexus versions (including one Bishop) I would love to get more "regular" ones like yours into play.
I do hope Ares gives us RFC versions in the eagerly-awaited reprints.
I also hope they do like they did for the Battle of Britain and give us squadrons.
