Thread: London Bomb

    Default London Bomb

Watching the news and saw that there was a bomb found in the Thames River. I haven't seen anymore info but I am sure our British mates can add more.

2' x 1' UXB dredged up from the Thames by workmen near Westeminster about 5.15 last night, causing closure of a couple of underground stations and minor rush hour chaos. ATO's are dealing with it.

A lost cookie in the river?

Don't know exactly what kind of bigger bombs the Luftwaffe threw on London beside V1s and V2s.

    I think a 500kg (1100lbs) bomb was the maximum.

The Germans had a 1000+kg bomb called the SC 1000, nicknamed "Hermann" after the Luftwaffe commander. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SC1000_bomb

This photographs shows 2 SC 1000's on an airfield in Libya in 1943. and a Henkel carrying one externally.

    Sorted. From BBC News:

"A suspected unexploded World War Two bomb found in the River Thames has been recovered for safe disposal. The operation by the Royal Navy and Metropolitan Police forced Waterloo Bridge, Westminster Bridge and Victoria Embankment in central London to shut.
Westminster Police said the device was "being towed for safe disposal/removal elsewhere" as they reopened the riverfront at about 03:00 GMT. Police were called to the river at 17:15 GMT on Thursday.

The Port of London Authority said the suspected bomb measured "2ft by 1ft" (60cm x 30cm)."

Thanks for the Heads up Bob I did not see this on TV.
Mrs K says that is because our news is full of another UXB from your side of the pond.

From the size sounds like a 250lb bomb. I knew you guys would get to the story more than the news here has.

Watched it on PBS back in 1979 or 80 so I want to see it again.
I think even SWMBO might like it.

    Nice chart Dave.

When I was stationed on Okinawa they would still find stuff from WWII. One time a US 500lb in NAHA. Another time they were building a new school on Kadena and came accross a stack of Japanese bombs.
