Thread: Now this is how to do it!

Default Now this is how to do it!

Having my brother in law visiting us for a few months from the UK I thought I would teach him the basics of WoG yesterday. He flew an Re8 with a Camel as escort and I had a couple of Albatros DVa's. He blew up one of mine on the second exchange of fire and then got on my remaining planes six, set him on fire, and proceeded to down him as well.

Second game we had an HP 0400 on automatic movement rules being hammered by the two albatri so he could see how difficult it was to down one of those giants. Needless to say both gunners on the HP were wounded fairly quickly and out of the 15 or so damage cards it took to kill it, only 4 were zeros! Not too much damage to the Huns either!

Going to try similar scenarios at the Biggles Downunder hanger tonight. It will be interesting to see how the freshly minted pilot goes against quality opposition.

I did warn you about Steve using up all his beginner's luck before tonight.
But I guess you might have the last laugh if he is my opponent tonight and cleans me up.

The nights activities began with Windy Jack taking the Red Brumowski D.III and me in Hautzmeyers Brown one vs Biggles downunder in the Belgian Re8 and Stephen in the Belgian camel. There were six target cards on the table and the one to be photographed was only known to the Belgians. As we did not know where the target was we split up and flew up either side of the maps with the canny Re8 pilot coming straight down the middle towards us so we could not tell what he was targetting. Windy and Stephen exchanged fire first, and after drawing 3 damage cards the first dreaded explosion card made its appearance and the Belgian camel spiralled down in a death dive. I overshot the Re8 and turned to attack from behind. I found myself following Windy in his gaudy Red plane when he Immelmenned and we had a collision. I took a 10 damage card and he a 0. The Re8 hit me with his rear gunner and Hautzmeyer too died.

Stephen and I re-spawned, he in a DH2, and me in an Eindecker. Meanwhile the Re8 kept missing his photo shots and had to keep circling whilst exchanging fire with Windy Jack's Red plane. Finally the work was done and the Re8 headed for home. The DH2 was closing in to escort him home. However the Eindecker was now in range and managed to hit him with the explosion card. Game over. Up till then the Re8 only had 5 damage points and deserved to get home

The second game followed a similar pattern to our practice game with 3 Albatri battling my lone HP400. I had placed two machine guns in the trenches to even up the points balance and flew the big bird aggressively. We agreed before hand that if the HP got the explosion card then it would only cause 15 damage points which was just as well because a collision happened fairly quickly and the HP drew that card. The other party was similarly hit hard. The HP was continually hit by the Albatri and succumbed before even reaching the target area. The ground machine guns did not get to fire at all. The well coordinated attack took the unescorted bomber down fairly easily.

Thanks for the write up, Baxter. While without pictures it is not as interesting for those who weren't there, it was good to play games where we concentrated on playing and enjoying ourselves rather than focused on getting a good record of the games.
Thanks for the games, Biggles Down Under, Baxter, and visitor Steve.

Sounds like your brother in law is no slouch at the stick Gary.

Hm, your games seem to have a heavy favoritism towards bloody outcomes perhaps you should start stacking the decks (j/k).

I did grab one photo during our second game for the evening - very slack considering I was the photographer for the first mission!

And a very good photo it is too! That rare Albatros model catching doom from the Tommy ☺

I think the bomber went down in the same turn or the next one.
