Default OTTBE Mission 7 - Something Must Be Done - 7th February 1918

Otherwise known as the Ternhausen Turkey Shoot !

Lt Ben Downe was furious when he finally landed at their home field. Uncle spotted his stormy countenance as he was crossing from the hangar toward the Top Office. .
"Do I need to ask how it went?" asked Uncle as the door slammed back on its hinges, even though he was already in the know.
"Utter bloody shambles" barked Downe. " 'We must avoid contact early on, and maintain ambiguity about our target as long as possible.' My arse !
They were waiting for us. The air was thick with the bastards."
"That bad, eh ?" said Uncle, allowing his subordinate to let off steam.
"Bad ? If I got out of my bus I could have walked back on the tracer.."
"Well why don't you help yourself to a scotch and tell me all about it, I'll have one too." said Uncle with genuine interest.

"Well we met up with the bombers alright and followed the coast right up into the estuary - didn't see hide nor hair of Fritz in the air but they must have seen us from the beach, or, somewhere, and we passed several small ships on the way that might have radioed a message.
Anyway, we turned for the coast and as we crossed the shoreline, there they were circling like sharks waiting for a feed, the air was stiff with them."

"On we went - I traded lead with a formation of Pfalz on the left - gave as good as I got I think, took some damage to the controls is all, I think Brown had the same on the right with a formation of Tripes."

7 Huns shot down, one of which was an Eagle; 1 forced down wounded; 2 RTB light wounds; 2 forced down with engine damage; 2 severely damaged; probably 3 serviceable machines remained. If only the bombers had survived !

Well there you go - Lions led by donkeys !
Bad tactics & bad cards dealt the Tommy a bitter blow but what a cracking game. Hope your luck holds out better than mine did !
Just for the record - the bombers and escorts had their own double damage deck each, the Huns had double B & A to themselves, cards were recycled as machines went down.
I will do some rolls soon and name some names too.

    Thumbs up

Well the Bombing mission was a disaster but your lads certainly took a toll of the German Scouts with a fair bit of help from the Bombers before they got knocked out!

    Great effort Dave!

I plan to just use one HP & a DH-4 with 2 Camels Vs 6 Huns.
My daughter from Qld is arriving Tuesday so probably wont get to play this until end next week.

Nicely done Dave. The Huns saved a base but lost a bunch of planes.

Great job with the mission Dave, I wish my Eagles could give out cards like your crew!

I would rep you but I have to spread some around the forum first

Maybe we should swap decks Carl !
I was sorry to lose Niethammer right at the end, particularly as he splashed a HP, and think that Fichter was lucky to slip away before Downe or one of the others could polish him off.
I might run this again some time but I will either adjust the matrix, or, split the total enemy between the two interception zones with a carry over from the first - the attackers might scrape through then and would be easier to handle.

    Mein Gott!

That was epic without even reaching the target.
I can't imagine how long that took to play with so many aircraft at once!
I made an Excel file to easily calculate the options and keep changing the forces, but it's looking like somewhere between 16 and 20 for my attempt.

With my usual luck the Brits will make the target, as I always seem to draw better for them over my own pilots.

P.S. Sorry to see the end of Seymour Brown's escapades. But, who knows, maybe we will get a breakout mission again ....

P.P.S. Rep gun is jammed but I am sure I will be covered by others

Thanks Pete - funnily enough I hadn't thought of the total number in play, I'd just concentrated on the 16 scouts. It was 26 in all !
Played over the week, averaging a couple of hours a session depending on what I was doing that day & light conditions. I was pleased how it went; in the beginning I had my CP scouts circling in their groups and then they peeled off into the attack, that way they arrived one after the other rather than in a wave. Think there was one phase where there was no shooting, maybe, though I could be wrong.
Wish you luck with it, be ready for many hours at the table !

I was exhausted just following the action. Here, here on keeping track of everything during the weeks play! I enjoy the crisp and witty dialogue. I know that battle is serious business, but it is a game after all and I chuckle as I read along. Thanks for the AAR!

Thanks Will, thought I'd keep the dialogue simple & let the pics do most of the talking - there was so much going on all the time !
Playing it again now with some adjustments just to see if I can get the full match done. Still getting pummelled

Hi Dave, this is a great scenario but you are indeed a sucker for punishment playing the whole thing again!

I look forward to seeing the results of your revised efforts.

Holy S*** Dave How did you keep all those planes going !!!!.
Just setting up for the mission now and its taken an hour and a lot of space to put the plane charts etc.

Seriously well played. As you commented the pictures do the talking, otherwise it could have been a hell of a novel.

Brutal battle Dave. At least your boys made it back.

This is a nasty scenario indeed. I have finally completed the first part. I will have some bomber action to play out and hopefully a return trip batttle...

Well this week I finally finished the second run through - got three bombers over the targets and got two of them home through the second interception zone along with the Bristol escorts, all pretty badly shot about. I haven't gone through the photos yet or worked out the points but hit half a dozen targets to a decent degree. i will add something on here in due course about 'the second wave' !

It can be a big job this one, requiring a substantial commitment. We are 2/3 of the way through the month and only two full missions are posted, with Bob's on the way.

I expect a rush of AARs towards the end of the month.

    Default A Second Wave

Reports are in from the 'unofficial' second wave, none of our chaps involved but they did pretty well as the Hun split his force between the two interception zones, though it was not without losses.

The action was as complex and fierce as ever; here's a HP in the thick of it.

Setting up "Phase II" of the mission - been pretty deadly so far. The two remaining attackers are at about half strength before facing the AA, let alone running the gantlet through the surviving Eagles and co. to get back to base.

It will probably take a week to get the AAR up.
Then I will have to focus on the mission after next - the one I am to create - before attempting Mission 8.

Well done Dave. Despite the work involved it is great to see plenty of planes on the table at once!

Looking forward to your AAR Pete.

Both actions were very impressive Dave.
You have been suitably rewarded for your stamina.

Wooooa Dave - a turkey shoot indeed. But you got seven of the hun scouts - that was well done A shame the bombing run was a washout, so I agree - "They knew we were coming" Nice AAR - thanks for the entertainment. Mike
