Thread: What's on your Workbench - January 2017

Default What's on your Workbench - January 2017

I've got the year off to a good start by renovating my Skytrex Felixstowe, replacing the original wings with a set chopped out of a spare Shapeways model, then using the end of the Shapeways model to create a downed Felixstowe diorama (ideal for SAR scenarios), and finally I've painted up some SpAd XIVs and FBA Type H seaplanes which have been languishing in the "to do" box for over a year.

Great work David. I will have to get a Felixstowe one day, they are gorgeous!! That mini diorama is brilliant.

Wonderful work here, David! Like Jim, I really like the downed Felixstowe/debris - the floating struts are a particularly nice touch!

Thanks for the inspiration - I, too, need to get a Felixstowe sooner rather than later...

    All the best,
    Matt

It's good to se another Felixstowe - the more of them are out there, the less I feel the need to get one........................

I have two finished, the crashed one and a fourth waiting to be painted** Does that reduce your urge to do one even more?

(**although I may decide to pass on that and flog it if anyone is interested, that and a spare AEG G.IV)

    Great crash site, david
All these seaplanes keep tempting me to get my feet wet.

I just finished off my 28mm Roads and may I say, faster than the Illinois Department of Transportation could ever do. I am waiting on some Union workers to come over later after their break to install the pot-holes. They should be done by Mid-November!!! (If you live in a place with corrupt construction contracts, or ILLINOIS you will definitely get the joke!)

These started off as a blank sheet of Masonite. I drew out the roads at 4" so I could have an even 3" of road plus a half inch either side for scenery. They were cut out, sanded, side edges beveled and then the fun began. I applied a mix of sand and small gravel and white glue first. Once dry I painted it with a blend of 3 colors, all while wet so they flowed together nicely. once dry they got a light dry-brush of the light tan for highlighting. I made a template out of some scrap wood at 3" so I could get a proper fit between the pieces once the grass was added. The checkpoint gate and hut are from 4 Ground, the barbed wire rack is made from sticks from my Yard. Let the shooting begin!

Well has these for some time but getting the Swordfish done and seeing what others did I finished my AIM Kate's. Nothing fancy but now I have some Kate's to go with the VAL's from series II and ZERO's from series I.

I still have 2 AIM Betty's and 3 Shapeways Nell's to paint. Will work on the Bettys. Aslo have 2 SM 79's to finish up so could be a busy week. You and others gave me the inspiration to work on them.

Your silver canopies turned out much more interesting than those flat blue of mine, Bob. Quite inspirational!

What scale are your ships, Bob? - they look perfect! Great stuff!

And, Jim, your roads look splendid - can't wait to see an AAR with infantry and tanks 'inhabiting' them...

Andy mine are nothing close to you paint jobs so you saying that is great praise. The only thing I see in the photos are that the torpedoes need to be painted more on the top. I do see some light color on the top.

Matt they are the Axis & Allies War at Sea ships. Others have used them in their photos which gave me the idea to use them as a target.

Well here are todays finished planes. 2 AIM SM-79's. Not sure what Stormo (?) or Gruppo (Group) they would belong to but made them #10 Squadriglia (Squardon) plane # 5 and 6. From the Squadron/signal in action book I have is see that the squadron and plane number were on the plane so I have to see what unit 10th squadron belonged to.

I saw a "10 Squadron", but it was a fighter unit (CR.42s out of Tobruk). There's a "10th Bomber Wing" using Hunchbacks operating out of Benghazi (13th "Pegaso" Bomber Div.; consisting of 30th and 32nd Squadrons).

DEAR GOD, NOT MORE TRAINS! Yep, the bug bit again. I am building a small Narrow Gauge Layout. I got my jib Hoist Crane built and painted and am messing around weathering some rolling stock now. The size is HO (187 scale) but the track is narrow gauge(about 36 scale inches wide). I could not stand the smooth plastic box car roofs so I did the 'ol masking tape tar paper trick and then painted them.

I got a Betty recently and was eying up a Kate paint job I saw while looking for photos to make a card for "proxy" use. I have the Merit Devestators and 2 Avengers, so it's only fair the IJN gets Kates. Your planes look very nice Bob!

    --
As for my own workbench, I was thinking that since I don't currently paint or the like I don't have anything on my workbench. But I guess I do have a couple of projects that involve scissors and glue.

    1) Finish the storage containers for my planes. Pretty easy for most of them, just have to figure out where to put the Emily!
    2) Make a few more pegs to mount these new unoffical planes. I either glue 2 pegs female to female, or put a toothpick piece in one.
    3) Glue on the mounting circles to my bases that my father in law cut for me. 2 bombers, 6 HF, and about 15 regular.
    4) Finish my proxy cards for Kates, Lilys, Annes (although they are the same as Val's essentially), and something else... but I forget what I printed a picture of..perhaps a Beaufort?
    5) Cut out any extra decks I printed & put the stickers on the back.
    6) I printed some ships on cardstock in a reasonable scale (1/1200 IIRC) for the PTO. I need to cut them out and "finish them". That involves mounting them on a blue piece of cardstock for more durability, and then figure out some basic stats ie - how many AA guns each.

Zoe, have you -- like Clipper -- drafted a platoon of elves to do your painting at night, as long as you keep supplying them cookies? That's amazing productivity!

  36. #36

Drafted a platoon of elves? No. Ok, so I got a copy of Clipper's Elf Induction Manual, but you see, Clipper often scratchbuilds his works. I buy the 3D printed blanks made by incredibly talented designers like yourself.

That Soviet Sopwith Triplane (no less than 16 red stars on in various locations) has been sitting in its shapeways plastic bag in my "to do" box ever since the days when Kampfflieger was the only Shapeways designer, and it's one of his first designs.

Someone sent me one of these for Christmas, that's all. I finally have one.

N gauge model railway figurines (unpainted) are quite cheap, and with a bit of green stuff, or just an appropriate paint job, make excellent standing gunners, engineers etc. Snip them so only the top third remains, you get good pilots too.

Greetings all and a belated Happy New Year,
I've been playing around with some Shapeways UFD 6mm (1/285 - 1/300 scale) ground vehicles as potential ground targets. I've mounted them on cards the same size as the WoG cards. Enhanced the groundwork with 'Sculpey', clay shell holes, trench lines, etc.Click image for larger version.

Thanks for the feedback, Guys! I've been modeling for close to fifty years now. Used to build mostly 1/48 scale with a few 72's and 1/28's thrown in. Although my aging eyes make it a challenge, (thank God for Optivisors!) the tiny stuff is a lot of fun. Seems that now my favorite scales range from one extreme (1/144) to the other (1/32 Wingnut Wings)!
