This AAR is a solo game based on CarlBrisgamer's multiplayer WGF WF02 - Raid on Cambrai scenario -
I don't have the time to do it full justice so it will be edited highlights only:
The Tommy's attack - a mix of 2x DH4 with 2x Bristol Fighter as escorts - I flew J for Johnny (top left) if you see it in the mix, everything else is flown by the AI but I did have to help the DH4's with their bomb runs in the end.
The opposition in their Fokker D.VII's - left to right: Ltn's Kiesel (Yellow); Stransky (Red/white/black); Triebig (Lilac) & Vzfwbl Steiner (Red/White). No prizes for guessing the source of these names...
The target bridge
On the first pass Stransky exchanges 0's with Bristol H - Harry, Triebig gets 3 from DH4 #5 in exchange for a 1LRD whereas I get battered by Steiner, jamming my front gun in the process !
And Kiesel clobbers the plain DH4, dropping the gunner....I played an optional wounded observer rule we use in OTT so he's just out of the game for the rest of this & the next whole turn.
DH4 #5 slips though and drops half his payload - his aim was well off, now at alt 5 the bombs take two turns to strike and they ended up well beyond the target. Bugger !
Here's a round up of some of the damage handed out in the following melee:
H-Harry gunner catches Steiner with a 2,0 as he passes behind them, then smacks Stransky with a 4 from the front end moments later.
Steiner turns on H-Harry and pops a 2LRD into his tail and I catch Kiesel as he passes me - my gunner puts a 2RRD into his tail.
There's a lot of close passes and blind spots come into play as the melee continues.
I get 1,1GJ into Kiesel as he hangs on his prop but he misses me and my gunner slams a 3 into Triebig as he crosses my tail at long range.
Triebig then exchanges 0's with H-Harry.
Stransky breaks though & gets onto #5 but scores 0 as the gunner replies with a 1smk.
Steiner gets a beam shot onto H-Harry but only gets a 0 on him.
Kiesel gets back onto the plain DH4 once more and rakes him with a long shot, the just recovered gunner responds.
As Stransky swaps 0's with #5, Kiesel presses home his attack but gets a nasty surprise as the gunner seems fully recovered and gets to grips with the job in hand
Things begin to happen quickly after this:
H-Harry spoils Triebig's day with a shot that will send him home (Engine hits cause RTB in OTT - helps thin the herd)
Kiesel has another go at the plain DH4 but comes off second best again as the gunner sets him on fire
Excuse the lighting change - followed on the next morning as the uplighter I use self destructed
Stransky continues his assault on #5 but he too comes a cropper - the wound sufficient to see him off the field (another herd thinning OTT rule)
And to add insult to injury Triebig also takes a wound when H-Harry turns on him.
As Kiesel slips into the DH4's blind spot the pilot toggles the bomb release - dumping the whole load as his machine is now so badly damaged he must make for home - it'll be close but not a direct hit. As Kiesel clears the blind spot the gunner gives him another burst and scores a 1, he has to bug out now;
#5's gunner strafes the wounded Stransky scoring a 2 +1 before his pilot releases his final half load - the line looks good - even as he see's the plain DH4's full load score a near miss..
Kiesels D.VII succumbs to the fire (first draw)
Steiner sees his colleague go in and swoops on the plain DH4 with revenge on his mind and hate in his heart ....
Success !
Steiner whips round on #5 but finds himself caught between fires
The damage is sufficient to force him to retire and the surviving attackers run for home....
Did #5 hit the bridge... I should say so !
#5 RTB / 0 kills / bridge destroyed / 1 Probable ?
Plain DH4: SD-ET / 1 kill (gunner) / near miss
Bristol H-Harry: RTB / 0 kills - 1 probable ?
Bristol J-Johnny: RTB / 0 kills
Steiner: RTB / 1 kill - forced to retire
Stransky: RTB / WIA / 0 Kills - forced to retire
Triebig: RTB / WIA / 0 Kills - forced to retire
Kiesel: SD-FLM-FT / 0 kills
Played my usual alt & manoeuvre rules, sprinkled with OTT rules and options, shooting peg to peg - hope they did it justice.
A thoroughly entertaining bash, to be recommended as a multi-player for club, or, solo game for home use - well done again Carl.
