    Default Air Accident

Pretty sad what happened today. I know it's not related to WoG, but anyway. Biggest accident with a sports delegation ever. Hard to express what everyone felt this morning. An airplane is the safest way to get from A to B, but when something goes wrong, it's really hard not to be totally fatal. 75 out of 81 passengers of this Avro flight died, most of them of the Associação Chapecoense de Futebol, a small football team of the southern area of Brazil that in a few years came out of nowhere to became one of the elite national teams. This sport is really important to our nation, and it's going to be hard to overcome what happened. Just wanted to leave, here, my thoughts and prayers. May all of them rest in peace.

The SO is following this on the professional pilots' web-fora; from the sound of it, someone *really* screwed up in trying to make a destination without adequate fuel reserves (coupled to another, completely different, acft. also having an emergency at the same field at the same time).

Having seen similar air accidents here in the States my heart goes out to those who lost a loved one and those who survived.

Everything is still confusing, but from what I heard, yes, that Avro had something like 2900km of autonomy and the destination was 3000km away. Apparently there were a lot of survivors at first, but harsh terrain, night time, and rain made it hard for the rescuers.

A tragic event in all respects Nicolas, echoes of the tragedy that befell Manchester United team in 1958. Our thoughts are with all involved.

I would like to add my condolences to all those others of you who have expressed you sorrow at this tragic event.
I am old enough to remember 1958 and the terrible feeling of sadness that it left in England at the time.

Such terrible accidents happen and this was one of the most tragic. I truly regret all those young lives, knowing how important football is for the Brasilian nation.
My thoughts are with you Nicolas.

I did see this on the news and prayers go out to the families. Sad about the crash but the loss of a whole team hurts the community.

I wasn't directly affected by the accident, in the sense that I wasn't a fan of the team, they being from another state. But it's such a shock, so many people dying. From night to day a fellow team disappears. I thank you all for the kind words.
