Currently I am reading a book on the Russian Army in the First World War and a sentence in the appendices set me thinking.

One early Ilya Muromets was equipped with a 37mm cannon to attack Zeppelins, no indication it was ever used for that but what an interesting 'duel' scenario for someone with a very big table

Sounds interesting. I read somewhere that there was an Ilya Muromets had a rear tail gunner. I want to look into that.

Another snippet from the book indicated 3-4 machine guns of a variety of types and nationalities, all interchangeable in positions and mostly of dubious reliability. It suggests the gunner could choose whatever they were most comfortable with on the day.
